The short answer: see Space Center Houston, spend an afternoon in the Museum District, walk or bike Buffalo Bayou, eat barbecue or Tex-Mex, and catch a game or a show. Then pick a direction (the Gulf, the Heights, Chinatown) and keep going.

Houston is big and spread out, so the best plan groups things by neighborhood and saves the long drives for a day of their own. Summer afternoons are hot, which is why locals do outdoor plans early or after dark and save museums for midday. This page sorts the city by what you're in the mood for, with links to our detailed guides. For a ready-made plan, start with our 3-day itinerary or 2 days in Houston.

Top attractions

If you only do one thing, make it Space Center Houston, the official visitor center of NASA's Johnson Space Center. A general admission ticket includes the tram tour onto the working NASA campus. Give it most of a day, and add the Clear Lake area for dinner on the water.

Closer to downtown, the Houston Zoo sits inside Hermann Park, and the Downtown Aquarium pairs tanks and a restaurant with rides that work well for younger kids. Our full Houston attractions guide ranks the rest.

Museums

The Museum District, just south of Midtown, is the center of Houston's culture. Its museum association counts about 20 member institutions within a short drive or walk of each other, from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston to the Children's Museum and the Holocaust Museum.

A few habits save money. The Menil Collection is always free. The MFAH opens its permanent collections free on Thursdays. The Houston Museum of Natural Science has free evening hours once a week. Check each museum's site before you go, because free-hour schedules change. Start with our Houston museums guide, then go deeper with the Museum of Natural Science guide and the Museum District area page.

Parks & outdoors

Houston's parks are bigger than visitors expect. Memorial Park covers about 1,500 acres of trails, a golf course and the Eastern Glades. Buffalo Bayou Park runs west from downtown with hike-and-bike trails, kayak launches and the Cistern. Hermann Park has pedal boats, the Japanese Garden and McGovern Centennial Gardens. For something quieter, the Houston Botanic Garden is east of downtown.

Go early in summer. The trails at Memorial and Buffalo Bayou are busiest at sunrise for a reason.

Family & kids

Houston is a strong family city, partly because so much of it is indoors and air-conditioned. Our family activities guide sorts ideas by age, season and budget. In the hottest months, the water parks guide compares every option side by side. For kids on a budget, the free kids activities guide covers splash pads, library programs and free museum hours.

Free things to do

A lot of Houston costs nothing. Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park runs a season of free performances every year, from symphony nights to classic films. You can bring a blanket to the hill or reserve a free seat under the canopy for evening shows. Add the free museums above, the bayou trails and downtown's parks, and you can fill a weekend without a ticket.

Our free things to do in Houston guide has the full list. If you're downtown, the Market Square Park guide covers one of the best free hangouts in the historic district.

Date ideas

Our favorite easy date: an evening on Buffalo Bayou, then dinner in Montrose or the Heights. For more, read romantic things to do in Houston, book from our date night restaurants list, and finish at one of the best cocktail bars.

Nightlife & live music

Houston's nightlife is spread across neighborhoods, not packed into one strip. Washington Avenue, Midtown, EaDo and the Heights each feel different. Start with our nightlife hub and the nightlife guide by neighborhood. For shows, our concerts hub covers every major venue, and the comedy clubs guide covers stand-up. The Theater District guide covers opera, ballet, symphony and Broadway tours downtown.

Sports

Houston fields teams in every major league, and most of the venues sit close to downtown. The Astros play at Daikin Park (formerly Minute Maid Park), the Rockets at Toyota Center, and the Dynamo and Dash at Shell Energy Stadium in EaDo. The Texans play at Reliant Stadium, the former NRG Stadium, which took back its original name in 2026. See our sports hub, the Daikin Park visitor guide, and the Texans and Rockets pages.

Day trips

The coast is close. The Kemah Boardwalk has rides, seafood and bay views, and Galveston's beaches and historic Strand are a little farther down I-45. Our beaches near Houston guide covers the shoreline, and day trips from Houston heads inland to the Hill Country, Brenham and beyond. More ideas live on our day trips hub.

Things to do by neighborhood

Houston works best one area at a time. Our neighborhood guides cover what to see, where to eat and where to park:

  • Downtown: parks, theaters, ballgames and the tunnel system
  • The Heights: bungalow streets, 19th Street shops and patios
  • Montrose: galleries, the Menil campus and independent restaurants
  • EaDo: breweries, murals and soccer nights
  • Galleria/Uptown: shopping and the Waterwall
  • The Woodlands: the Waterway, trails and the Pavilion
  • Clear Lake: NASA, boating and the bay

Every other area is on our neighborhoods page.

Plan around the weather

Spring and fall are the easy seasons. Summer is long and humid, and hurricane season runs through it. Our best time to visit Houston guide goes month by month, and the events hub shows what's on while you're here. To skip the driving, our METRO guide covers which attractions you can reach by rail.
