Discovery Green is a free 12-acre urban park in downtown Houston, operated by the Discovery Green Conservancy at 1500 McKinney Street at Avenida de las Americas. No admission fee, no reservations required. The park runs more than 600 events per year—most of them free—including yoga at sunrise, Saturday night concerts, outdoor movies, and the city's most unusual outdoor skating experience in winter.
What is Discovery Green?
Discovery Green opened in April 2008 on what had been two surface parking lots and a bus depot separating downtown Houston from the convention district. The Discovery Green Conservancy, a private nonprofit, built and operates it—which is why it has more programming than a typical city park. Houston Parks and Recreation didn't build this one; private donations did. The result is 12 acres that punch well above their size: a lake, a playground, an event lawn, a dog run, two on-site restaurants, and a year-round calendar most paid venues would envy.
The insider fact worth sharing: when Discovery Green opened, it was the first major new park built in downtown Houston in more than 50 years. The city had let surface parking consume what could have been public space for decades.
What to see and do at Discovery Green
Kinder Lake
The one-acre lake at the park's heart is named for philanthropist Rich Kinder, whose family donated toward the park. You can rent pedal boats and kayaks on a seasonal schedule—check discoverygreen.com for current rental availability and pricing. The lake also functions as a stormwater retention basin, so what looks like a park amenity is quietly doing infrastructure work too.
Lamar Fountain and splash pad
The interactive water fountain near the Lamar Street entrance shoots jets of water in variable patterns. Families treat it as a free splash pad from spring through fall. Hours and the seasonal schedule are posted on the Conservancy's events calendar.
The Shire children's playground
A large, accessible playground on the park's southwest corner. It's well shaded, which matters in Houston from May through September. Free to use during park hours.
Free yoga and fitness classes
The Conservancy runs free morning yoga classes multiple days per week—typically Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The schedule changes seasonally. Check discoverygreen.com/events before you go, and bring your own mat. Other free fitness programming rotates throughout the year.
Free Saturday Concerts
The park hosts a weekly Saturday concert series through much of the year, typically starting in late afternoon on the event lawn near McKinney Street. Genre rotates week to week: blues, Latin, country, jazz, and more. All free, no ticket required.
Free outdoor movies
Film screenings happen regularly, especially in spring and fall when outdoor temperatures cooperate. The Conservancy posts the full schedule at discoverygreen.com several weeks in advance.
The ICE at Discovery Green
This is the park's signature winter feature and one of the more unusual skating experiences in Texas. From roughly mid-November through late January, an outdoor ice ribbon—a winding, curved path rather than a traditional rectangle—snakes through the park's landscape. You're not going in circles; you're following a route past trees and around the park's contours.
The ribbon format is the key difference from a standard rink. Check discoverygreen.com for opening dates, session times, and current pricing. Skate rentals are available on-site. Weekend afternoons draw the longest lines—go on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening for a shorter wait and a different atmosphere.
Off-leash dog run
A fenced off-leash dog area sits at the park's east end, open daily. Bring water; shade is limited. Dogs must be current on vaccinations per the Conservancy's rules.
How we chose
Every feature above was confirmed via the official Discovery Green Conservancy website and its event calendar. Seasonal features are clearly labeled. Hours and seasonal availability change—check the official site before you go.
When is the best time to visit Discovery Green?
Fall (October–November) is the ideal window. Temperatures ease into the 60s, the Saturday Concerts and outdoor movies are in full swing, and the ICE typically opens in mid-November.
Winter (mid-November–January) brings the ice ribbon. Weeknights are far less crowded than weekends. Bring layers: Houston evenings get genuinely cold near open water, even if the daytime forecast looks mild.
Spring (March–May) is the second-best season. Yoga classes are busy, the splash pad reopens, and the planted areas are at their greenest.
Summer (June–September) is hot, but the fountain and splash pad make it workable for families. Morning yoga before 9 a.m. is comfortable. The Conservancy shifts most outdoor programming to evenings in summer.
