Free Museums in Houston: Always-Free Picks and Free Museum Days

Date Published

Illustrated museum facade at night for a guide to free museums in Houston

In Houston, you can spend a whole week looking at serious art and history without buying a single ticket. A Surrealist collection, a chapel built around Mark Rothko paintings, a James Turrell light show at sunset and a museum of contemporary craft are all free every day they're open. The big-ticket museums open their doors for free on a regular weekly schedule, too.

This is the cheat sheet: which museums are always free, which ones have free hours, and how to string them together into a day that costs you nothing but parking. For the full picture of the city's museums, including the paid highlights, see our Houston museums guide.

The quick version

  • Always free: the Menil Collection, Rothko Chapel, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Houston Center for Photography, Lawndale, the Moody Center for the Arts at Rice, Blaffer Art Museum at UH, the Houston Museum of African American Culture and Art League Houston.
  • Free on Tuesday evening: Houston Museum of Natural Science.
  • Free on Thursday: the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Asia Society Texas, Holocaust Museum Houston, The Health Museum and Children's Museum Houston.
  • Closed on Monday: almost everyone. More on that below.

The one-line version worth screenshotting: in Houston, Thursday is the cheapest day of the week to be cultured.

How we chose

Every museum here had to be free to enter, either every day or during a regular weekly window, and we checked each one against its own official website or the Houston Museum District's official listing. We left out places that were temporarily closed when we checked, including the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum and the Orange Show monument.

Free programs are usually sponsored, and sponsors change. Hours below are what each museum typically keeps, so check the official site before you go, especially around holidays.

Always free: the Montrose side

1. The Menil Collection

Montrose · 1533 Sul Ross Street · typically Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The Menil is the reason many Houstonians fall for museums in the first place. Founders John and Dominique de Menil believed art is essential to the human experience, and the museum is still always free. The campus spreads across a quiet residential neighborhood: the main building, the Menil Drawing Institute and the Cy Twombly Gallery, with lawns in between.

Insider tip: pencils, sketchbooks and notebooks are welcome in the galleries, so bring one and draw. Ink, easels and paint aren't allowed, and photography isn't permitted inside the galleries. The Menil is closed Monday and Tuesday.

Why it's here: a remarkable collection, naturally lit galleries and no ticket line. It's the best free afternoon in the city, in our opinion.

2. Rothko Chapel

Montrose · 3900 Yupon Street at Sul Ross · typically Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A short walk from the Menil, the Rothko Chapel is a meditative space built around Mark Rothko's paintings. Admission is free and tickets are no longer required. Outside, the Broken Obelisk sculpture stands on the grounds, which are open from dawn until dusk.

Insider tip: on Thursdays the chapel itself closes from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and it closes for public programs or private events about twice a month. The chapel posts its hours a week ahead, so check before you plan around it. Street parking on Yupon, Branard and Sul Ross is free.

Why it's here: twenty quiet minutes here resets a whole day.

3. Houston Center for Photography

Montrose · 1441 West Alabama Street · typically Wednesday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A few blocks from the Menil, this is where to see contemporary photography. It's always free and has a free parking lot out front.

Why it's here: it stays open until 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, so it's an easy after-work stop.

4. Art League Houston

Montrose · 1953 Montrose Boulevard · gallery typically open daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Art League Houston's gallery space is free all year, and it shows contemporary work by Texas artists.

Why it's here: it's the rare gallery on this list that lists Monday hours, which makes it your answer to the Monday problem.

Always free: the Museum District

5. Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)

Museum District · 5216 Montrose Boulevard · typically Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., until 9 p.m. on Thursday

CAMH doesn't keep a permanent collection. Everything is a rotating exhibition, often early-career solo shows and big group exhibitions, so there's always something you haven't seen. Admission is always free, and street parking nearby is free.

Why it's here: the fastest way to see what artists are making right now.

6. Houston Center for Contemporary Craft

Museum District · 4848 Main Street · typically Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Craft and design in clay, wood, metal and fiber. Admission is free and so is the lot behind the building, off Rosedale and Travis streets. Use the back entrance next to the parking lot and the Craft Garden; the front door on Main is closed to street access.

Why it's here: it's open on Tuesday, when most of the art museums aren't.

7. Lawndale

Museum District · 4912 Main Street · typically Wednesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lawndale shows work by Houston-area artists, and admission is always free. Its free lot is directly behind the building at the corner of Travis and Rosedale, practically shared turf with the Craft center, so you can see both without moving your car.

Insider tip: Lawndale's galleries close between exhibitions for installation, so check its site before you make a special trip.

8. Houston Museum of African American Culture (HMAAC)

Museum District · 4807 Caroline Street · typically Wednesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., until 8 p.m. on Thursday

General admission at HMAAC is always free, with donations accepted. Its exhibitions explore African American art, history and culture, and it's a short walk from the Holocaust Museum and Asia Society.

Always free: on campus

9. Moody Center for the Arts and the Twilight Epiphany Skyspace

[Rice University](/rice-university) · Moody at 6100 Main Street · exhibitions typically Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Moody's exhibition spaces are free and open to the public, and most of its events are free too. The real share-worthy moment is a short walk away: James Turrell's Twilight Epiphany Skyspace, a free, open-air pavilion where a light sequence of about 40 minutes plays across the ceiling at sunrise and sunset.

Insider tip: the sunset sequence starts about 8 to 10 minutes before sunset, and the sunrise sequence starts about 40 minutes before sunrise. Rice asks you to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, put phones and cameras away during the show, and skip food and drink. Campus parking is paid; West Lot 2, next to the Shepherd School of Music, is the closest.

Why it's here: it runs rain or shine, it's free every day, and it's one of the most unexpectedly moving things to do in Houston.

10. Blaffer Art Museum

University of Houston · 4173 Elgin Street · typically Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.

The University of Houston's contemporary art museum is always free. Parking is the catch: Blaffer lists six free spots in Lot 16B, and when those are gone you'll pay hourly at the Elgin Street Garage. Combine it with a stop in Third Ward.

Free days at the paid museums

11. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH)

Museum District · 1001 Bissonnet Street · free on Thursdays

On Thursdays, admission to MFAH's permanent collections is free, courtesy of Shell USA, Inc. That's a collection the Houston Museum District describes as nearly 80,000 works spanning more than 5,000 years. MFAH is typically open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays.

Insider tip: special exhibitions still need a ticket, but on Thursdays the All Access ticket for ages 13 and up drops to a lower Thursday price. If there's a show you want to see, Thursday is the day. MFAH is closed Monday and Tuesday.

12. Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS)

Hermann Park · 5555 Hermann Park Drive · free Tuesdays, 5 to 8 p.m.

General admission to the permanent exhibits is free on Tuesday evenings, first come, first served, with last entry at 7:30 p.m. The planetarium, butterfly center and giant screen theater are separate tickets. HMNS occasionally skips a Free Tuesday, so check its hours page before you go. Our HMNS visitor guide covers what to see.

13. Asia Society Texas

Museum District · 1370 Southmore Boulevard · free Thursdays, noon to 7 p.m.

Admission is free on Thursday afternoons and evenings. Parking is in Asia Society's paid lot across Southmore.

14. Holocaust Museum Houston

Museum District · 5401 Caroline Street · free Thursdays, 2 to 5 p.m.

The museum is free to everyone on Thursday afternoons. It's also always free for visitors 18 and under and for college students with a valid ID, which makes it one of the best deals in the city for families with teens. It's closed on Mondays.

15. The Health Museum

Museum District · 1515 Hermann Drive · Free Family Thursday, 2 to 5 p.m.

Free Family Thursday has its own ticket on the museum's site, so grab one before you go. The visitor lot is paid.

Insider tip: on any other day, show your METRO card for 50% off admission. The closest METRORail stop is Museum District station on the Red Line.

16. Children's Museum Houston

Museum District · 1500 Binz Street · Free Family Night, Thursdays 5 to 8 p.m.

Free admission for everyone on Thursday night, with one rule: your group has to include a child age 12 or under. Free Family Night is popular, and the museum encourages booking tickets in advance. More free ideas for kids are in our free kids activities guide.

Save this: the free Thursday route

Thursday is when the most doors open at once. This route stays in the Museum District.

  1. Noon: start at Asia Society Texas as the free window opens.
  2. 1 p.m.: walk to HMAAC on Caroline Street.
  3. 2 p.m.: Holocaust Museum Houston, free from 2 to 5.
  4. 3:30 p.m.: lunch break; see our Museum District restaurant guide.
  5. 4:30 p.m.: MFAH's permanent collections, free all day and open late.
  6. 7 p.m.: cross the street to CAMH, open until 9 on Thursdays.
  7. With kids instead: swap MFAH for The Health Museum (2 to 5) and the Children's Museum's Free Family Night (5 to 8).

The Monday and Tuesday problem

Most of the museums on this list close on Monday, and many close on Tuesday too. Here's how to work around it.

  • Monday: Art League Houston's gallery lists Monday hours. Otherwise, it's a park day; try Hermann Park.
  • Tuesday: the Rothko Chapel, the Craft center, the Moody and Blaffer are typically open, then finish at HMNS for Free Tuesday from 5 to 8.
  • Any evening: the Skyspace at sunset, every day of the week.

Tips for a free museum day

  • Free admission isn't always free parking. The Menil, CAMH's street parking, HCP, the Craft center and Lawndale are the easy free-parking stops. The Health Museum, Asia Society and MFAH charge.
  • Take the train. The METRORail Red Line runs through the Museum District, and Museum District station is the nearest stop for many of these.
  • Check before you go. Free programs change.
