Evelyn's Park is a free five-acre public park at 4400 Bellaire Boulevard in Bellaire, Texas — a self-governing city encircled by Houston. Open daily from 7 AM, no admission fee. Inside you'll find a bayou-themed playground, a splash pad, the Trevilion pavilion, an Alice in Wonderland sculpture with 150 hidden allusions, Betsy's all-day restaurant, and a reliable calendar of free weekly events. For a neighborhood park in a city of 18,000, it runs a program that rivals much larger green spaces.
A century of nursery, now a park
The land has been shaping Houston longer than the park has been open. In 1910, horticulturalist Edward Teas established his nursery on this exact lot at Bellaire Boulevard and Avenue A. Over the following decades his family supplied trees for parks, campuses, and neighborhoods across the Houston area. The Teas Nursery ran for nearly a century before closing in December 2009.
Brothers Jerry and Maury Rubenstein then donated the remaining land to the City of Bellaire in honor of their mother, Evelyn Rubenstein. Bellaire voters approved a construction bond for the project. The park was designed by Principle in conjunction with Studio Kudos and opened on Earth Day — April 22, 2017. Phase 2 later added the playgrounds, splash pad and Solar Pavilion.
One detail that surprises most visitors: the yellow Betsy's building at the park's southwest corner was designed to echo the wood-frame bungalow the Teas family built on this property around 1910. A researcher discovered that the original house had been ordered from a Sears catalog. The original was demolished during park construction; the new building echoes its massing and warm color.
The bayou playground
The playground draws directly from Buffalo Bayou and Houston's lowland ecology:
- Barn Swallow — a climbing structure named for the birds that nest along the city's bayous
- Log Jam — a 14,000-pound hand-chiseled concrete tunnel and slide designed to look like a logjam in a bayou creek
- The Nest — a sand pit with a water splash table, especially good for toddlers who want to dig and pour
The structures are shaded and use natural materials throughout. They're sized well for younger children; older kids tend to migrate quickly to the splash pad next door.
Splash 'N' Play splash pad
Directly beside the playground, in-ground jets shoot columns of water several feet into the air — no standing water, which makes it toddler-friendly and easy to keep clean. The pad is typically open daily from 8 AM to 10 PM during operating season; check the official site before you visit for the current seasonal schedule.
What the park doesn't advertise at street level: an underground cistern beneath the splash pad collects and recirculates the water for park irrigation — a genuinely efficient design for a city that works hard to stay green through a long, hot summer.
The Trevilion pavilion
At the east end of the Great Lawn stands the Trevilion, the park's main covered structure. It's a hybrid of trellis and pavilion — painted metal framing, warm wood accents, and stainless steel cables — with bench seats that attach to the cables and allow a slight sway. Movable chairs and tables spread across the floor. It serves as gateway, performance stage, outdoor classroom and shade structure, and it hosts most of the park's free weekly programming.
The Alice in Wonderland sculpture
"Move One Place On" is the park's signature work. Installed in April 2018, the large bronze sculpture by Houston artist Bridgette Mongeon depicts Alice's tea party: the Mad Hatter tilted back in his chair (adorned with a lion, a unicorn, and flamingos), the Dormouse asleep, the March Hare leaning in, the Cheshire Cat perched above, and a built-in chessboard set into the floor.
Every character faces one empty seat. You're invited to sit and "Move One Place On" — take a turn at the table. The sculpture contains 150 hidden Wonderland allusions, placed to mark the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll's book. The sculptor's website has information on finding all 150 allusions; look it up before you arrive and the sculpture becomes a 20-minute scavenger hunt.
Betsy's restaurant
The small yellow building at the park's southwest corner is Betsy's at Evelyn's Park, an all-day café from Adair Concepts (Nick Adair and Katie Adair Barnhart). The name honors their mother, Betsy Adair — one of several family tributes woven into the park.
Typical hours: Mon–Thu 8 AM–8 PM · Fri 8 AM–9 PM · Sat 9 AM–9 PM · Sun 9 AM–8 PM Happy hour: Mon–Fri 3–6 PM Phone: 713.660.6692
The menu runs all day: breakfast tacos, smoothies, and locally-roasted coffee in the morning; sandwiches, burgers, salads, pizza and cheese boards at lunch and dinner, with a full wine and beer program. It's the kind of place where you order at the counter, find a table under the oaks, and stay longer than you planned. Betsy's also hosts grill nights and pop-up events on the Great Lawn — check the restaurant's social pages or the park events calendar for current specials.
Free concerts: Thursday evenings and Friday nights
Betsy's hosts free live music twice a week, making Evelyn's Park one of the only parks in Greater Houston with a reliable weekly concert program:
- Thursday Evening Concerts — 6:30–8:00 PM, local artists across acoustic, jazz, folk and R&B styles
- Friday Night Live — 6:30–9:30 PM, full bands, louder and livelier
No tickets, no reservations. The Great Lawn fills quickly on popular nights, so arrive before 6 PM to claim a spot. Bring a blanket or a low folding chair — fixed seating at the Trevilion and around Betsy's fills first. The monthly lineup is at evelynspark.org/events.
More free weekly programming
Beyond concerts, the park runs year-round free classes and activities:
- Yoga in the Park — Mondays 9–10 AM, Great Lawn
- Tai Chi in the Park — Tuesdays 9–9:30 AM, Solar Pavilion
- Art in the Park — Tuesdays and Thursdays 11 AM–noon, Trevilion
- Circle Time (children's storytime and songs) — Fridays 11 AM–noon, Trevilion
- Danz Jamz (family fitness) — Saturdays 8–8:45 AM, Trevilion
Schedules shift by season. The park also runs special events — origami workshops, holiday markets, seasonal galas — throughout the year. Check evelynspark.org/events the week before you visit.
Evelyn's Memorial Garden and butterfly garden
The park's quietest corner is the Evelyn's Memorial Garden at the southeastern entrance off Mulberry Lane: a sensory garden with whimsical details created as a tribute to Evelyn Rubenstein. The adjacent butterfly garden is planted with native species suited to Houston's heat and is at its best on mild mornings in spring and fall.
Tips and best time to visit
October through April is when Houston's outdoor weather cooperates. Fall and spring evenings are especially good for concerts. Summer mornings before 9 AM work for the playground and splash pad before the heat sets in. Weekends from noon to 4 PM are the busiest period — both lots fill, the playground gets crowded, and Betsy's has a wait. Weekday mornings and Thursday/Friday concert evenings offer the best combination of activity and space.
Restrooms are on-site. Private events occasionally reserve portions of the Great Lawn, so check the park calendar before planning a concert night around a specific date.
Getting there and parking
Address: 4400 Bellaire Boulevard, Bellaire, TX 77401
Two free lots serve the park:
- West lot — enter off Newcastle Street

Both lots are small and fill quickly on busy weekends. Free street parking on Newcastle and Mulberry is usually available when the lots are full. From the 610 Loop South, exit at Bellaire Boulevard and head west — the park is about half a mile from the freeway.
Nearby food and other parks
Betsy's covers everything from coffee to dinner, but Bellaire's restaurant row has considerable depth along Bellaire Boulevard, especially in the Chinatown stretch a few miles west. If you're exploring the neighborhood more broadly, the Bellaire area guide covers the surrounding streets.
