- Houston Sports Teams: Where They Play and How to See a Game
Houston has five major professional sports teams — the Astros, Texans, Rockets, Dynamo and Dash — competing year-round within a few miles of downtown. Add the Gamblers (United Football League) and, when active, the SaberCats (Major League Rugby), and the city offers live professional sports in nearly every month of the year. This guide covers every team, their stadium, their season, and the honest answer on what it actually costs to get through the gate.

How we chose
This guide covers every team with a current franchise in a national professional league and a home market in Houston. Season windows come from each team's official site. Ticket price notes reflect the team's own ticketing patterns; prices change dynamically, so treat any range as a starting point and check the official site before you buy.
Houston Astros — Daikin Park
501 Crawford St · EaDo/downtown edge · season: April–October (plus playoffs)
The Astros play at Daikin Park, which longtime Houstonians still call Minute Maid Park. The retractable roof means no rainouts — a genuinely useful feature in a city that averages about 50 inches of rain a year. The park holds around 41,000 and is one of MLB's smaller venues, so sightlines from most sections are legitimately good.
One thing most visitors miss: the left-center field wall displays a working Union Pacific steam locomotive, an actual 1860s engine. It fires on every home run and every win. Arrive early enough to see it at field level.
Cheapest tickets: Upper deck and bleacher seats for weekday games against lower-ranked teams are the most accessible starting point. The Astros use dynamic pricing, so secondary market prices often drop on the morning of the game if demand is low.
Neighborhood: Daikin Park is on the edge of EaDo, Houston's arts and warehouse district. Pre-game restaurant options are in our EaDo food guide.
Houston Texans — Reliant Stadium
One Reliant Park · South Main corridor · season: September–January
Reliant Stadium sits inside Reliant Park — the same complex that hosts the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo each spring — about three miles south of downtown. The Texans play eight home games per regular season, plus any playoffs earned. The stadium holds approximately 72,000.
Reliant opened in 2002 as one of the first NFL stadiums with both a retractable roof and natural grass — a combination that still matters in Houston, where September games can hit triple digits. The roof decision is made on game day based on weather.
Cheapest tickets: NFL seats are the hardest to get inexpensively in any city. Best move: check the secondary market 48–72 hours before kickoff for non-division, non-prime-time games. Early-season weeknight games against small-market opponents typically carry the most available inventory.
Getting there: The Reliant Stadium guide covers parking lots, shuttle routes and transit options. See our downtown Houston parking guide for fans approaching from the north.
Houston Rockets — Toyota Center
1510 Polk St · downtown · season: October–April
The Toyota Center is a 10-to-15-minute walk from most downtown hotels and two blocks from the Main Street Square METRO stop. The arena seats around 18,000 for basketball. The lower bowl is notably steep, which brings fans close to the court and makes crowd noise carry more than in most arenas.
Cheapest tickets: Early-season games in October and November, and midweek games against Eastern Conference opponents, consistently offer the most accessible pricing. The Rockets typically make standing room available online before sold-out games.
Neighborhood: Toyota Center sits downtown near the Theater District. Pre-game dining is in our downtown restaurant guide. After the game, the downtown tunnel system connects to nearby garages even when it's raining.
Houston Dynamo FC and Houston Dash — Shell Energy Stadium
2200 Texas Ave · EaDo · MLS season: February–October; NWSL season: March–November
The Dynamo and Dash share Shell Energy Stadium, a 22,000-seat soccer-specific venue in EaDo that opened in 2012. It's the most intimate major-league experience in Houston — steep seating, close proximity to the pitch, and active supporter sections behind each goal create real atmosphere even during mid-table regular-season matches.
The Dynamo have the most decorated early history of any Houston franchise: they won back-to-back MLS Cup championships in their very first two seasons, 2006 and 2007. No MLS expansion team has come close to matching that since.
Cheapest tickets: MLS and NWSL games are consistently the most wallet-friendly major-league option in Houston. The Dash offers accessible single-game pricing for most of the season. The Dynamo's North End supporter section (Section 119) sells standing room at some of the lowest prices in the stadium — and it's also the loudest section in the building.
Houston SaberCats — Major League Rugby
Season: February–June (check team site for 2026+ status)
The SaberCats are Houston's professional rugby union franchise in Major League Rugby, one of the fastest-growing leagues in North America. The team paused operations for the 2026 MLR season; check majorleaguerugby.com for current status before planning a trip. When active, SaberCats tickets are consistently among the lowest prices in Houston professional sports, and the sport's pace — 80 minutes of near-constant play with full-contact tackles, line-outs and scrums — makes it one of the most entertaining first-time live sports experiences in the city. No prior rugby knowledge required.
Houston Gamblers — United Football League
Season: February–June · Shell Energy Stadium, EaDo
The Gamblers compete in the United Football League, the spring football league formed by the merger of the XFL and USFL. Home games are played at Shell Energy Stadium in EaDo, with a fraction of the crowd a Texans game draws — which means you can typically sit close to the field for well under the cost of a regular NFL ticket. The UFL runs an eight-game regular season compressed into about three months.
Inside tip: If you want to take someone to their first live football game without the NFL price tag, a Gamblers home game is the move. Parking is easy, tickets are accessible, and the atmosphere is relaxed.
Cheapest tickets across all seven venues
One rule applies everywhere: buy through the team's official site or their official authorized ticket partner first. Third-party resellers add fees that can exceed the face value of the cheapest seats.
- Astros: Dynamic pricing — check the morning of a late-August weekday game for the lowest secondary market prices.
- Texans: Secondary market, 48–72 hours before kickoff, for non-rivalry games.
- Rockets: Weeknight games against Eastern Conference opponents in October–November.
- Dynamo/Dash: Direct from the team site. Supporter-section standing room is often under $20.
- Gamblers/SaberCats: Walk-up tickets are typically available at the gate when the team is active.
