- Public Basketball Courts in Houston: 9 Spots for Pickup Runs
Houston has reliable public basketball courts for pickup games across every quadrant of the city. The best outdoor run is the covered pavilion at MacGregor Park in the Third Ward — what Courts of the World calls the mecca of outdoor basketball in Texas, and the place where Houston’s basketball mythology started. Several courts are covered for afternoon rain and summer heat, most are lit for evening games, and two city recreation centers have indoor courts when the summer humidity wins.
This list covers nine courts with active pickup scenes, confirmed infrastructure (cover, lights, or both), and current open status verified via official city or park sources as of October 2026.
The quick list
- Most legendary outdoor court: MacGregor Park Pavilion, Third Ward — covered, lit, and the starting point for Houston basketball history.
- Organized Saturday pickup: Emancipation Park — free indoor gym, noon to 1:45pm Saturdays. Photo ID required.
- Under cover near the Heights trail: Lawrence Park, Greater Heights — large covered pavilion on the Heights Hike and Bike Trail.
- Half courts with regular runs: Spotts Park, The Heights — two covered half courts, lit at night.
- Night games in the East End: Mason Park — lit until 10pm most nights, full court.
- Fifth Ward under cover: Finnigan Park — covered courts, lit, open 6am to 10pm daily.
- Historic indoor gym: Fondé Recreation Center, Fourth Ward — hardwood floors and a serious pickup culture.
- Washington Avenue corridor: Cottage Grove Park — covered pavilion with four baskets.
- Northwest pickup run: Lincoln Park, Acres Home — lit courts and a consistent local run.
How we chose
Each court on this list has at least one feature that makes it worth the trip in Houston specifically: a covered roof for afternoon rain and summer heat, lights for evening games, or a pickup culture strong enough that you can show up and find a run. We confirmed every court was open via an official city or park source as of October 2026.
Two pavilions were left off because they are closed for repairs: Agnes Moffitt (closed through December 2026 for a full concrete and structural rebuild) and Kerr Pavilion (closed until further notice for roof work). Check the live closures list at https://www.houstontx.gov/parks/parkprojects-repairs.html before driving to any city park.
Third Ward: where Houston basketball history was made
MacGregor Park Basketball Pavilion
5225 Calhoun Rd, Third Ward · covered pavilion · lit · next to Texas Southern University
MacGregor Park’s basketball pavilion is covered by a distinctive arched structure built specifically for the courts. Courts of the World calls it the mecca of outdoor basketball in Texas, and the history behind that reputation is real: Houston legends including Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, and Moses Malone all played on the outdoor courts of the Third Ward before reaching the NBA. The run at MacGregor is consistent on weekend afternoons and summer evenings, and the courts are lit for night play.
Important note for 2026: the broader MacGregor Park is in Phase One of a major renovation that began August 2026. The basketball pavilion is open during this phase. Other sections of the park — tennis center, disc golf, some parking lots — are closed. Phase Two improvements to the pavilion itself are scheduled for a later phase. Verify pavilion access at https://houstonparksboard.org/macgregor-park/ before making a long drive.
Best for: anyone who wants to play on the court where Houston basketball history was made.
Emancipation Park
3018 Emancipation Ave, Third Ward · indoor gym + outdoor courts · organized Saturday pickup
Emancipation Park in Houston’s Third Ward is the oldest public park in Texas, established in 1872 by freed people to commemorate the first Juneteenth. A $33.6 million renovation completed in 2017 added a full indoor gymnasium. The gym hosts free adult pickup basketball on Saturdays from noon to 1:45pm. Bring a valid photo ID; the indoor gym requires it for adults. Regular gym hours are Monday through Thursday 9am to 9pm, Friday 9am to 8pm, and Saturday 10am to 2pm (closed Sunday). The park also has outdoor lighted sports fields.
Best for: players who want a structured weekly run or an air-conditioned indoor option during Houston summer.
The Heights corridor
Lawrence Park
725 Lawrence St, Greater Heights · large covered pavilion · on the Heights Hike and Bike Trail
Lawrence Park in the Greater Heights has a large covered basketball pavilion and sits directly on the Heights Hike and Bike Trail. The covered structure makes it one of the more practical outdoor courts during Houston’s rainy season or on brutally hot afternoons. The park is compact but the court is full-size, and trail access makes it easy to combine a pickup run here with a ride along the bayou greenway.
Best for: Heights-area players and anyone combining a game with the trail system.
Spotts Park
401 S Heights Blvd, The Heights · two covered half courts · lit
Spotts Park in The Heights has two covered half courts with lighting for evening play. The half-court format draws 4-on-4 runs and the park sees consistent pickup traffic. City park hours run 6:30am to 6pm on weekdays and to 6:30pm on Sundays.
Best for: half-court pickup runs in the Heights without the drive to MacGregor.
East End
Mason Park
541 S 75th St, East End · full court · lit until 10pm
Mason Park in Houston’s East End has a full basketball court lit until 10pm most nights. The park is one of the most-reviewed in the East End, and the court draws regular evening and weekend traffic in summer. Hours are typically Monday through Thursday 8am to 10pm and Friday 8am to 9pm; weekend hours vary, so check the Houston parks guide for current schedules.
The East End run is active without being as crowded as MacGregor, which suits players who want a competitive game without waiting for next.
Best for: evening games and East End residents who want a court that stays lit late.
Fifth Ward
Finnigan Park
4900 Providence St, Fifth Ward · covered courts · lit · open 6am–10pm
Finnigan Park in Houston’s Fifth Ward, managed by Harris County Precinct 1, has covered basketball courts that are lit from 6am to 10pm daily. The covered structure is one of the few spots in this part of the city where play continues through a passing afternoon thunderstorm. Courts are well-maintained and draw a consistent neighborhood crowd.
Best for: Fifth Ward residents and early-morning or late-evening runs under cover.
Fourth Ward and downtown
Fondé Recreation Center
110 Sabine St, Fourth Ward · indoor hardwood courts · open weekdays and Saturday
Fondé Recreation Center sits a few blocks from downtown Houston in the Fourth Ward and has a reputation as one of the city’s most storied indoor courts. The gym has hardwood floors and a regular weekday pickup crowd. Hours are typically Monday through Friday 9am to 8pm and Saturday 8am to 2pm; closed Sunday. Admission is low-cost for City of Houston residents. Phone: 713-226-4466.
Fondé is a short walk from Toyota Center and the stadiums in the Sports District, making it a good option before a Houston Rockets game.
Best for: indoor pickup on hardwood with a competitive, regular crowd.
Washington Avenue corridor
Cottage Grove Park
2100 Arabelle St, Cottage Grove · covered pavilion · four baskets · open 7am–9pm
Cottage Grove Park, managed jointly by Harris County Precinct 4 and the City of Houston, has a covered pavilion with four basketball baskets. Hours are typically 7am to 9pm daily (closed Thanksgiving, December 24–25, and January 1). The park sits in the Washington Avenue corridor between the Heights and Memorial, serving a mix of families and pickup players from the west side.
Best for: Washington Avenue and Cottage Grove players who want a covered court close to home.
Northwest Houston
Lincoln Park
979 Grenshaw St, Acres Home · lit courts · Harris County Precinct 1
Lincoln Park in Acres Home, northwest Houston, is a Harris County Precinct 1 park with lit basketball courts and a consistent local pickup scene. The park opens at 6am and the courts run into the evening. It is notably less crowded than MacGregor — ideal for players who want a lower-key, reliable run without driving to the Third Ward.
Best for: northwest Houston residents who want a well-lit neighborhood court.
What about indoor options when the heat wins?
Houston summer heat from June through September can make outdoor noon games genuinely uncomfortable. Two indoor options worth knowing:
Emancipation Park indoor gym (3018 Emancipation Ave, Third Ward): organized Saturday pickup noon to 1:45pm, plus open gym weekdays. Bring photo ID; adults only. See the gym schedule at https://epconservancy.org/indoor-gym/.
YMCA of Greater Houston: multiple Houston locations have regulation indoor courts with drop-in basketball during open gym hours. Membership required. Locations with confirmed courts include the Tellepsen Family Downtown YMCA (808 Pease St) and the Houston Texans YMCA (5202 Griggs Rd). Check current schedules at https://ymcahouston.org/locations.
Save this: before you go
- Most outdoor city park courts are free. Fondé Recreation Center charges a small admission; YMCA requires membership. Emancipation Park’s indoor gym is free for adults with photo ID.
- Covered courts for rain and heat: MacGregor, Emancipation, Lawrence, Spotts, Finnigan, and Cottage Grove all have covered pavilions.
- Lit courts for evening runs: MacGregor, Spotts, Mason Park, Finnigan, and Lincoln Park all have confirmed lighting.
- The busiest nights at MacGregor are Friday and Saturday evenings. Weekday evenings are less crowded if you want a faster run.
- Always check houstontx.gov/parks for closures before driving. Two pavilions (Agnes Moffitt and Kerr) are closed through at least late 2026.
