Casinos Near Houston: Naskila, Lake Charles, and Every Legal Option

Casinos near Houston illustration: playing cards, poker chips, and dice against the Houston night skyline

The closest legal casino to Houston is a 50-mile drive, not a five-minute Uber. Texas state law bans commercial casinos and almost all forms of gambling, which means that if you want a casino floor, you are either heading to a tribal property inside the state or crossing into Louisiana. Here is exactly what you will find at each stop, with drive times and what to expect.

The quick list

  • Closest in-state gaming: Naskila Gaming, Livingston, TX — about 1 hour north; bingo-based electronic machines only, no table games
  • Closest full casino: Delta Downs, Vinton, LA — about 1.5 hours east on I-10; first full Louisiana casino floor for Houston drivers
  • Largest resort, east corridor: L'Auberge Casino Resort, Lake Charles, LA — about 2.5 hours east; 1,000-room tower resort
  • Most gaming variety: Golden Nugget Lake Charles — 1,600+ slot machines, 70+ table games, 11 restaurants
  • Best resort value overall: Coushatta Casino Resort, Kinder, LA — about 2.5 hours west on I-10; described on its own site as Louisiana's largest casino resort
  • For Caesars Rewards members: Horseshoe Lake Charles (formerly Isle of Capri) — rebuilt by Caesars after Hurricane Laura, 1,000 slots, 253-room hotel
  • Horse racing without leaving Houston: Sam Houston Race Park, northwest Houston — live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse meets, year-round simulcast
  • Poker only, no drive needed: Texas Card House, Galleria area — open 24/7, cash games and tournaments

How we chose

Every venue here is confirmed open via its own official website as of October 2026. We focused on legal, operating destinations within roughly three hours of Houston, with verified current hours. We left out Shreveport casinos (4.5+ hours) and any venue that had not published current hours on an official site. Sam Houston Race Park and Texas Card House are Houston-based alternatives for days you do not want to make the drive to Louisiana.

In Houston: two legal options before you hit the road

Sam Houston Race Park

Northwest Houston — 7575 N. Sam Houston Pkwy W — open Wednesday through Sunday

Sam Houston Race Park is the only legal betting venue inside Houston city limits. The Thoroughbred meet runs from January through early April, followed by a Quarter Horse meet through mid-June. Live racing runs Friday evenings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons; simulcast wagering on races from tracks nationwide runs Wednesday through Sunday. The park also offers sports betting and hosts major stakes races, including the Houston Ladies Classic (Grade 3) in January and Texas Champions Day in March.

This is not a casino — there are no slot machines or table games — but it is the largest legal gambling operation in Houston proper, and a race night at the park is a worthwhile evening on its own.

Best for: a racing night out without leaving the city. Add dinner from our Houston nightlife guide.

Texas Card House

Galleria area — 6100 Westheimer Rd, Suite 142 — open 24/7

Texas Card House is a legal poker club operating under the Texas private-club membership model. You pay a membership fee (weekly, monthly, or annual) and an hourly seat fee to play. The Houston location near the Galleria runs No Limit Hold'em and Pot Limit Omaha cash games around the clock, plus regular tournaments, with an in-house restaurant and bar.

Be clear on what this is: poker only. No slot machines, no blackjack, no roulette. If table games or slots are what you want, you need to drive.

Best for: poker players who want to stay in Houston.

50 miles north: the only casino-style gaming in Texas near Houston

Naskila Gaming

Livingston, TX — 540 State Park Road 56 — about 1 hour north on US-59

Here is the fact most Houstonians do not know: the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe has lived on their East Texas reservation for more than 200 years, making it one of the oldest reservations in the state. Their gaming floor at Naskila is the only casino-style gaming within Texas that is practical for a Houston day trip.

The important caveat: Texas law restricts what tribal gaming can offer here. Naskila runs bingo-based electronic gaming machines, not slot machines in the traditional sense. The floor has more than 1,000 machines across 30,000 square feet. There are no table games, no poker room, and no hotel on-site. Dining is at Cafe Itto Si and Timbers Grille. A Players Club loyalty program tracks your play, and the Naskila Express offers bus service from Houston for those who prefer not to drive.

The drive is part of the appeal: about an hour north on US-59 through the Piney Woods, with the landscape shifting from Houston sprawl to East Texas forest before you reach Livingston.

Best for: Houston residents who want a gaming outing without crossing into Louisiana. Check day trips from Houston if you want to combine it with a longer excursion.

90 miles east: the first full casino across the state line

Delta Downs Racetrack Casino Hotel

Vinton, LA — 2717 Delta Downs Drive — about 1.5 hours east on I-10

Delta Downs sits just over the Texas–Louisiana border near Beaumont and describes itself on its own site as “located on the Texas border near Houston & Lake Charles.” Boyd Gaming operates this property with a full casino floor (slots, table games, sportsbook, and off-track betting), a live horse racing track, a hotel, and the Delta Event Center for concerts and events.

If the goal is the shortest drive to a full Louisiana casino, this is your answer. The gaming floor is smaller than the Lake Charles resorts, but the combination of horse racing, full casino, and hotel makes it a legitimate one-stop overnight destination.

Best for: the quickest full-casino fix east of Houston, or anyone who wants horse racing alongside table games.

140–150 miles: the Lake Charles cluster and Coushatta

This is where the resort casino experience lives. Lake Charles, Louisiana is about 2.5 hours east of Houston on I-10, and Kinder (home of Coushatta) is about 2.5 hours west on I-10 in the opposite direction. Both are better as overnight trips than day drives.

L’Auberge Casino Resort Lake Charles

Lake Charles, LA — 777 Avenue L’Auberge — about 2.5 hours east on I-10

L'Auberge is the flagship Lake Charles resort: a high-rise hotel tower with hundreds of rooms, a full casino floor, an 18-hole golf course, resort pools with lazy rivers, a full-service spa, and multiple dining outlets. It is operated by Penn Entertainment and is open 24/7.

Best for: couples or groups who want a resort trip without flying.

Golden Nugget Lake Charles

Lake Charles, LA — 2550 Golden Nugget Blvd — about 2.5 hours east on I-10

Golden Nugget Lake Charles has the largest gaming floor in the Lake Charles area: more than 70,000 square feet, 1,600+ slot machines, and 70+ table games. It also runs 11 on-site restaurants, the H2O pool complex with a lazy river, waterfall grotto, and private cabanas, a Tom Fazio championship golf course, a private beach, a marina, and a spa.

Best for: slots players and groups who want maximum dining options under one roof.

Horseshoe Lake Charles

Westlake, LA — 100 Westlake Ave — about 2.5 hours east on I-10

Horseshoe Lake Charles is the Caesars-operated property rebuilt after Hurricane Laura damaged the original Isle of Capri casino in 2020. The rebuilt casino runs 60,000 square feet of gaming, 1,000 slot machines, and table games, with a 253-room hotel, pool, and fitness center. It earns and redeems Caesars Rewards points across the Caesars network, which is a meaningful benefit if you already hold status there.

Best for: Caesars Rewards members and anyone who wants a full casino hotel without the larger resort price tag.

Coushatta Casino Resort

Kinder, LA — 777 Coushatta Drive — about 2.5 hours west on I-10

Coushatta is operated by the Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana and describes itself on its own site as Louisiana's largest casino resort. The scale matches that claim: roughly 1,000 rooms across multiple hotel properties (the new Legacy Tower, The Grand Hotel, Seven Clans Hotel, and The Inn at Coushatta), eight dining venues including a Starbucks, a 312-seat bingo hall, live poker, sports betting, off-track betting, and the Koasati Pines Golf Course.

One geographic detail matters here: Coushatta is west of Houston on I-10, while Lake Charles is east. Visitors from Sugar Land, Katy, or anywhere along the southwest corridor will typically find Coushatta closer than Lake Charles. A Kids Quest entertainment center on-site makes it the strongest family option on the list.

Best for: west-side Houston residents, poker players, and families. Also fits neatly with Katy area day trips.

Save this: before you go

  • No Louisiana drive needed: Naskila Gaming (machines only), Sam Houston Race Park (horse racing), Texas Card House (poker only)
  • Shortest drive to a full casino: Delta Downs, about 90 miles east on I-10
  • Best resort trip east: Lake Charles cluster — pick one property, arrive Saturday morning, leave Sunday; book the room before you drive
  • Best resort trip west: Coushatta, especially if you live west of the 610 Loop
  • Book ahead. All four resort properties fill up on weekends and during major events
  • Sign up for the loyalty cards before your first visit: Golden Nugget 24K Select, Caesars Rewards (for Horseshoe), Coushatta’s own card, and L'Auberge’s rewards program are free to join
  • Minimum age: 21 at Louisiana casinos, 21 at Naskila Gaming, 18+ at Texas Card House
  • Drive sober. If you plan to drink, designate a driver before you leave Houston, or check if your resort hotel has availability for a full overnight
