Day trips from Houston
Beaches, bay towns, small-town Texas and state parks, all within an easy drive of the city.
One of the best things about living in or visiting Houston is how much is within a day’s drive. Head south and you reach the Gulf Coast. Head west and the land rolls toward small towns, wildflower routes and the edge of the Hill Country. Head north and you are in pine forest. None of it needs an overnight bag.
The coast
Galveston Island is the classic Houston beach day, about an hour to the southeast, with the Seawall, the historic Strand district and the beaches beyond. Closer in, Kemah’s boardwalk sits on Galveston Bay. Our beaches guide compares the stretches of sand within reach of the city.
Inland
West and northwest of the city, small towns with historic squares, dance halls and bakeries make easy half-day trips, and spring brings wildflowers to the roadsides. Our day trips guide lists twelve drives with what to do at each.
Before you go
Leave early on weekends: the routes out of Houston are busiest on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons. In summer, plan beach days around the heat and check the forecast for Gulf storms. A cooler with water and snacks saves a lot of stops along the way.
Forests and water
North of the city, the Sam Houston National Forest offers hiking and camping in East Texas pine country, and the lakes north of Houston are popular for boating and fishing in warm weather. Closer to home, several of the area’s state parks make easy morning trips for a walk, a picnic or birdwatching along the coast.
With kids
Families usually want a short drive and a sure thing. The beaches, the Kemah boardwalk and the region’s water parks all deliver; our water parks guide compares every option near the city. Space Center Houston in Clear Lake is another easy half-day from most of town, and our visitor guide covers tickets and timing.
