Sam Houston Race Park (SHRP) is a horse racing facility and entertainment complex at 7575 N. Sam Houston Pkwy W. in northwest Houston, about a mile east of Jersey Village. It hosts two live racing seasons each year — Thoroughbred in winter and spring, Quarter Horse in late spring — along with simulcast wagering nearly every day of the week and a fall concert series on the infield stage. Admission on live racing nights starts at $8 for adults. Parking is free.

If you have never been to a horse race, Sam Houston Race Park is one of the most approachable tracks in Texas to try it: the minimum bet is $2, the grandstand is air-conditioned, and the track publishes a detailed Fan Guide covering almost every question you will have before the first race goes to the gate.

What to see and do

The main event is live Thoroughbred or Quarter Horse racing, depending on the season. A typical race night runs eight to twelve races with the card concluding around 10:30 to 11 PM. Between races you can study the horses in the walking ring before they load, place wagers at the teller windows or self-service machines, or have dinner in the grandstand with a view of the track.

On major stakes Saturdays — closing day of either meet draws the biggest purses and the largest crowds — the atmosphere is closer to a proper race-day event. Opening weekends also have a celebratory feel, especially for the 2026–2027 Thoroughbred season (more on that below).

On non-racing days, the park runs simulcast wagering on races from tracks around the country, including Oaklawn, Gulfstream, Del Mar, and Saratoga. Admission is free on simulcast days. A simulcast afternoon is a low-pressure way to practice reading a racing program before your first live night.

Racing seasons: when does Sam Houston Race Park run?

Thoroughbred season

Thoroughbred racing typically runs from December or January through early April. Racing begins with Friday and Saturday nights, then Thursday evenings are added in February. First post varies through the meet — check the official schedule at shrp.com before you go.

2026–2027 season dates: Live racing opens Friday, December 18, 2026 — the first December opening at Sam Houston Race Park in 17 years — and closes Saturday, April 3, 2027. Racing is two nights per week (Friday and Saturday) through January, with Thursday added in February.

The Thoroughbred meet carries more than $2,000,000 in total stakes purses. Notable races include the Houston Ladies Classic, the John B. Connally Turf Cup, and the inaugural $150,000 TTA Sales Futurity on December 26, 2026 — the first time the Texas Thoroughbred Association's marquee futurity has been run at Sam Houston. The full stakes schedule is posted as a PDF at shrp.com.

Quarter Horse season

Quarter Horse racing typically runs mid-April through mid-June on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at a 6:30 PM first post.

2026 season dates: The 2026 meet ran April 16 through June 13.

The standout race is the $541,000 Texas Breeders' Futurity — the only futurity in Texas restricted exclusively to Texas-bred juvenile Quarter Horses, run in early May. Closing day features the $150,000 Sam Houston Futurity (G2), the $50,000 Willie Hickman Memorial Stakes (G2), and the $50,000 Jesse Yoakum Memorial 870 Stakes (G3), plus other graded stakes races.

Simulcast wagering

Between live racing meets, the park hosts simulcast wagering Wednesday through Sunday with gates typically opening at 10:30 AM. Admission is free. This is also available during live racing weeks, so if you want to arrive early and watch out-of-state races before post time, you can.

When is the best time to visit Sam Houston Race Park?

For first-timers, a Friday evening early in the Thoroughbred meet is the sweet spot. Crowds are moderate, you have room to walk the facility before the first race, and the cooler-weather season makes the outdoor terrace comfortable. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before post time.

For a larger event: go on a major stakes Saturday. Closing day of either meet draws the most competitive horses, the biggest crowds, and the most energy in the grandstand. Box seats sell out on those nights — reserve in advance.

For a concert night: Saturday evenings during the fall racing calendar often feature a live act on the infield stage. Check the Entertainment page at shrp.com to see what is scheduled.

The Quarter Horse season runs in Houston's spring heat, which means April and May evenings can be warm. The Thoroughbred season runs December through March, when outdoor terrace seating is genuinely comfortable.

How to bet your first race

The single most important rule: use the horse's number, not its name, at the betting window. The teller will not know what you mean if you say "the gray one."

When you reach the window, say four things in order: the track name, the race number, your bet amount, and the horse number. For example: Sam Houston, Race 3, two dollars Win on number 5. The teller prints your ticket.

The three simplest bet types:

  • Win — your horse finishes first. Minimum $2.
  • Place — your horse finishes first or second. Minimum $2.
  • Show — your horse finishes first, second, or third. Minimum $2.

Show bets are the lowest-risk starting point. Win pays more when it lands. A $2 Win or Show bet on one horse per race lets you stay in the action for a full nine-race card without spending much.

Once you are comfortable, try combination bets:

  • Exacta — first two finishers in exact order. Minimum $1.
  • Trifecta — first three finishers in exact order. Minimum $0.50.
  • Daily Double — winners of two consecutive races. Minimum $1.

Multi-race wagers include Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, and Pick 6 (minimums from $0.50 to $1.00), a Superfecta ($0.10 minimum picking the first four finishers in order), and the Jackpot Hi-5 ($0.20 minimum). The full wagering guide is at shrp.com/simulcast/wagering-101.

Pick up a paper racing program at the gate. It lists each horse's recent form, jockey, trainer, and odds. Focus on the horse's last three finishes and current morning-line odds — that is enough to make a reasoned decision without decoding every column.

One insider detail that surprises first-timers: the odds displayed on the tote board change right up until the gate opens, because they reflect the actual pool of money wagered. A 5-to-1 horse does not mean the track predicts it to win one in five times — it means 5-to-1 is the current implied probability based on what bettors have put in. Watching the odds shift in the last two minutes of wagering tells you where the sharp money is going.

Getting there and parking

The park is at 7575 N. Sam Houston Pkwy W., Houston, TX 77064, just off the Sam Houston Tollway (Beltway 8) west of US-290. From downtown Houston, the drive is roughly 25 minutes via I-10 West to Beltway 8 North, or via US-290 Northwest to Beltway 8.

General parking is free on both live racing days and simulcast days. The parking lot holds approximately 3,500 vehicles. There is no fee and no parking structure — surface lots surround the facility.

There is no direct METRO rail stop at the park; rideshare or a designated driver is the most practical option if your group plans to bet seriously.

Admission and seating

On live racing nights: adults $8, seniors 62 and older $5, children ages 4–12 $5, and children under 4 are free. Counter seats — reserved spots along the grandstand windows — cost an additional $5 per person. Box seats (a reserved section closer to the track rail) are $15 for three seats, $20 for four seats, or $25 for five seats. Check shrp.com/tickets for current pricing; rates can change between meets.

The grandstand has climate-controlled indoor seating with large windows overlooking the track, plus open-air terrace areas. The infield is used for concerts and special events.

Concerts and special events

Sam Houston Race Park runs a fall concert series — the Sam Houston Stampede Concert Series — on Saturday nights tied to racing weekends. Past performers have included Billy Currington, Randy Houser, and La Mafia. Shows take place on the infield stage and are ticketed separately from race admission. The series typically includes two to three dates in September and October, mixing country and Latin acts.

The venue also hosts theme nights and special event weekends across both live meets: opening night celebrations, major stakes-race Saturdays with added entertainment, and the annual Houston Betting Championship. Check the Events section at shrp.com for current listings.

For a broader list of outdoor performance venues around Houston, see our outdoor concerts guide and the full Houston live music venue guide. If country music is driving your group's decision, our line dancing and honky-tonks guide has options to continue the night after the races.

Food and dining

The Winner's Circle Restaurant on the grandstand level offers a buffet on race nights: typically three proteins, two starches, two vegetables, a salad bar, soups, and freshly baked breads. Dietary-friendly options are available. The Jockey Club is a members-only dining room with a more elevated buffet featuring seafood, gourmet pastas, carving stations, and gourmet desserts. Concession stands throughout the grandstand cover quick bites and drinks.

Reservations for the Winner's Circle Restaurant are recommended on busy stakes nights. Confirm hours and reservation options at shrp.com/dining before you go.

Nearby things to do

The park sits close to the Jersey Village community, and Cypress is a short drive north with a full range of restaurants, shopping, and activities if you want to make a day of it.

A race night works well as a date night in Houston — dinner at the Winner's Circle, a few races, and a concert if one follows the card. Families are welcome on race nights, with children admitted at a discounted rate and the grandstand setting easy to navigate with kids.

For Houston's other major equestrian event, see our guide to the Pin Oak Charity Horse Show, held annually in the spring at NRG Center.
