Wakeboarding Near Houston: Cable Parks, Ski Lakes and Boat Rentals

Date Published

Wakeboarding near Houston illustration: wakeboarder towed by cable tower on a lake with the Houston skyline at night

Houston has three freshwater lakes worth driving to for water sports: Lake Conroe 45 minutes north, Lake Livingston about 90 miles northeast, and Lake Houston closer still. All three support water skiing, wakeboarding, and wake surfing behind a rental or charter boat. Cable parks — where an overhead pulley system replaces the boat — have had a harder run near the city. Wake Nation Houston in Rosharon and Hangar 9 Wake Park in Conroe both closed in recent years, leaving the nearest cable option a 2.5-hour drive to Central Texas. This guide covers the verified boat-based picks first, then where to go if cable riding is what you specifically want.

Best months: May through September for peak season and warm water. March–April and October bring cooler air, thinner crowds, and calmer weekday mornings. On Lake Conroe, early starts (before 9 a.m.) catch the flat-water window locals call "the glass" — when weekend boat traffic has not yet built up and the surface looks like a mirror.

How we chose

Every operator on this list has a current website or a Yelp listing updated in 2026 confirming they are open. We looked for equipment capable of towing a skier or wakeboarder — not just pontoons or paddleboards. Operators whose listings showed as closed or whose domain had lapsed were excluded. Prices and hours change seasonally; check each official site before you make the drive.

Lake Conroe: the hub for Houston water sports

Lake Conroe is a 21,000-acre reservoir about 45 miles north of downtown Houston, created in 1973 when the West Fork of the San Jacinto River was dammed. The western shore along Highway 105 in Montgomery has more boat rental companies per mile than anywhere else in the Houston region. Flat water in the early morning, warm temperatures from April through October, and a 45-minute drive from the 610 Loop make it the default answer to "where do Houstonians go to ski?"

1097 Watersports

Montgomery · 14970 Hwy 105 W · (936) 217-4155 · 1097watersports.com

The most straightforward boat rental on Lake Conroe for first-time skiers. Water ski equipment rents from $45 but must be added to a boat rental — you cannot rent skis without a boat. They also rent kneeboards and towable tubes. Operators born on or after September 1, 1993 must present a Boater Education Certificate at check-in. Book through their FareHarbor portal for current boat pricing and hourly rates.

Best for: Beginners who want to rent a boat and try water skiing without a guide.

Lake Conroe Water Sports

Montgomery · 14632 Hwy 105 W · (936) 447-3400 · lcws.biz · Open daily 10 am – 8 pm

Established in 2001 and, by their own account, the largest rental company on Lake Conroe. Boat and jet ski rentals with extended daily hours — one of the few operators open seven days a week. Useful when other locations are booked out on summer weekends.

Best for: Larger groups or last-minute weekend reservations.

Wake Up Watersports

Lake Conroe · (979) 219-5199 · Wed – Sun, 9 am – 8 pm

Wake Up runs a genuine wake boat capable of a shaped wake for wake surfing or a clean, skippable flat for water skiing. You can wakeboard, water ski, wake surf, or tube. The boat is a substantial step up from a basic pontoon if you actually want to learn to ride rather than just float.

Insider tip: A dedicated wake boat carries a ballast system that sculpts the wave shape. Ask the captain to adjust ballast weight for your riding style — a lighter ballast gives a longer, mellow wave for beginners; heavier dials in a steep, punchy wake for riders ready to start attempting surface tricks.

Best for: Groups who want a premium wake boat with a captain and enough horsepower to pull multiple riders back to back.

Perfection Water Sports

Montgomery · 17910 Hwy 105 W · (281) 397-2442 · lakeconroeboat.com · Wed – Fri 9 am – 6 pm, Sat – Sun 9 am – 7 pm, closed Mon – Tue

Boat and jet ski rentals with wake surfing lessons and excursions explicitly listed on their site — one of the few Lake Conroe operators that offers a coached session alongside a standard rental. A good option if someone in your group has never been on a board and wants to start with instruction rather than trial and error.

Best for: Families who want a quick lesson before heading out on their own.

Wakesurf Conroe

Lake Conroe · wakesurfconroe.com · Thu – Sun, 9 am – sunset

A members-only wake surfing club for riders who want to improve without owning a boat. New visitors can book a trial session for $475 for up to four people — two hours on the water with a coach and all gear included. Monthly membership is $99, with subsequent sessions charged at a fuel-share rate rather than full charter pricing.

Insider tip: This is the most cost-efficient route to coached wake surfing on Lake Conroe if you plan to go more than once or twice. A single three-hour charter with an instructor elsewhere runs $700–900; four monthly sessions at the fuel-share rate costs a fraction of that total.

Best for: Riders who want to genuinely improve their wake surfing technique, not just float behind a boat.

Yolo Lake Conroe

Montgomery · 14850 Diamondhead North · (936) 666-1020 · yololakeconroe.com

Captain-led experiences on Lake Conroe with up to six guests. Their three-hour Wake Surfing Lessons package includes an instructor, premium surfboards, and personalized coaching. They also run family lake day packages, sunset cruises, and dock crawls for groups who want the guided experience without a specific lesson focus. Book through their online portal or by phone.

Best for: A first wake surf lesson or a full guided day on Lake Conroe for a mixed group.

Lake Livingston: calmer water northeast of Houston

Lake Livingston is an 82,600-acre reservoir about 90 miles northeast of Houston via US-59 and US-190, operated by the Trinity River Authority. It is considerably larger than Lake Conroe and draws less weekend boat traffic per acre, which translates to flatter water on weekday mornings. The drive is typically 1 hour 15 minutes without traffic, making it a genuine day trip from the city.

The Lake Life Rental Co.

Livingston · 125 Indian Hill Blvd · (936) 933-2119 · thelakelifecompanies.com · Daily 9 am – 5 pm

Lake Livingston's main rental operator, with motorized and non-motorized watercraft including wakeboards, tubes, jet skis, pontoons, and paddleboards. Yelp lists them as updated August 2026. Call ahead to confirm wake boat availability by type — their gear inventory includes boards and tow equipment but specific boat availability varies by day.

Best for: A quieter day on a large lake with fewer boats than Lake Conroe on a summer Saturday.

Blue Ox Boat Rentals

Lake Livingston · Beacon Bay area · (936) 628-5000 · blueoxboatrentals.com · Dawn to dusk, 4-hour minimum, gas included

Boat and watercraft rentals launching from the Beacon Bay area of Lake Livingston. Gas is included in the rental price, which is a genuine convenience on a lake the size of Livingston. A 4-hour minimum keeps day trips focused. Call to confirm current boat types and what tow gear is available before the drive out.

Best for: Half-day and full-day outings where you want gas included in a flat rate.

What about cable parks near Houston?

Cable parks replace the boat with an overhead tow-cable and pulley system. They are ideal for beginners because the cable speed stays consistent and you can fall without waiting for a boat to circle back. Houston had two within range, and both have closed: Wake Nation Houston in Rosharon was listed as closed on Yelp as of July 2026, and Hangar 9 Wake Park in Conroe permanently closed at the end of the 2023 season.

The nearest currently operating cable parks require a longer drive:

Texas Ski Ranch (6700 IH 35 N, New Braunfels, TX · 830-627-2843 · texasskiranch.com) runs two cable systems on a 70-acre complex. Beginner lessons are $99 per person on the smaller starter cable; additional participants are $39 each. Minimum age is 6. New Braunfels is about 175 miles from Houston — roughly 2.5 hours. Pair it with a Guadalupe River float trip the same day to make the longer drive worthwhile.

Waco Surf / BSR Cable Park in Waco is about 190 miles north, a similar drive time, and adds a large surf wave and floating obstacle course for a full day of riding.

Best time to go and quick logistics

For flat water: Tuesday through Thursday mornings in May, June, and September, before weekend traffic fills the boat ramps. Early July and August bring the warmest water (Lake Conroe typically reaches 85–90°F) but also the heaviest boat traffic — plan to launch by 8 a.m. or accept choppy conditions by midday.

Texas boating rules: Anyone born on or after September 1, 1993 must carry a Texas Boater Education Certificate to operate a motorized vessel. Several operators require it at check-in, so take the online course (about 3 hours, free through Texas Parks and Wildlife) before you go.

What to bring: Reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes, dry bag for keys and phones, a change of clothes. Most rental companies provide life vests; ask about helmet availability if you are new to wakeboarding.

Save this: Lake Conroe water sports day

  1. 7 am: Leave Houston on I-45 North toward Conroe; take TX-105 West toward Montgomery.
  2. 8:15 am: Launch. Morning water is typically flat — the best skiing and boarding window before boat traffic builds.
  3. 11 am: Refuel with food at a waterfront spot on the lake or in Montgomery.
  4. 12:30 pm: Second session or switch to jet skis if wake chop has built up.
  5. 3 pm: Head home before Sunday afternoon traffic backs up on I-45 southbound.
