Reliant Stadium — known as NRG Stadium from 2014 until August 2026, when it returned to its original name — is the Houston Texans' home field and one of the city's largest concert venues, located at 1 NRG Parkway near the Texas Medical Center. If your search says "NRG Stadium food," you're in the right place. The building hasn't changed, just the name on the door.
The concessions are Aramark-managed and run the standard NFL spectrum: Texas-style BBQ on the east lower concourse, nachos and draft beer on the west, and three named bars you can actually sit at. The blocks immediately surrounding the stadium have almost no walkable dining, so where you eat before kickoff depends on how far you drive on Kirby Drive or out to the East End.
What are the bag and payment rules?
Bags: One clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bag no larger than 12 × 6 × 12 inches — or a standard one-gallon zip-seal bag — is permitted. You may also carry one small clutch bag measuring no more than 4.5 × 6.5 inches. Backpacks and any non-clear bags are turned away at the security checkpoint.
Medical exceptions: Medically necessary items receive an exception after inspection. Food for young children is also permitted and should be clearly visible for security to review.
Payment: Most concession stands are cashless. Bring a debit or credit card, or use Apple Pay or Google Pay. There are no ATMs inside the stadium, so plan before you leave home.
Outside food and beverages: Not permitted. Security will ask you to discard outside items on entry.
Tickets: Mobile-only. Download the Houston Texans app before you arrive. There is no standard will-call window.
No re-entry: Once you leave the stadium, you cannot return to the same event.
What to order at the stadium: concessions by level
Getting to the stadium when gates open — two hours before kickoff — matters more for food than for parking. Lines at the popular stands are manageable right after entry and noticeably longer by halftime.
100-level (lower concourse), east side — BBQ stand
The east-side lower concourse has a Texas-style BBQ setup: brisket sandwiches and smoked sausage links. This is the standout concession pick for Texans games — more distinctly Texan than anything else on the general concourse. The brisket sandwich is the thing to order. Hit it in the first quarter; lines at the east-side BBQ stand double by halftime. See our best BBQ in Houston guide for where the local benchmarks sit.
100-level (lower concourse), west side — standard concessions
Nachos, hot dogs, pretzels, and draft beer on the west 100-level. Lines here tend to run shorter in the first 20 minutes after gates open, because much of the main parking flows from the east and fans enter the east concourse first. If you want beer and nachos and nothing else, head west immediately after entry.
300-level (upper deck) — same menu, shorter lines
The 300-level concession stands serve the same food as the 100-level. The difference is the crowd: upper-deck lines move noticeably faster on sellout days. If your seats are in the 300s, use your level's concessions and skip the walk down.
200-level (club) — premium options
Club-level access comes with sit-down seating, carved meats, an expanded beverage program, and far shorter lines. You need a club-level or suite ticket. If you have one, the food experience is categorically different from the general concourse.
The three bars worth knowing
Three named bar spaces sit inside the stadium and are worth knowing before you get there.
Bud Light Lounge — Sections 114–117, north field level
On the north side of the 100-level concourse, between Sections 114 and 117, the Bud Light Lounge has gameday music and faces the outside windows. It is the most visible gathering spot at field level near midfield. If you want a position near the railing, get there right after gates open. It fills on big games by the first quarter.
Bud Light Cantina — Section 139, southwest field level
A seated bar on the southwest corner of the field level, behind Section 139. Unlike the Lounge, this one has stools. If your seats are in the southwest end zone area or you simply want to sit down with a drink before kickoff, this is the better option of the two.
Crown Royal Saloon — South concourse, Gridiron TX
Located on the south concourse inside the Gridiron TX area, the Crown Royal Saloon runs live music, has multiple TVs, and gets cheerleader appearances on game days. It is the closest thing to an event within the event at Reliant. Budget an extra 20 minutes before kickoff if you want time here.
Getting there
Take the METRO Red Line. On game days, rail is faster than driving and faster than a rideshare caught in the postgame parking backup. Take the Red Line to Fannin South station and enter through Gate 2. The ride from downtown Houston takes roughly 20 minutes. You can leave immediately after the final whistle while most of the parking lot is still gridlocked. The METRO Houston guide has routes, fares, and extended service schedules for game days.
If you drive: Arrive 90 minutes before kickoff. Rideshare drop-off is at Yellow 35, Gate 16B, off Main Street — confirmed on the official Texans site.
If you tailgate: Tailgating is permitted in NRG Park lots with specific rules. Open flames must be extinguished before you enter the stadium. Each tailgate setup is required to have a fire extinguisher rated at minimum 2-A:10-B:C — a requirement most fans don't read until they're turned away at the gate. Confirm the full rules on the official Reliant Park site before you set up.
What to eat before you go in
The area immediately surrounding Reliant Park has no walkable restaurant district. Your best strategy is Kirby Drive (about 15 minutes north by car) or the East End (15 to 20 minutes by rideshare). These four restaurants have confirmed hours and are worth planning around.
Goode Company Barbeque — 5109 Kirby Drive, Upper Kirby
Goode Company Barbeque has served mesquite-smoked brisket, ribs, and sausage at 5109 Kirby Drive since 1977. The jalapeño cheese bread sandwich is a solid pre-game pick: it is filling, requires no utensils, and travels well. Typically open Sunday through Thursday until 8:30 p.m. and Friday through Saturday until 9 p.m.; check the official site before you go. About 15 minutes from the stadium by car.
Goode Company Seafood — 2621 Westpark Drive, Upper Kirby
Two miles from Goode Company BBQ, Goode Company Seafood at 2621 Westpark Drive does Gulf seafood over mesquite: campechana cocktail, Jim's Oysters Rockefeller, and a rotating Gulf daily catch. Typically open Sunday through Wednesday until 9 p.m., Thursday until 9:30 p.m., and Friday through Saturday until 10:30 p.m.; check the official site before you go. The campechana — shrimp, crab, pico de gallo, fire-roasted Anaheim peppers, and avocado — is the lighter choice before a long game.
The Original Ninfa's on Navigation — 2704 Navigation Blvd, East End
Ninfa's on Navigation is where Houston's Tex-Mex fajita tradition started. Mamá Ninfa Laurenzo opened this East End restaurant in 1973 and created tacos al carbon here — the dish that became a city-wide obsession. The original location is still operating, about 15 to 20 minutes from the stadium by car or rideshare. Typically open Monday through Thursday until 10 p.m. and Friday through Saturday until 11 p.m.; check the official site before you go. For the full Tex-Mex landscape, see our best Tex-Mex in Houston guide.
Pinkerton's Barbecue — 3801 Farnham Street, Upper Kirby
Pinkerton's Upper Kirby at 3801 Farnham Street is the closer of the two Houston Pinkerton's locations to Reliant Stadium. They smoke brisket, ribs, and sausage overnight over post oak and mesquite. Typically open Tuesday through Sunday until 9 p.m. (10 p.m. Friday and Saturday), closed Mondays, and until sold out — check the official site before you go. Drive south on Main Street from Upper Kirby to reach the stadium in under 15 minutes. The best restaurants in Upper Kirby guide covers more of the neighborhood.
Save this: game day food checklist
- Clear bag: 12 × 6 × 12 inches max, or one-gallon zip-seal bag — plus one small clutch
- Bring a card; most stands are cashless and there are no in-stadium ATMs
- No re-entry once you leave the stadium
- Tailgate rule: open flames out before entering, and every setup needs a 2-A:10-B:C fire extinguisher
- Hit the east-side BBQ stand in the first quarter — the brisket sells out fastest at halftime
- Head to the Crown Royal Saloon 20 minutes early if you want live music before kickoff
- METRO Red Line home: Fannin South station, Gate 2 entry, extended service runs after most home games
- Pre-game dining: Kirby Drive (15 min) and the East End (15–20 min) are your best bets — the area immediately around the stadium has no walkable restaurants

Frequently asked questions
Is Reliant Stadium the same as NRG Stadium?
Yes. The stadium opened in 2002 as Reliant Stadium, was renamed NRG Stadium in 2014 when NRG Energy purchased the naming rights, and returned to the Reliant name in August 2026. The building, the team, and the concessions are the same; only the name changed.
What bags are allowed at Reliant Stadium?
One clear plastic bag no larger than 12 × 6 × 12 inches, or a standard one-gallon zip-seal bag, is permitted. You may also carry one small clutch bag measuring no more than 4.5 × 6.5 inches alongside the clear bag. Backpacks and all non-clear bags are turned away at security. Medical items receive an exception after inspection.
Does Reliant Stadium accept cash at concessions?
Most concession stands at Reliant Stadium are cashless. Bring a debit or credit card, or use mobile pay (Apple Pay, Google Pay). There are no ATMs inside the stadium.
Can I bring food into Reliant Stadium?
Outside food and beverages are not permitted. Exceptions are made for medically necessary items and food for young children, each subject to inspection at the security checkpoint.
What is the best way to get to Reliant Stadium without driving?
Take the METRO Red Line to Fannin South station and enter through Gate 2. The ride from downtown Houston takes about 20 minutes. METRO runs extended service after most Houston Texans home games.
When do the gates open before a Texans game at Reliant Stadium?
Gates open two hours before kickoff. Arriving early is the best strategy for beating lines at the east-side BBQ stand and securing a spot at the Bud Light Lounge or Crown Royal Saloon before they fill up.
