- Best Breakfast in Spring Branch, Houston: Tacos, Kolaches, Machacado
The best breakfast in Spring Branch, Houston is Mexican first: breakfast tacos, chilaquiles and machacado along Long Point Road, Clay Road and Hammerly Boulevard, with kolaches, a Korean bakery and two coffee shops filling in the gaps. If you only try one, make it El Hidalguense at 6917 Long Point Rd for breakfast tacos and Hidalgo-style lamb barbacoa, or Shipley Do-Nuts at 8247 Long Point Rd for kolaches from 6 a.m.
Here's the detail most people miss: Spring Branch can serve you a Monterrey breakfast twice over. Tostadería Madero's on Clay Road and Tostada Regia on Long Point Road both cook in the northern Mexican style, and both put machacado, dried shredded beef scrambled with egg, on the breakfast menu. Two machacado kitchens in one neighborhood is a very Spring Branch kind of luck.
How do we define Spring Branch?
For this guide, Spring Branch runs from the north side of the Katy Freeway (I-10) up to US 290 and Hempstead Road, and from Beltway 8 (the Sam Houston Tollway) east to roughly Loop 610. It includes Spring Valley Village and Hilshire Village. Long Point Road is the main street, with Blalock, Gessner, Bingle, Clay and Hammerly crossing it. We left out the Gessner Road taco stops at Memorial City and everything south of I-10; those are in our breakfast in Memorial guide.
How we chose
Every pick serves breakfast and was confirmed open on its own official website in November 2026. We wanted the range Spring Branch actually has: family taquerias, two Monterrey-style kitchens, a 1936 Houston donut-and-kolache brand, a Korean bakery and neighborhood coffee shops. Hours change, so treat each schedule below as typical and check the official site before you go. For a slower weekend meal, see our brunch in Spring Branch guide.
Breakfast tacos and Mexican breakfast plates
El Hidalguense, Long Point Road
6917 Long Point Rd, Houston, TX 77055 · typically Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–9 p.m., Sat–Sun 7 a.m.–10 p.m.
El Hidalguense is a family restaurant that has served Mexican food on Long Point Road since 1994, cooking dishes from the state of Hidalgo. Its Desayunos (breakfast) section lists breakfast tacos with eight fillings, including chorizo, papa (potato), nopales (cactus) and a la ranchera, plus chilaquiles with chicken, beef fajita or barbacoa. Bigger appetites can order huastecas, egg enchiladas in Huasteca sauce with cecina, from the main plates.
Why go: the barbacoa de borrego. El Hidalguense in Spring Branch cooks lamb barbacoa in maguey leaves, Hidalgo style, and serves it with consommé. Menudo is on the menu every day, not just weekends, and you can add handmade tortillas to any order.
Order: two breakfast tacos, one chorizo and one nopales, then a side of lamb barbacoa if you came hungry.
Tostadería Madero's, Clay Road
9401 Clay Rd, Houston, TX 77080 · typically open daily 8 a.m.–10 p.m.
Tostadería Madero's serves Monterrey-style Mexican food on Clay Road in north Spring Branch and advertises breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. The breakfast list is called Great-Fast Tacos: egg a la Mexicana, potato and egg, egg and beans, huevo y arroz, and a long list of meat fillings including barbacoa, chicharrón, machacado, fajita and egg, and carnitas and egg.
Order: a machacado taco, then chilaquiles red or green in a large if you're sharing. Huevos al gusto (eggs your way) come machacado, norteño or a la Mexicana.
Tostada Regia, Long Point Road
10066 Long Point Rd, Houston, TX 77055 · typically Sun–Thu 7 a.m.–10 p.m., Fri–Sat 7 a.m.–11 p.m.
Tostada Regia is a small Houston chain whose name nods to Monterrey (people from Monterrey are called regios), and its Long Point Road location opens at 7 a.m. every day. The breakfast menu goes well past tacos: machacado, Benedictos Regios, migas, huevos rancheros, molletes, a chilaquiles bowl and a steak and egg bowl.
Why go: it's the earliest sit-down Mexican breakfast on this list that opens at the same time every day of the week. Breakfast tacos are the quick order; the Big Joe Burrito is the long one.
Tacos Doña Lena, Hammerly Boulevard
8788 Hammerly Blvd, Houston, TX 77080 · weekend breakfast typically from 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday; weekdays open 11 a.m.
Tacos Doña Lena's story starts in 1985, when Doña Lena began selling tacos in Salamanca, Guanajuato. She kept cooking after moving to the United States, and in 2020 she opened her own restaurant. The Hammerly Boulevard shop in Spring Branch is the original location, and according to the restaurant, it's the only one that serves breakfast.
Order: El Chingón breakfast taco, then chilaquiles or the Desayuno Doña Lena plate. Menudo Pal' Crudo is on the weekend breakfast menu for anyone recovering from Friday night.
Insider tip: breakfast is weekends only here, so a Saturday 8 a.m. visit is the move. More citywide picks are in our best breakfast tacos in Houston guide.
Kolaches and donuts
Shipley Do-Nuts, Long Point Road
8247 Long Point Rd, Houston, TX 77055 · typically Mon–Sat 6 a.m.–noon, Sun 7 a.m.–noon
Shipley Do-Nuts dates to 1936, when Lawrence Shipley Sr. created his original donut recipe, and the first Shipley shop opened in Houston in the mid-1940s. The Long Point Road store sells glazed donuts plus a full kolache case: sausage, egg and cheese; bacon, egg and cheese; sausage, jalapeño and cheese; ham and cheese; and the Shipley Bold sausage kolaches.
Why go: it's the earliest door on Long Point. It also closes at noon, so this is a strictly morning stop. For the bigger picture, see our kolaches and donuts guide.
Order: a sausage, egg, jalapeño and cheese kolache and a classic glazed, eaten in the car.
Bakeries and cafés
TOUS les JOURS, Blalock Road

1444 Blalock Rd, Houston, TX 77055 · typically open daily 7 a.m.–5 p.m. · brunch menu served all day

Insider tip: on Saturdays and Sundays the café adds a waffle menu, including a Chick Chick Waffle and a Matcha & Scoop. There's putt-putt golf for kids, so it's a good pick when the whole family is up early.
