Houston rewards a little planning. It is one of the largest cities in the country by area, its best neighborhoods are spread across miles of freeway, and the experience of a visit depends heavily on where you stay and how you get around. Get those two decisions right and the city opens up: world-class museums within walking distance of each other, a downtown theater district, Gulf Coast seafood, and one of the most varied food scenes in America.

Pick a base, then plan by neighborhood

Most visitors stay downtown, in the Galleria area, near the Texas Medical Center, or close to one of the two airports. Downtown puts you on the METRORail Red Line, near the ballpark, the convention center and the Theater District. The Galleria trades transit for shopping and a large choice of hotels. The Medical Center is the practical pick for hospital visits, and it sits a short ride from the Museum District and Hermann Park. Our where-to-stay guides compare them.

Then plan each day around one or two neighborhoods rather than criss-crossing town. Pair the Museum District with Hermann Park and the zoo, Montrose with the Menil Collection, or the Heights with an afternoon on 19th Street. Our neighborhood guides cover what to see, where to eat and how to get there.

Getting here and getting around

Houston has two commercial airports: George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) to the north and William P. Hobby (HOU) to the southeast. Which one you use changes your drive into town, so check before you book a hotel.

Inside the city, a car is the most flexible option, and several major highways are cashless toll roads, so read our toll roads and EZ TAG guide before you rent. If you are staying near the rail line, METRO is a genuine alternative for downtown, the Museum District, the Medical Center and NRG Park. Our METRO guide explains routes and fares.

When to come

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons. Summers are long, hot and humid, so plan outdoor time for mornings and evenings. Hurricane season runs from June through November. Most visits are unaffected, but it is worth knowing the basics in our hurricane preparation guide.
