Best Patios in Montrose, Houston: 9 Restaurants and Bars Outside

Date Published

Patio restaurants and bars in Montrose illustration: string lights, oak tree, umbrella table and dog

The best patio restaurants and bars in Montrose, Houston, are West Alabama Ice House for a dog-friendly beer yard, Barnaby's Cafe on Fairview for lunch with your dog, and Tonight & Tomorrow at La Colombe d'Or for dinner in a 1920s mansion garden. For drinks with a view, Sophie on Westheimer has an upstairs terrace bar, and Nobie's on Colquitt takes patio reservations. Every pick below sits inside Montrose and was checked as open on its own official website.

Here's a line worth stealing: West Alabama Ice House was built in 1928 on a dirt road on the outskirts of town, according to the icehouse itself. Today that same patch of outskirts is the middle of Montrose, and the icehouse is still pouring.

Where does Montrose start and stop?

For this guide, Montrose is the area bounded by Allen Parkway and Buffalo Bayou to the north, Spur 527 and Bagby Street to the east, US 59 (I-69) to the south, and Shepherd Drive to the west. That is the same boundary we use across our Montrose area guide and sister guides. It includes the Menil campus, Lower Westheimer and the Harlow District on West Dallas Street, and leaves out everything west of Shepherd.

How we chose

We picked places where sitting outside is part of the point, not an afterthought. Each one had to be inside the Montrose boundaries above, show current hours on its own official website when we checked in November 2026, and show a patio, terrace, garden, courtyard or outdoor seating on that site. We call a place dog-friendly only when the venue says so itself. Only two venues on this list publish a dog policy, so only two get the label.

None of these venues publishes details on shade, fans, misters or heaters, so we don't make promises about them. Hours change, so treat every schedule below as "typically" and check the official site before you go.

Dog-friendly patios in Montrose

West Alabama Ice House

1919 W Alabama St · icehouse and backyard · dogs welcome on a leash

West Alabama Ice House is the classic Montrose patio: an open yard with picnic-table energy, cold beer and a food truck on site. The icehouse says it was built in 1928, and the same family has run it since 1985, when a Greek immigrant from the island of Kefalonia bought it.

What to order or do: a cold beer, cider or seltzer from the bar, food from the on-site truck, then a round of ping pong, cornhole, pool or ring on a string.

Dogs: the icehouse's own rule is short: all dogs are welcome but must be leashed.

Good to know: it typically opens at 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday and at noon on Sunday, and stays open until midnight (1 a.m. on Saturdays). Anyone under 21 must be with a parent or guardian, and the icehouse asks them to leave at sundown.

Barnaby's Cafe (the original, on Fairview)

604 Fairview St · neighborhood cafe · dog-friendly patio with a puppy menu

Barnaby's Cafe on Fairview is the original location of a Houston comfort-food cafe, and it treats dogs as regulars. Barnaby's says its patios welcome pets and comply with the dog-on-patio rules in the Texas Health and Safety Code. The puppy menu offers ground beef, sliced chicken breast or scrambled eggs over brown rice, plus doggie ice cream.

What to order: Doctor Gale's meatloaf or the chicken-fried steak for you; a bowl from the puppy menu for the dog.

Patio rules worth knowing: no dogs on tables, chairs or laps, keep the leash within reach, and don't feed them off your plate. Barnaby's has bowls for that. The patio is open weather permitting.

Hours: typically lunch and dinner every day, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Garden and courtyard dining

Tonight & Tomorrow at La Colombe d'Or

3410 Montrose Blvd · French brasserie · dining room that spills into the gardens

Tonight & Tomorrow is the restaurant inside La Colombe d'Or, a hotel in the historic Fondren Mansion. The hotel says the mansion was built in 1923 as a private home for the founder of Humble Oil and became a hotel in 1979. The restaurant fills the renovated mansion dining room and spills out into the gardens, and the hotel grounds include a sculpture garden and a private park.

What to order: a long weekend brunch outside, or dinner with a craft cocktail.

Hours: typically breakfast daily, lunch on weekdays, brunch Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and dinner every night from 5 to 10 p.m. Reservations are taken online.

La Griglia

2817 W Dallas St, Harlow District · Italian · courtyard and patio

La Griglia has been a Houston favorite for more than 30 years, by its own account, and lives in the Harlow District on West Dallas Street. The restaurant describes an expansive courtyard and bar for cocktails and bites. Its FAQ says the patio is available for al fresco dining, weather permitting, and recommends reserving outdoor tables.

What to order: the shrimp and crab "cheesecake" or the mussels, with something from a wine list the restaurant says represents all 20 regions of Italy.

Good to know: La Griglia posts an upscale dress code and offers valet parking. Check both before you go.

Patios for dinner and drinks

Nobie's

2048 Colquitt St · neighborhood restaurant · patio with reservations

Nobie's is named for chef Martin Stayer's grandmother, and it has been awarded a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand, in 2024 and 2025 according to the restaurant. Inside, Nobie's spins vinyl all day and likes it, in its own words, loud and dark. The restaurant's own advice: if you're sensitive to loud music, sit on the patio. It takes reservations by phone for indoor and outdoor tables.

What to order: whatever is on the short daily supper menu, which runs to 20 to 25 items, then a slice of pie. The pies, from key lime to black bottom caramel, come with vanilla bean whipped cream.

Hours: typically 5 to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Sophie

910 Westheimer Rd · cocktail bar · upstairs Terrace Bar

Sophie is two bars in one: a moody cocktail bar downstairs and a Terrace Bar upstairs with views of Houston.

What to order: the Mademoiselle Sophie, the house signature cocktail, or the Dirty Caviar Martini if it's that kind of night.

Good to know: happy hour typically runs weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m., and Sunday brunch from noon to 4 p.m. Sophie adds a 20% service charge to all checks.

Bludorn

807 Taft St · New American, French-inspired · string-lit patio

Bludorn opened in Montrose in August 2020, when chef Aaron Bludorn, formerly executive chef at Café Boulud, came back to Houston. Its own site shows an outdoor patio set with string lights and white tablecloths, so ask for an outside table when you book.

What to order: the seasonal menu changes, but Sunday brunch from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. is the easiest way in. Dinner typically runs nightly from 5 p.m.

Parking: valet out front on Taft Street, plus a self-park lot in back off Rhode Place.

Casual patios: barbecue and coffee

The Pit Room and The Patio

1201 and 1205 Richmond Ave · Texas barbecue and a bar next door

The Pit Room is a Texas barbecue joint, and its next-door bar, The Patio, is, in the restaurant's words, attached at the hip. Grab barbecue, carry it over to The Patio, and in season add crawfish. The Pit Room says all its beef is USDA Prime and its pork is heritage Berkshire-Duroc, smoked on two custom barrel-style offset smokers.

What to order: breakfast tacos in the morning (typically 7 to 10:30 a.m.), then sliced brisket from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Good to know: The Patio typically stays open until 11 p.m., later on weekends, with weekday happy hour from 2 to 7 p.m. Its posted hours vary between pages, so check before a late visit. More smoke nearby is in our Montrose barbecue guide.

Siphon Coffee

701 W Alabama St · coffee, brunch, beer and wine · outdoor tables

Siphon Coffee on West Alabama Street is a coffee shop, kitchen and wine bar in one. Its own site shows outdoor seating under an umbrella among trees, which makes it a good first stop on a Montrose patio day.

What to order: a nitro cold brew or London Fog, with chilaquiles or avocado toast. Siphon also pours beer and wine.

Hours: typically 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. More caffeine in our Montrose coffee shop guide.

Which Montrose patios have shade?

No venue on this list publishes details about shade, fans or misters, so plan around the sun yourself. Siphon Coffee's own photos show umbrella-shaded tables among trees. La Colombe d'Or's gardens and La Griglia's courtyard are the most sheltered settings, while an icehouse yard is about as exposed as it gets. In Houston's warm months, evenings and mornings are the comfortable patio hours. Call ahead and ask for a shaded or covered table if it matters.

Before you go: a Montrose patio checklist

  • Check hours on the venue's own site the day you go.
  • Reserve outdoor tables where offered: Nobie's and La Griglia both take patio reservations.
  • Bringing a dog? Stick to West Alabama Ice House and Barnaby's, which publish dog policies, and bring water.
  • Bringing someone under 21 to the icehouse? They need a parent or guardian and should leave at sundown.
  • Check dress codes (La Griglia) and service charges (Sophie) before you sit down.
  • Patios close in bad weather. Have an indoor backup.
