- Best Coffee Shops in Montrose: Roasters, Laptop Cafes, Drive-Thrus
Montrose runs on coffee from first light to last call. You can order an espresso at a drive-thru window before 5:30 on a weekday morning and another on a Westheimer patio after midnight, and in between there's a cafe for every kind of day: a laptop morning, a slow brunch, a pastry on the way to the Menil.
This is our shortlist of the coffee shops Montrose locals actually use, sorted by what you need from them. Every pick was checked as operating on its own official website in October 2026.
The one-line version
Montrose is the rare Houston neighborhood where you can drink coffee for 21 hours straight without leaving the neighborhood.
How we define Montrose
Neighborhood lines in Houston are argued about, so here are ours. For this guide, Montrose runs from Allen Parkway in the north to US 59 in the south, and from Shepherd Drive in the west to Spur 527 and Bagby Street in the east. That takes in lower Westheimer, the Menil campus, the blocks around West Alabama and Dunlavy, and the stretch of West Clay near Waugh. Anything outside those lines, however close, didn't make this list. For the wider neighborhood, start with our Montrose area page.
How we chose
We looked for coffee shops with a reason to choose them over the one nearest your house: serious espresso, a room you can work in, hours that match your life, or a drive-thru when you can't park. Each pick had to show a current Montrose address on its official site or official store locator. We left out several well-known names whose websites have gone dark or now point somewhere else, rather than guess whether they're open.
Hours below come from each shop's own site and change often, so treat them as "typically" and check before you go.
The quick list
- For a serious specialty coffee: Fix Coffeebar or Siphon Coffee.
- For a full workday on a laptop: Pavón Coffee Den.
- For coffee after 10 p.m.: Agora or Pavón.
- For coffee plus a real meal: Empire Cafe, Common Bond or Brasil.
- For coffee plus groceries: Mercantile Montrose.
- For the earliest cup: the Dunkin' drive-thru on South Shepherd.
- For a drive-thru with a patio: Starbucks at Richmond and Woodhead.
Specialty coffee and independent roasters
Fix Coffeebar
Lower Westheimer · specialty coffee bar · check its site for hours
Fix calls itself an established specialty coffee shop, and it serves locally roasted coffee. The house specialty is the seasonal latte. Fix says it originated two drinks you'll want to try at least once: the Honey Lavender Latte and the Smoked Rosemary Cortado. There's nitro cold brew, tea, kolaches, oatmeal and pastries if you need something to eat.
Insider tip: Fix sits on METRO's 82 bus route, the line that runs along Westheimer, so it's an easy car-free stop.
Best for: coffee people who want something they can't get at home.
Siphon Coffee
701 W Alabama St · coffeehouse with full kitchen · typically 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Mon–Sat, 7 a.m.–5 p.m. Sun
Siphon calls itself "a coffeehouse built for more," and it is: specialty espresso and drip coffee plus scratch-made food, wine, and craft and national beers. Breakfast runs to chilaquiles, breakfast sandwiches and tacos; later in the day there's a signature burger, a fried chicken sandwich and a basket of Hangover Fries.
Best for: a long breakfast meeting that turns into lunch.
Mercantile Montrose
3321 Stanford Ave · espresso bar and specialty grocery · typically 7 a.m.–9 p.m. daily
Mercantile opened on March 29, 2014, and describes itself as part espresso bar, part specialty grocery and part artistic expression. Order your cortado, then browse shelves of hard-to-find coffee, pantry goods and gifts like cookbooks and coffee makers.
Insider tip: if you need a last-minute host gift, this is where coffee people shop for coffee people.
Best for: a coffee run that doubles as an errand.
Work-friendly cafes
Pavón Coffee Den
1216 W Clay St, Suite 300 · large cafe · typically 7 a.m.–midnight daily
Pavón is built for staying. The cafe is 2,400 square feet with seating for solo work, small groups and remote workers, plus high-speed Wi-Fi once you've ordered at the bar. It's open until midnight every day, which makes it one of the few places in Montrose where you can study late without a cocktail menu.
Insider tip: parking is free. Pavón says to pull into the Harlow District lot, drive past the valet booth and turn right; about 40 spots on your left, in the central two rows, are free for customers, and they're easiest to find before the lunch rush.
House rules: order before you use the Wi-Fi, and no outside food or drinks.
Best for: the full workday, or the all-nighter before a deadline.
Agora
1712 Westheimer Rd · Greek-style cafe and bar · typically 9 a.m.–2 a.m. daily
Agora opened on October 26, 2001, and its name is the Greek word for an open gathering space. It has been Montrose's late-night living room ever since. It has Wi-Fi, and it's open until 2 a.m. every day of the week.
What to order: go Greek. The menu includes a Greek iced coffee, a freddo espresso, a freddo cappuccino and a frappe, alongside the usual espresso drinks. Pair one with walnut, pistachio or chocolate baklava. After dark, it pours beer and wine too.
House rules: order at the bar to hold a table, and no outside food or drinks.
Best for: a late study session or a first date that doesn't want to end.
All-day cafes with a real menu
Empire Cafe
1732 Westheimer Rd · cafe and restaurant · typically 7:30 a.m.–10 p.m., until 11 p.m. Fri–Sat
Empire sits on the curve of Westheimer between Montrose and Shepherd, and its phone number spells it out: 713-528-JAVA. It pours custom-roasted coffee and espresso alongside a full menu that runs from the signature Italian Toast at breakfast to paninis at lunch and chicken parmesan at dinner. You order at the counter, and staff keep looking after you from there.
Insider tip: go on a Monday. Empire's homemade cakes are half price every Monday, which is the best excuse to order dessert with your cappuccino.
Best for: people-watching from the patio with a slice of cake.
Common Bond Bistro & Bakery (Montrose)
1706 Westheimer Rd · bistro and bakery · check its site for hours
This is the original. Common Bond opened its first Bistro & Bakery here in May 2014, and the Montrose location is still where you'll find the full bakery case and a sit-down bistro menu. Get a coffee and a pastry, or stay for a meal. Our best bakeries in Houston guide has more if you're on a pastry crawl.
Best for: coffee with a croissant you'll think about later.
Brasil
2604 Dunlavy St · cafe, kitchen and bar · breakfast weekdays, brunch weekends
Brasil is a neighborhood cafe that runs from morning coffee to evening wine. Breakfast is typically served 8 to 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and brunch from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends. From 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays there's a happy hour with half-price wine by the glass, and on Tuesdays bottles of wine are half off all day.
Best for: a coffee date that might turn into a glass of wine. More weekend ideas are in our best brunch in Houston guide.
La La Land Kind Cafe (Montrose)
888 Westheimer Rd, Suite 106 · cafe · typically 6:30 a.m.–7 p.m. daily
La La Land describes itself as a cafe committed to spreading kindness, and it's built for the order-ahead crowd: use the app, skip the line and grab your drink on the way to work. It opens at 6:30 every morning, earlier than most sit-down cafes in the neighborhood. The chain also has a second Montrose-adjacent cafe at 3502 S Shepherd Dr.
Best for: an early start with a pretty drink in hand.
Drive-throughs
Montrose is a walking neighborhood, but sometimes you need coffee without finding a parking spot. These two have drive-thru windows listed on their official store pages.
Dunkin' (South Shepherd)
2330 S Shepherd Dr · drive-thru · typically 5 a.m.–8:45 p.m. weekdays, 6 a.m.–8:45 p.m. weekends
The earliest cup in this guide. The Shepherd Drive Dunkin' opens at 5 a.m. on weekdays, and it has a drive-thru, walk-in counter, dine-in seating and Wi-Fi.

Save this: a Montrose coffee morning
- 8 a.m.: Start at Fix Coffeebar on lower Westheimer and order the Smoked Rosemary Cortado.
- 9 a.m.: Walk or ride west on Westheimer to Common Bond for a pastry, or to Empire if it's a Monday and the cake is half price.
- 11 a.m.: Finish your coffee, then head to the Menil Collection, which is always free and typically open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Food and drinks aren't allowed in the museum buildings, so drink up outside. Plan the visit on the Menil's official site.
- Lunch: Siphon on West Alabama for chilaquiles, or pick from our best restaurants in Montrose.
- Late: If the day turns into a night of work, end at Pavón or Agora, both open well past 10 p.m.
Before you go: a quick checklist
- Check hours on the shop's own site the day you go; several close earlier on Sundays.
- Plan to buy something before you open your laptop. Pavón and Agora both ask that you order before you settle in, and neither allows outside food or drinks.
- Parking on lower Westheimer is tight. Use Pavón's free lot, METRO's 82 bus, or one of the drive-thrus.
- Monday is cake day at Empire.
