Date Night in Montrose: 14 Spots for Dinner, Drinks and a Walk

Date Published

Date night Montrose illustration: candlelit table for two, wine glasses and a couple under live oaks

Montrose is one of the easiest places in Houston to plan a date night on foot. Dinner, a nightcap and a scoop of gelato can all sit within a few blocks of Westheimer, and on the north side of the neighborhood you'll find our favorite pre-dinner walk in the city: 30 acres of live oaks, outdoor sculpture and art buildings around the Menil Collection, all free.

This is our shortlist for a date night in Montrose: nine restaurants for the main event, then five places for the drink, the walk or the dessert that makes it a night instead of a meal.

Where Montrose starts and stops

Ask five Houstonians where Montrose ends and you'll get five answers. For this guide we use a practical definition: Allen Parkway and Buffalo Bayou on the north, Shepherd Drive on the west, the Southwest Freeway (US 59) on the south, and the Spur 527 / Bagby side of Midtown on the east. Everything below sits inside those lines. For the wider neighborhood picture, start with our Montrose area guide.

The quick list

  • For the big anniversary: March, a reservations-only Mediterranean tasting menu.
  • For old-school romance: Sorrento, with a piano at the bar and candlelit tables.
  • For dressing up: Da Marco, where the dress code is "jacket preferred."
  • For sushi and sake: Uchi or Katami.
  • For a relaxed but special dinner: Rosie Cannonball or Bludorn.
  • For dinner, then art: The Perseid, a short walk from the Menil campus.
  • For the nightcap: Anvil Bar & Refuge or the terrace at Sophie.
  • For dessert: milk + sugar or SweetCup Gelato.

How we chose

We picked places where a table for two feels like an occasion: good lighting, a room you'll remember, and food worth talking about on the walk back to the car. Every pick had to be inside our Montrose boundaries and show a current address and menu or hours on its own official website when we checked in October 2026. We left out spots we couldn't confirm on an official site, and we kept the list to restaurants, bars, dessert shops and public art spaces.

Hours and prices change. Treat every schedule below as "typically," and check the venue's site, especially for Monday plans, when several of these are closed.

Dinner: the main event

1. March

1624 Westheimer Rd · Mediterranean tasting menu · typically Tuesday to Saturday, reservations only

March is the special-occasion move. The restaurant builds its menu in seasons, each one exploring a different corner of the Mediterranean through its food, history and culture, so the meal you have is never quite the one your friends had last year. Even the name is a clue: a "march" is a borderland between territories, and the kitchen says those edges are what it cooks about.

Insider tip: March also has a lounge, typically open later than the dining room on Tuesday to Saturday evenings. If you can't get a dinner booking, check whether a lounge visit fits your night. Reserve on March's site.

2. Sorrento Ristorante

415 Westheimer Rd · Italian · piano bar

If your idea of romance comes with a white tablecloth and a candle, this is your table. Sorrento sits between Montrose and Taft, and you walk in to a rounded bar with a piano. The dining room is dark and candlelit, with a large mural and, according to the restaurant, paintings by Picasso and Chagall on the walls. Yes, you can have dinner within sight of a Chagall on Westheimer.

Best for: anniversaries and proposals. Sorrento also runs occasional wine dinners, listed on its website.

3. Da Marco

1520 Westheimer Rd · refined Italian · jacket preferred

Da Marco has served Italian cooking from Chef Marco Wiles since 2000, with a serious wine cellar to match. The menu asks for "jacket preferred" attire, so this is the night to wear the jacket. Order the raviolo with ricotta, egg and Reggiano, and if you're celebrating with a bigger appetite, the menu lists a Florentine-style porterhouse for two to four. See the menu.

4. Uchi

904 Westheimer Rd · modern Japanese · open nightly from 4 p.m.

Uchi means "home" in Japanese, and the Houston restaurant lives in a historic building whose arched window openings were kept in the redesign. The menu is nontraditional Japanese from James Beard Award-winning chef Tyson Cole, built around tastings and seasonal omakase.

Insider tip: happy hour typically runs 4 to 6 p.m. daily, which makes an early date surprisingly affordable. For the full splurge, ask about Oheya, a chef-curated menu served at a 12-seat bar inside the restaurant. Valet is complimentary. More in our best sushi in Houston guide.

5. Katami

2701 W Dallas St · sushi, wagyu and sake · dinner nightly

Katami comes from chef Manabu Horiuchi, who opened sister restaurant Kata Robata in 2009. The focus is right there in the description: sushi, wagyu and sake. Dinner is typically served from 5 p.m. every night, with later closing on Friday and Saturday, and there's an omakase option if you want to hand the night over to the kitchen. Reservations are on Resy, and walk-ins are welcome. Check hours.

6. Rosie Cannonball

1620 Westheimer Rd · wood-fired European · typically Tuesday to Sunday, 5 to 10:30 p.m.

Rosie Cannonball is the date night for people who'd rather share a pizza than sit through six courses. The menu centers on a wood-burning oven and grill: pastas, pizzas, simple seafood and meat cooked over live fire. Master Sommelier June Rodil curates the wine list, with a strong Italian, Spanish and French focus.

Insider tip: Rosie runs a late happy hour, typically 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday. Go to a show, then come back for a glass and a pizza. It sits next door to March.

7. Bludorn

807 Taft St · New American with a French accent · dinner nightly

Chef Aaron Bludorn's restaurant leans on the Gulf, with seasonally rotating, French-inspired dishes, global wines and handcrafted cocktails. Dinner typically runs 5 to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. There's valet on Taft Street and a self-park lot behind the restaurant, which matters more than you'd think on a Montrose Friday. Save room: Bludorn publishes a separate dessert menu. Reserve here.

8. The Perseid

4110 Loretto Dr, inside Hotel Saint Augustine · French bistro with a Texas spirit · dinner daily

The Perseid is the second Bludorn-led restaurant on this list, a French-inspired bistro inside Hotel Saint Augustine. Its location is the real date-night advantage: it's tucked into the residential streets around the Menil campus, so you can walk the green spaces before dinner, then finish with a cocktail in the hotel's Augustine Lounge. Dinner is typically served from 5 to 10 p.m. daily. See the Perseid page.

9. Cuchara

214 Fairview St · Mexico City-style bistro · closed Mondays

Cuchara brings Mexico City cooking, cocktails and art to a corner of Fairview, and it's the most relaxed dinner on this list. It typically stays open until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, so it works for a late date too. Weekend brunch makes it a good second-date option. For more Montrose dinner ideas, see our best restaurants in Montrose guide.

After dinner: a drink, a walk, a scoop

10. Anvil Bar & Refuge

1424 Westheimer Rd · cocktail bar · typically open daily, 2 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Anvil is the Montrose nightcap. Beyond its seasonal cocktails, the bar keeps a list of 100 classic cocktails, which makes for a perfect date game: pick a number, order it, and see who chose better. There's bar food, beer and wine too. More options are in our best cocktail bars in Houston guide.

11. Sophie

910 Westheimer Rd · cocktail bar and terrace · typically open daily until 2 a.m.

Sophie has two moods. The Terrace Bar upstairs has views of Houston and a livelier crowd; Downstairs at Sophie is the cozy room the bar itself pitches for a tete-a-tete. Pick the one that fits your night. Sophie is a few doors from Uchi, which makes them an easy pair. See our rooftop bars guide for more skyline drinks.

12. The Menil campus and Rothko Chapel

Menil Collection, 1533 Sul Ross St · free · green spaces open daily, dawn to dusk

This is the walk. The Menil's green spaces stretch across a 30-acre neighborhood campus, with landscaped paths under live oaks and outdoor sculpture by artists including Michael Heizer, Ellsworth Kelly and Mark di Suvero. The museum itself is always free and typically open Wednesday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

I didn't know that: the Dan Flavin installation at Richmond Hall (1500 Richmond Ave) includes green fluorescent lights along the building's exterior rooflines, part of Flavin's last design, completed in 1996 shortly before his death. And the Cy Twombly Gallery, also free, is lit by sunlight filtered through linen sailcloth.

Timing tip: do the walk before dinner. The grounds close at dusk, and the Rothko Chapel, just across Sul Ross, is typically open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closes for occasional events, so check its visit page first.

13. milk + sugar

1848 Westheimer Rd · ice cream · typically open until midnight Friday and Saturday

milk + sugar churns its mix-ins into the ice cream in-house, think brownie chunks, pieces of cake and seasonal flavors. Its site sums up the attitude: life is too short for plain vanilla. On Friday and Saturday the Montrose shop typically stays open until midnight, which makes it the latest-night dessert on this list.

14. SweetCup Gelato & Sorbet

3939 Montrose Blvd · gelato and sorbet · closed Mondays

SweetCup started in Montrose in 2012 and still makes seasonal gelato and sorbet from local ingredients. It typically opens at noon Tuesday to Sunday and closes around 9:30 to 10 p.m., so plan it as the last stop of an earlier evening. More scoops are in our best ice cream in Houston guide.

Save this: three Montrose date nights

The art date (Wednesday to Sunday)

  1. Late afternoon at the Menil: the main building, then the Cy Twombly Gallery.
  2. Walk the green spaces as the light goes gold, and look up at Richmond Hall's rooflines.
  3. Dinner at The Perseid, then a drink in the Augustine Lounge.

The Westheimer stroll (Tuesday to Saturday)

  1. Dinner at March or Rosie Cannonball, side by side at 1620 and 1624 Westheimer.
  2. Walk east to Anvil and pick a number off the 100 classics.
  3. Finish with a scoop at milk + sugar if it's a Friday or Saturday.

The big night (any night but Monday)

  1. Happy hour at Uchi from 4 p.m.
  2. Dinner at Sorrento or Da Marco (dress up for Da Marco).
  3. Nightcap on the terrace at Sophie.

Before you go: a quick checklist

  • Book ahead for March, Da Marco, Sorrento, Uchi, Katami and Bludorn, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Avoid Mondays: March, Sorrento, Rosie Cannonball, Cuchara, SweetCup, the Menil and the Rothko Chapel are typically closed.
  • Plan for parking. Bludorn has valet and a back lot; Uchi has complimentary valet; the Menil has free lots at 1515 West Alabama and next to Richmond Hall.
  • Do the Menil walk before dark. The green spaces close at dusk.
  • Drinking? Use a rideshare. Westheimer gets busy late on weekends.
