Here’s the detail that tells you what kind of patio town this is: Schafer’s dress code has a line for guests who arrive by boat. Come off the water in swimwear and you’ll be asked to put on a modest cover-up before you walk in. In Clear Lake, some people really do come to dinner by boat.

How do we define Clear Lake?
For this guide, Clear Lake means the communities around the lake itself: Houston’s Clear Lake neighborhood around NASA and Bay Area Boulevard, plus Webster, Nassau Bay, El Lago, Taylor Lake Village, Seabrook and Clear Lake Shores. It’s the same footprint as our Clear Lake area guide. Kemah and League City share the shoreline, but they get their own guides, so we left out their patios even when they sit a block over the line.
How we chose
Every pick had to be operating on its own official website when we last verified this guide, with a current address and posted hours, and the restaurant’s own site had to show outdoor seating, in its text or its own photo gallery. We favored patios with water views, real shade or something to do, and we noted cover and fire pits only where the venue itself shows them.
On dogs, we were strict. Only Galveston Bay Brewing says on its own site that its patio is pet-friendly. The other venues don’t publish a pet policy online, so call ahead before you bring a dog. Hours and specials change, so read every schedule below as “typically” and check the official site before you go.
Clear Lake Shores: the marina patios
Clear Lake Shores calls itself the Yachting Capital of Texas. According to the city, it was sold in the 1920s as waterfront retreat lots around the Clear Lake estuary, incorporated on December 13, 1962, and counted 1,197 residents in the 2020 census. Five of our picks sit here, close enough together to plan an evening around.
Galveston Bay Brewing
Clear Lake Shores, 902 Marina Bay Dr · brewery patio and pier · dog-friendly patio · open daily
Galveston Bay Brewing describes itself as an independent craft brewery with a family-friendly taproom and a pet-friendly patio, and its site features the “Patio and Pier” as its outdoor space, with a covered patio and wooden benches in its own photos. More than 30 local craft brews and seltzers are on tap, including its Sour Sirens series, and the full kitchen means you can stay for dinner.
When to go: the brewery typically opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays and serves brunch from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Check the brewery’s site for current hours.
Best for: an afternoon with the dog. For more pup-friendly spots across town, see our dog-friendly patios in Houston.
Schafer’s Coastal Bar & Grille
Clear Lake Shores, 1002 Aspen Rd · waterfront patio · typically closed Mondays
Schafer’s calls itself a family-owned restaurant and bar on the water and a “proud cousin” of Outriggers Seafood Grill & Bar, which spent 18 years under the Kemah-Seabrook bridge until the Highway 146 bridge expansion closed it. Its own gallery shows guests on the patio, a waterfront view, docked boats outside and an upstairs bar.
What to order: something from the happy hour list, typically 3 to 6 p.m., such as the Spicy Cucumber Martini, then blackened redfish or the Schafer Burger as the sun goes down. The dress code is upscale casual: shorts are fine, backwards ballcaps aren’t.
Best for: sunset and date night. More water-view tables are in our best waterfront restaurants in Houston.
Lil’ Outriggers Hula Bar & Grill
Clear Lake Shores, 822 Clear Lake Rd · tropical patio and deck · typically Tuesday to Sunday
Lil’ Outriggers sits across the street from Schafer’s and keeps the other half of the Outriggers story alive, with the famous fish tacos brought back from the original restaurant. Its site invites you to settle in under the stars on the patio while live music plays.
Good to know: it’s 21 and up after 8 p.m. Weekday hours typically start at 5 p.m., and Friday through Sunday at noon.
Best for: fish tacos and a tropical drink in flip-flops.
Okie’s Yardhouse
Clear Lake Shores, 1010 Marina Bay Dr · outdoor courtyard with fire pits · open daily, late
Okie’s Yardhouse splits into three spaces: a main bar, a Party Pavilion with 18 big screens, and an outdoor courtyard with fire pits and live entertainment. That makes it the best cool-night patio on this list. The bar typically stays open until 1 or 2 a.m., with 14 seasonal draft taps.
Families: Okie’s is family-friendly until 9 p.m. and 21 and up after 10 p.m.
Best for: game day outdoors, then the fire pits after dark.
Opus Ocean Grille
Clear Lake Shores, 1510 Marina Bay Dr, Building 124 · marina-side tables · open daily
Opus Ocean Grille sits inside the Watergate Yachting Center, right on the marina, and its own gallery shows tables and chairs outside the restaurant. The menu is the most polished on the strip: oysters on the half shell, Alaskan king crab and Chilean sea bass, with weekend brunch typically from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The fun detail: the wine list at Opus tops out with a bottle of Opus One. Reservations are recommended.
Best for: a special-occasion seafood dinner. Ask for an outside table when you book, since the site doesn’t promise one.
Webster: Bay Area Boulevard and the Gulf Freeway
BB’s Tex-Orleans
Webster, 1039 W Bay Area Blvd · large covered outdoor seating · open daily
If shade is the whole point, start here. BB’s Tex-Orleans in Webster says it has a large, covered outdoor seating area, and it’s typically open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. The big-table order is the 5 Pound Mound of crawfish, and weekday happy hour typically runs from 3 to 6 p.m.
Insider tip: BB’s says it closes only three times a year: Thanksgiving Day for dine-in, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Kids eat free on Tuesdays.
Best for: a family lunch outside in August without wilting.
Little Woodrow’s Webster
Webster, 20251 Gulf Fwy, Suite H · backyard patio bar · open until 2 a.m.
Little Woodrow’s calls itself “your local backyard bar,” and the Webster location lists a patio bar, outdoor furniture, yard games and 30 to 50 TVs. Its site sums up the mood as a beer in a lawn chair. Weekday happy hour typically runs from 2 to 7 p.m.
Good to know: it’s strictly 21 and up after 7 p.m. Before then, anyone under 21 must be with a parent or guardian.
Best for: a casual game day outside. More options are in our best bars in Clear Lake.
First Watch Clear Lake
Webster, 557 W Bay Area Blvd · outdoor patio · daily, typically 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
First Watch Clear Lake is the morning pick. The restaurant says it has an outdoor patio, and it serves alcohol at this location, so a brunch cocktail outdoors is an option. Its most popular dishes are the Tri-fecta, The Traditional and the A.M. Superfoods Bowl. Join the online waitlist before you leave the house.
Best for: a cool-morning breakfast outside. More weekend options are in our best brunch in Clear Lake.
Seabrook
Merlion Thai Restaurant & Lounge
Seabrook, 1205 Main St · patio and lounge · late bar on weekends
Merlion Thai Restaurant & Lounge has the best comeback story on this list. The restaurant says Hurricane Ike washed it away on September 11, 2008, leaving nothing but its sign behind, and that it reopened in February 2009 two streets over from the original spot. Its Thai cooking leans on fresh local seafood.
Insider tip: happy hour is for the bar and patio only, typically 5 to 7 p.m., with half-price appetizers. The main dining rooms have a dress code (no hats, cutoffs or tank tops), so the patio is the relaxed seat. On Fridays and Saturdays the bar typically stays open until midnight or 2 a.m.
Best for: a spicy seafood dinner outdoors. Seabrook also has more than 50 painted fiberglass pelicans on its Pelican Path public art trail, according to Visit Seabrook, and one stands at the Bay Area Veterans Memorial on the same street.
