- Best Waterfront Restaurants in Houston: Bayou, Lake, and Gulf
The Houston area has more waterfront dining than most visitors expect. You can sit on a deck over Buffalo Bayou eight minutes from downtown, pull your boat up to a dock on Lake Conroe, eat Gulf seafood at a Galveston institution that has been open since 1911, or work your way along the Kemah Boardwalk in an evening. This guide covers eight verified open restaurants across four bodies of water, with drive times from downtown Houston and boat-up access noted for each.
The quick list
- Closest to downtown — bayou deck: Brenner’s on the Bayou, River Oaks
- Best glass-enclosed bayou views: Flora, Buffalo Bayou Park
- Classic seafood with boat-up access: Landry’s Seafood House, Kemah
- Most theatrical — 50,000-gallon shark tank: The Aquarium Restaurant, Kemah
- Texas steakhouse on the boardwalk: Saltgrass Steak House, Kemah
- Boat-up dining on Lake Conroe: Conroe Lake House, Montgomery
- Gulf Coast institution since 1911: Gaido’s Seafood, Galveston
- Beachfront multi-venue complex: The Spot, Galveston
On the bayou: eight minutes from downtown
Brenner’s on the Bayou
River Oaks edge · 1 Birdsall St, Houston, TX 77007 · about 10 minutes from downtown
Brenner’s is Houston’s closest waterfront steakhouse with genuine bayou views. The restaurant occupies acreage along Buffalo Bayou in River Oaks, with the Blue Bar built on a deck directly over the water and a fire-pit terrace above it. Order the prime rib or the New York strip. Sit outside when weather allows — the bayou at night, lit by dock torches and bar light reflecting off the water, is the reason to come here over any downtown rooftop.
Smart-casual or dressy attire is suggested. Reservations are expected, especially on weekends.
Boat-up access: No — Buffalo Bayou is too shallow for motorboats at this stretch.
Best for: special occasions, corporate dinners, anyone who wants white-tablecloth service with actual water outside the window.
Flora
Buffalo Bayou Park · 3422 Allen Pkwy, Houston, TX 77019 · about 8 minutes from downtown
Flora (formerly The Dunlavy) occupies one of the best buildings in Houston: a glass-and-steel pavilion inside Buffalo Bayou Park with floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides and 40 suspended chandeliers overhead. The kitchen is Mexican — shareable small plates, a focused agave cocktail program, and weekend brunch that fills by Thursday. The bayou view from the patio is why people return.
Park along Allen Parkway or walk in from the bayou trail.
Boat-up access: No — park setting, no dock.
Best for: weekend brunch, a date dinner while the light is on the water, or any occasion where the building matters as much as the food.
Kemah: three restaurants, one marina
Kemah sits about 34 miles southeast of downtown Houston on Galveston Bay — typically 40 minutes via I-45 South and NASA Road 1. Three restaurants on the boardwalk are worth the trip for different reasons, and all three share access to Kemah Boardwalk Marina, which has slips for vessels up to 115 feet.
See the Kemah Boardwalk guide for the full attraction breakdown: rides, parking, and what to do beyond dinner.
Boat-up: Contact Kemah Boardwalk Marina at 215 Kipp Ave before you arrive to arrange a slip. Marina staff can also coordinate restaurant reservations from the dock.
Landry’s Seafood House
1 Kemah Boardwalk, Kemah, TX 77565
Landry’s is the go-to for a full Gulf seafood dinner at Kemah. The deck faces Galveston Bay directly. Order the fire roasted oysters or the blackened mahi mahi; the maple-bourbon glazed salmon is the sleeper pick on the menu. Hours typically run Sunday–Wednesday 11 am–9 pm, Thursday 11 am–9:30 pm, Friday–Saturday 11 am–10 pm — check the official site before you go.
The Aquarium Restaurant
11 Kemah Boardwalk, Kemah, TX 77565
The Aquarium wraps its dining room around a 50,000-gallon tank stocked with sharks, stingrays, and reef fish. The food is standard boardwalk seafood; the theater is the reason to come, especially for a table right against the glass. Book ahead on weekends. Hours typically Monday–Thursday noon–8 pm, Friday–Sunday 11 am–9 pm; check aquariumrestaurants.com before your visit.
Saltgrass Steak House
215 Kipp Ave, Kemah, TX 77565
If your group has steak eaters, Saltgrass is the answer for Kemah. Ribeyes, chicken-fried steak, and hand-cut prime beef on a boardwalk patio facing Galveston Bay. Saturday and Sunday brunch begins at 8:30 am — the earliest start on the boardwalk, and useful if you’re arriving by boat in the morning.
Lake Conroe: boat-up dining, 55 minutes north
Conroe Lake House
14954 TX-105 W, Montgomery, TX 77356 · about 55 minutes from downtown via I-45 N
Conroe Lake House is the most practical place to eat on Lake Conroe when you arrive by water: a private dock with slips, a large patio directly on the lake, a kids’ playground and dog park on the grounds, and fire pits for the evening. The menu stays casual — fried shrimp baskets, brisket pizza, wings — which makes it a good call for families or groups who want a full afternoon on the lake rather than just a quick lunch. Weekend crowds can make this place lively by mid-afternoon; check their website for entertainment schedules.
Boat-up note: the dock is on the south shore off TX-105. Call ahead on busy summer weekends to confirm slip availability.
Best for: an entire afternoon — arrive by boat or car, eat lunch on the patio, stay for sunset and live music.
Galveston: Gulf-front classics
Galveston is about 50 miles south of downtown Houston via I-45 — plan roughly 60 minutes each way. Both restaurants sit on Seawall Boulevard facing the Gulf of Mexico. Neither has boat docks (the open Gulf isn’t dockable), but the water view is immediate.

Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant
3828 Seawall Blvd, Galveston, TX 77550
Gaido’s has been on this stretch of Seawall since 1911, which makes it one of the oldest continuously operating seafood restaurants on the Gulf Coast. This is the restaurant that a Houstonian’s grandparents almost certainly ate at — and where locals still take out-of-town guests who ask for something with history. The fried shrimp platter, fresh crab dishes, and pecan pie are what people order. The Gaido family has owned and operated it since S.G. Gaido first opened the doors.
I didn’t know that: Gaido’s opened the same decade that Galveston was rebuilding from the 1900 Storm. The original restaurant pre-dates every major Houston sports stadium, the Ship Channel, and the Texas Medical Center.
Hours typically Sunday–Thursday 11 am–9 pm, Friday–Saturday 11 am–10 pm; check gaidos.com before your trip.
The Spot
3204 Seawall Blvd, Galveston, TX 77550
The Spot is five venues stacked on one beachfront property: the Tiki Bar on top (best Gulf views in both directions), the main restaurant, the RumShack, the SideYard outdoor bar, and Squeeze. Come for the hand-smashed burgers, Gulf shrimp breaded to order, and hand-spun milkshakes. Arrive before sunset and claim a top-level seat. Hours typically Sunday–Thursday 11 am–10 pm, Friday–Saturday 11 am–11 pm. No reservations; expect a wait on summer weekends.
Best for: groups, casual beach meals, a long afternoon that turns into evening.
How we chose
Every restaurant on this list was confirmed as currently open via its official website as of October 2026. We required each spot to sit directly on a named body of water — not across a street from water, not in a marina complex. Boat-up access is noted only where a marina or dock is explicitly confirmed on the official site or a marina directory. Drive times are from Downtown Houston via I-45 or Allen Parkway and vary with traffic.
We did not include Flying Dutchman at Kemah (permanently closed December 31, 2024, after nearly 50 years) or any restaurant we could not verify as currently operating.
