Best Mexican Restaurants in Clear Lake: Tex-Mex, Tacos and Pan Dulce

Date Published

Illustration of a margarita, fajita skillet and sailboat for Mexican restaurants Clear Lake guide

Clear Lake eats Tex-Mex the way it does everything else: in big family booths, ten minutes from NASA, with a margarita waiting for whoever just got off shift. The local Mexican scene is short on hype and long on regulars, from fajita institutions on the Gulf Freeway to a panadería that opens at 6 a.m. and a taqueria on, yes, Saturn Lane.

This is our shortlist of the best Mexican restaurants in Clear Lake, built for locals deciding where to take the family on Friday and for visitors refueling after a day at Space Center Houston.

What we mean by Clear Lake

For this guide, Clear Lake means the Houston neighborhoods around NASA's Johnson Space Center and Bay Area Boulevard (ZIP codes 77058, 77059 and 77062), plus the small cities of Webster and Nassau Bay. We left out League City, Kemah, Seabrook, Friendswood and Pasadena, even though they're close. They deserve their own lists. Our Clear Lake area page has the wider neighborhood picture.

The quick list

  • For the classic Tex-Mex night out: Pappasito's Cantina in Webster.
  • For a family table with weekend brunch: Lupe Tortilla on West Bay Area Boulevard.
  • For hand-made tortillas and a serious margarita list: Escalante's.
  • For a neighborhood Mexican restaurant with long roots: El Dorado Mexican Restaurant.
  • For pan dulce and breakfast tacos at dawn: Martinez Mexican Bakery.
  • For quesabirria and aguas frescas: Beto's Taqueria.
  • For queso and late-afternoon tacos: Torchy's Tacos Baybrook.
  • For fajitas delivered to the house or office: Fajita Pete's.

How we chose

We wanted a mix: the big Tex-Mex dining rooms people drive in for, plus the smaller family-run places that locals actually use on a Tuesday. Every restaurant here had to be inside our Clear Lake boundary and show a current address on its own official website as of October 2026. Where a site posts hours, we give them as "typically"; restaurants change schedules, so check the official site before you go.

We dropped a few places we'd have liked to include because we couldn't confirm them on an official site. A shorter list we can stand behind beats a longer one that sends you to a locked door.

Tex-Mex institutions

Pappasito's Cantina (Webster)

Webster, 20099 Gulf Fwy · Tex-Mex · typically open daily for lunch and dinner

Pappasito's is the big-night-out Tex-Mex cantina, and the Webster location is the one Bay Area families use for birthdays, graduations and out-of-town guests. The restaurant itself pitches this branch as the one near NASA, Great Wolf Lodge, the Kemah Boardwalk and Galveston, which tells you who's at the next table: half locals, half visitors in vacation mode.

What to order: sizzling fajitas, a handcrafted margarita, and the Cajetas for dessert. Pappasito's lists the Reserva Margarita among its signatures.

Why it's here: it's the big, loud, reliable Tex-Mex night in Clear Lake. Hours typically run 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and the restaurant takes reservations through its site, which is worth doing on weekends.

Lupe Tortilla (Clear Lake)

Webster, 891 W Bay Area Blvd · Tex-Mex · open daily, brunch on weekends

Lupe Tortilla's own page calls this its Clear Lake/Webster restaurant, and it's built for families: big tables, a long fajita menu and a kitchen that does the basics well. Look for the Steak Lupe (carne asada topped with tomatoes, onions, peppers and Jack cheese) or the queso flameado with chorizo if you're sharing.

Insider tip: weekend brunch typically runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, and happy hour is typically 3 to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays, per the location page. Lupe's also has a join-the-waitlist option on its site, which is the move on a Friday night.

Why it's here: it's the easiest yes when you've got grandparents and toddlers at the same table. See our best brunch in Houston guide for more weekend options.

Escalante's Fine Tex-Mex (Bay Area)

Webster, 1043 W Bay Area Blvd · Tex-Mex and tequila · open daily

Escalante's opened its first restaurant in Houston in 1993 on the recipes of a co-founder's grandmother, the restaurant's namesake. The Bay Area location sits on the same stretch of West Bay Area Boulevard as Lupe Tortilla, so you can pick your Tex-Mex camp without changing parking lots.

Here's the detail that sold us: Escalante's says it makes both its flour and corn tortillas by hand, fresh to order. The beef fajitas use center-cut outer skirt steak marinated overnight, and the queso blanco is the house signature.

What to order: the chile con queso blanco, beef fajitas and a hand-shaken margarita. Every margarita on the menu can be made zero-proof, which is handy for the designated driver.

Why it's here: it's our pick when you want a polished Tex-Mex dinner in Clear Lake. It typically opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends, when there's a brunch menu.

El Dorado Mexican Restaurant

Clear Lake, 1962 El Dorado Blvd · Mexican and Tex-Mex · open daily

El Dorado is the neighborhood answer to the big chains: a family-style Mexican restaurant on El Dorado Boulevard that says it has served the area for more than 20 years. The menu runs from nachos and enchiladas to fajitas, with a promise of fresh guacamole and tacos made to order.

Insider tip: El Dorado runs weekly deals, including a fajitas-for-two night and a kids-eat-free night. Check its site for the current schedule before you plan around one.

Why it's here: for the 77062 side of Clear Lake, this is the regular weeknight table. Hours are typically 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, later on Friday and Saturday.

Taquerias, panaderías and breakfast

Martinez Mexican Bakery

Clear Lake, 17637 El Camino Real · panadería and restaurant · typically 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily

Martinez is two places in one: a traditional panadería with conchas, empanadas and sweet breads, and a casual, full-service Mexican restaurant. The family-owned shop says its breakfast tacos are Jalisco-style, scratch-made and wrapped in homemade tortillas.

The menu goes deeper than you'd guess from the pastry case: chilaquiles, huevos con machacado, menudo, caldo de mariscos, pollo con mole and even Honduran baleadas.

Why it's here: it's the Clear Lake breakfast stop that also does a proper lunch. Grab a box of pan dulce on the way out. More early-morning ideas are in our best breakfast in Houston guide.

Beto's Taqueria

Clear Lake, 17068 Saturn Ln · taqueria · check the site for hours

A taqueria on Saturn Lane, a few minutes from Johnson Space Center, is about as Clear Lake as it gets. Beto's leads with quesabirria tacos and 100% natural aguas frescas, and its menu covers house specialties, breakfast and build-your-own tacos.

Insider tip: Beto's does catering by phone, which makes it a smart call for an office lunch or a team watch party.

Why it's here: it's the taqueria pick for people who want consommé on the side, not queso. For more birria and al pastor across the city, see the best tacos in Houston.

Torchy's Tacos (Baybrook)

Webster, 19431 Gatebrook Dr., Suite 3 · tacos · dine-in, pickup, curbside and drive-thru

Torchy's Baybrook location in Webster is our pick for a quick after-school or after-work taco stop. The order is the Green Chile Queso with chips and a Trailer Park taco. The location lists dine-in, pickup, curbside and drive-thru, which makes it the easiest stop on this list when you're on the move.

Why it's here: when half the car wants tacos and the other half wants queso, this settles it.

Fajita Pete's (Clear Lake)

Clear Lake, 16809 El Camino Real, Suite A · fajitas, built for delivery and catering

Fajita Pete's sits at El Camino Real and Bay Area Boulevard, around the corner from NASA, and it's built for fajitas to go. Plates come with tortillas, beans, rice, pico, guacamole and chips and salsa, scaled from one person up to a crowd.

I didn't know that: the company's founder opened his first Fajita Pete's in 2008, and a hurricane hit soon after. The store kept cooking through the storm and delivered fajitas to the neighborhood, which the company still calls its founding story.

Why it's here: it's the Clear Lake answer to "can we feed 20 people tonight without cooking?" Hours are typically shorter on weekends, so check before you order.

Save this: a Clear Lake Mexican food day

  1. Breakfast: conchas and a Jalisco-style breakfast taco at Martinez Mexican Bakery on El Camino Real.
  2. Morning: the rockets and tram tour at Space Center Houston.
  3. Lunch: quesabirria and an agua fresca at Beto's on Saturn Lane.
  4. Afternoon: walk it off around the lake. Our things to do in Clear Lake guide has the parks.
  5. Dinner: fajitas and a margarita at Pappasito's, Lupe Tortilla or Escalante's. Book or join the waitlist online on weekends.

Before you go: a quick checklist

  • Check hours on the restaurant's own site the day you go. Weekend hours differ at several places on this list.
  • Friday and Saturday nights get busy at the big Tex-Mex rooms; use the online waitlist or reservations where offered.
  • Want brunch? Lupe Tortilla and Escalante's both list weekend brunch menus.
  • Feeding a crowd? Fajita Pete's and Beto's both cater.
  • Driving someone home? Escalante's makes any margarita zero-proof.
