Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Clear Lake: 11 Family Favorites

Date Published

Here's a Clear Lake detail worth knowing before your next family dinner: T-Bone Tom's in Kemah started out as the Kemah Meat Market in the 1960s and turned into a barbecue joint in 1974, according to the restaurant. Your kids are eating brisket at a place that was cutting meat before their grandparents could drive.

That's the spirit of this list. Kid-friendly in Clear Lake shouldn't mean a sad plate of nuggets. These are the restaurants where children have something to look at or a menu built for them, adults get food they'd order anyway, and nobody minds a little noise.

How we define Clear Lake

For this guide, Clear Lake means the Houston neighborhood around NASA's Johnson Space Center and Bay Area Boulevard, plus the small cities that ring the lake itself: Webster, Nassau Bay, El Lago, Taylor Lake Village, Seabrook, Kemah and Clear Lake Shores. Every pick sits inside that loop, from the Gulf Freeway restaurant row in Webster to the waterfront at Kemah. We didn't stretch to Pearland, Friendswood or the I-45 stretch of League City. For more on the area itself, see our Clear Lake area page.

The quick list

  • For the biggest wow: the Aquarium restaurant on the Kemah Boardwalk, with floor-to-ceiling fish tanks.
  • For a whole day out: the Kemah Boardwalk, which is free to walk onto, with rides sold separately.
  • For movie fans: Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. on the Boardwalk, full of Forrest Gump memorabilia.
  • For barbecue and a big backyard: T-Bone Tom's in Kemah.
  • For milkshakes in a 1970s room: Tookie's Burgers in Kemah.
  • For a kids' meal that comes with ice cream: Escalante's in Webster.
  • For a launch-day lunch: The Food Lab inside Space Center Houston.
  • For Tex-Mex with a crowd: Pappasito's, Lupe Tortilla or Chuy's, all in Webster.
  • For Gulf seafood with grandparents: Pappas Seafood House in Webster.

How we chose

We looked for places that work for the whole table: a published kids' menu, something for kids to look at or do, room for strollers and high chairs, and food adults genuinely want. Each restaurant here was confirmed operating on its own official website in October 2026, with current hours or a current location page.

We only repeat kids'-menu details a restaurant publishes itself, and we left out places we couldn't confirm on an official site. Hours and menus change, so treat everything below as "typically" and check the restaurant's site before you load up the car.

Kemah waterfront: dinner with a view

Aquarium on the Kemah Boardwalk

Kemah · seafood and more · inside the Boardwalk

This is the one kids talk about afterward. The Boardwalk describes it as a sea-themed restaurant with enormous floor-to-ceiling aquarium tanks, so dinner comes with fish drifting past the table. The menu is seafood-led, with desserts that are as much a show as the tanks.

Insider tip: Kemah Boardwalk is free to enter; you only buy tickets if you want the rides. The whole property is cashless, including the parking lots and the smaller food stands, so bring a card. Plan the rest of the day with our Kemah Boardwalk guide.

Best for: birthdays, visiting grandparents, and kids who'd rather watch fish than a screen.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

Kemah · 5 Kemah Boardwalk · typically open daily from 11 a.m.

If anyone at your table has seen Forrest Gump, this is an easy win. The restaurant is decorated with memorabilia and stills from the movie, plus reproductions of script pages, storyboards and some costumes. Order the shrimp, obviously, and let the kids hunt the walls for scenes they recognize.

Best for: a casual lunch between rides, with the bay right outside.

Quick bites on the Boardwalk

Not every Boardwalk meal needs a sit-down. The Pizza Oven, Sweet Scoops and Bayside Grille cover pizza slices, ice cream and quick eats, and cotton candy and funnel cakes are always on sale, according to the Boardwalk. Remember these stands are cashless too.

Old Kemah classics

T-Bone Tom's

Kemah · 707 Hwy 146 · barbecue, steaks and seafood · kids' menu

T-Bone Tom's smokes its brisket, ribs and homemade sausage on oak, and it says everything is made fresh daily. The menu runs much wider than barbecue, with hand-cut steaks, gumbo and chicken-fried steak. The restaurant's line is "hand battered never frozen," and it applies to everything from the armadillo eggs to the chicken-fried steak. Kids will want to order the armadillo eggs for the name alone.

There's a dedicated kids' menu, and Tom's Back Yard, which shares the address, keeps later hours than the dining room. The restaurant hosts live music six nights a week, so an early dinner is your friend if you have little ones who need to be in bed.

Typical hours: the dining room is open from 11 a.m. daily, closing at 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Best for: a Friday night where the adults want brisket and the kids want a basket of something fried.

Tookie's Burgers

Kemah · 406 Texas Ave · burgers and shakes · kids' menu

Tookie's is a Kemah burger landmark with what it calls a "vintage 70s setting." The restaurant was badly damaged by Hurricane Ike in 2008 and restored with a new kitchen, larger restrooms and added patio dining, keeping the same menu and decor. The patties are made fresh daily, the menu has more than 30 years behind it, and the homepage shouts "MILKSHAKES, MILKSHAKES, & MORE MILKSHAKES," which tells you what to order for dessert.

Bringing kids? Tookie's says it has a special menu just for them with plenty of options. Non-burger eaters can get grilled chicken or fish.

Typical hours: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. most days, with later closing on Friday and Saturday.

Best for: a post-Boardwalk dinner and a round of shakes.

Webster and the Gulf Freeway: big-table Tex-Mex and seafood

The I-45 frontage road in Webster is where Clear Lake families go when they need a table for ten on short notice. These are big, loud, well-run rooms, which is exactly what you want with kids.

Escalante's Clear Lake

Webster · 1043 W Bay Area Blvd · Tex-Mex · kids' menu

Escalante's kids' menu is our favorite small parenting perk on this list: every kids' meal comes with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The "Little Amigos" menu is for children 12 and under, dine-in only, with options like a cheese quesadilla, chicken tenders, a crispy taco or a chicken or steak fajita, plus two sides from Mexican rice, refried beans or grilled vegetables.

Typical hours: 11 a.m. most days, with a 10 a.m. start on weekends and weekend brunch on the menu.

Best for: a weekend brunch where the adults get a real Tex-Mex plate.

Pappasito's Cantina

Webster · 20099 Gulf Fwy · Tex-Mex · kids' meals

Pappasito's calls its Webster location the one that's "near NASA, Great Wolf Lodge, the Kemah Boardwalk, and Galveston Island," which makes it a natural stop on a Bay Area day. Kids' meals are for amigos 12 and under and include a choice of apple juice, milk or soda, served with rice and refried beans. Fajitas sizzle past constantly, which buys you a few minutes of quiet.

Best for: sizzling fajitas after a day at Space Center Houston or Great Wolf Lodge.

Lupe Tortilla Clear Lake

Webster · 891 W Bay Area Blvd · Tex-Mex · weekend brunch

Lupe Tortilla's Clear Lake / Webster restaurant is typically open from 11 a.m. daily, closing at 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The chain lets you join the waitlist online from its location page, which is the single best trick for eating out with hungry kids: get in line from the car.

Best for: a weekend brunch with a big group.

Chuy's Webster

Webster · 20975 Gulf Fwy · Tex-Mex

Chuy's is one of the tenants of Webster Town Center, the City of Webster's dining and shopping cluster off I-45, so it's an easy add-on to an errand run. It's a big, colorful, noisy room, which is a feature when you're dining with kids: nobody will notice a toddler announcing their opinions about rice. Check the restaurant's own site for the current menu and hours before you go.

Best for: a weeknight dinner when nobody wants to cook. For more Tex-Mex across the city, see our best Tex-Mex in Houston guide.

Pappas Seafood House

Webster · 19991 I-45 S · Gulf seafood · kids' menu

When the grandparents are buying, this is the Clear Lake seafood house that pleases everyone. Pappas publishes a separate kids' menu for this location, so picky eaters are covered while the adults order Gulf seafood. Private dining rooms are available if you're hosting a team party or a family celebration.

Typical hours: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Best for: birthdays and graduation dinners. See also our best seafood restaurants in Houston.

Clear Lake proper: lunch at the space center

The Food Lab at Space Center Houston

Clear Lake · 1601 E NASA Pkwy · inside the museum

If your Clear Lake day starts with rockets, lunch is already solved. The Food Lab is Space Center Houston's food hall, with seven concepts under one roof: coffee and pastries, grab-and-go, Tex-Mex and barbecue at Community Kitchen, sandwiches, pizza and flatbreads at Outer Crust, a grill, and build-your-own salads. The "I didn't know that" fact: Galaxy Greens tops its salads with micro-herbs grown on site. You can also skip the line by ordering on your phone.

Insider tip: the Food Lab is inside the museum, so plan it as lunch during a visit. Our Space Center Houston visitor guide covers tickets and how much time to allow.

Best for: feeding a family mid-tram-tour without leaving the building.

Save this: a Clear Lake family day

  1. Morning: Space Center Houston, with lunch at the Food Lab.
  2. Afternoon: drive to the Kemah Boardwalk. Walking on is free; buy ride tickets only if you want them.
  3. Early dinner: the Aquarium restaurant or Bubba Gump on the Boardwalk, or Tookie's Burgers a few blocks away for milkshakes.
  4. Rainy-day swap: trade the Boardwalk for an early Tex-Mex dinner on the Webster frontage road, where Lupe Tortilla lets you join the waitlist online.

Before you go: a family checklist

  • Check hours on the restaurant's own site the day you go.
  • Join the online waitlist at Lupe Tortilla before you leave the house.
  • Bring a card to Kemah Boardwalk. The property is cashless, parking included.
  • Eat early at T-Bone Tom's if you want to beat the live-music crowd.
  • Kids' menus at Escalante's and Pappasito's are for ages 12 and under.
