- Best Mexican Restaurants in The Woodlands: Tex-Mex, Tacos, Margaritas
The Woodlands has a reputation for golf courses, pine trees and corporate campuses. It also has a Tex-Mex dining room named for a teenage wrestling champion, a Monterrey-style grill with a speakeasy hidden inside, and a restaurant whose roots go back to 1979. You can eat very well here without driving into Houston.
This is our shortlist of Mexican restaurants in The Woodlands, from waterside Tex-Mex institutions to taco counters and chef-driven interior Mexican cooking. Every pick was confirmed open on its own official website in October 2026.
The quick list
- For a margarita by the water: Escalante's at Hughes Landing or Cyclone Anaya's on the Waterway.
- For interior Mexican cooking: Xalisko (Jalisco) or Monarca (Monterrey).
- For a late night after the mall: Spanish Flowers, which typically stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
- For mesquite fajitas: Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina.
- Before a show at the Pavilion: Pappasitos.
- For a family weekend breakfast: El Chaparro or Lupe Tortilla's weekend brunch.
- For a quick taco: Torchy's or Velvet Taco.
How we chose (and where The Woodlands ends)
For this guide, The Woodlands means The Woodlands Township, the master-planned community that spans Montgomery and Harris counties, including Creekside Park on its southwest side. We also include three restaurants on the Shenandoah stretch of I-45 at the Township's eastern edge, beside Market Street and The Woodlands Mall, because each one calls itself its brand's Woodlands location. We left out places that use a Woodlands name but sit in Spring, Magnolia or Conroe.
Each pick had to post current hours on its own official site. We favored places with a clear identity: a family recipe, a regional cooking style, a waterfront patio, a margarita worth ordering. Hours below are what the restaurants typically list; check before you go, especially on Mondays.
Tex-Mex institutions
Escalante's Fine Tex-Mex and Tequila
Hughes Landing, 1900 Hughes Landing Blvd · lake-view patio · open daily
Escalante's builds its menu on the recipes of Barbara Escalante, and it has been serving them for more than thirty years. The dish to order is the queso blanco, which the restaurant makes by simmering green peppers and onions in milk, then folding in a blend of cheeses with white cheddar it shreds in-house. Visit The Woodlands also points to the spicy margarita, the fajitas and the enchiladas famosas.
Insider tip: happy hour typically runs 3 to 6 pm on weekdays, and the restaurant opens at 10 am on weekends for brunch.
Why it's on the list: it's the classic Woodlands Tex-Mex night, with Lake Woodlands as the backdrop.
Cyclone Anaya's Mexican Kitchen
Waterway Square, 20 Waterway Ave · Waterway patio · open daily
Here's the fact to share at the table: the restaurant is named for Cyclone Anaya, a wrestler who, the family says, became the Champion of Mexico at 17. The first restaurant opened in 1966. The Woodlands location sits right on the Waterway, the 1.8-mile water feature that runs through Town Center from Lake Woodlands to The Woodlands Mall.
Order the crabmeat nachos, which Visit The Woodlands calls one of the Anaya family's secret recipes, and pair them with one of the jumbo margaritas. Hours are typically 11 am to 10 pm.
Why it's on the list: our favorite Town Center setting for a long Tex-Mex dinner, and a real Houston family story.
Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina
Six Pines Dr, Shenandoah edge of The Woodlands · next to Goode Co. Barbecue · open daily
Goode Company has been feeding Houston since Jim Goode opened his barbecue house in 1977. The Kitchen & Cantina says it was the first in Houston to grill fajitas over mesquite, and the menu leans on that fire: wood-fired quail in homemade tortillas, mesquite-grilled fajitas, and family-style parrilladas. Don't skip the jalapeño rellenos stuffed with house-made chorizo. The queso can be built up with ground beef, pico de gallo or guacamole.
Insider tip: it typically opens at 9 am on Saturdays and Sundays, so it doubles as a Tex-Mex brunch stop.
Why it's on the list: the most distinctive grill program on this list.
Pappasitos Cantina
I-45 North, Shenandoah edge of The Woodlands · near Market Street and the Pavilion · open daily
Pappasitos describes its Woodlands location as a favorite stop before concerts, and it sits near Market Street, The Woodlands Mall and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Expect sizzling fajitas, cold margaritas and a big, busy dining room. It takes reservations, which is worth doing on a concert night.
Why it's on the list: the dependable pre-show dinner when you're headed to the Pavilion.
Lupe Tortilla
I-45 Freeway, Shenandoah edge of The Woodlands · weekend brunch · open daily
Lupe Tortilla lists this location as The Woodlands / Shenandoah, and it's a crowd-pleaser for families. It typically serves brunch from 9 am to 2 pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and happy hour runs 3 to 6:30 pm on weekdays. Fajitas and margaritas are the reason most people come.
Why it's on the list: an easy yes for a big group with kids.
Interior Mexican and chef-driven
Xalisko Cocina Mexicana
Town Center, 1335 Lake Woodlands Dr · near The Woodlands Mall
Xalisko is the place to taste regional cooking from Jalisco. Chef Beatriz Martines grew up in Guadalajara and, according to the restaurant, worked at the three-Michelin-star El Celler de Can Roca in Spain before opening this family restaurant. Look for the slow-cooked trompito, the ceviche and the tequila-infused shrimp. Tuesdays are built around al pastor, and the restaurant also hosts a Noche Bohemia evening.
Insider tip: reservations go through OpenTable, and the menus include brunch, vegetarian and kids' options.
Why it's on the list: our pick for interior Mexican cooking in The Woodlands.
Monarca Modern Mexican Cocina
Creekside Park, 26400 Kuykendahl Rd · closed Mondays
Monarca's owners have roots in Monterrey, and the menu reflects northern Mexico's love of grilled meat. The kitchen cooks in a Josper charcoal oven: try the ribeye tacos, the tacos gobernador with grilled shrimp and poblano, or the slow-cooked chamorro adobado. The restaurant singles out its guava margarita as a guest favorite.
Insider tip: there's a hidden speakeasy bar, typically open Thursday to Saturday. Monarca is closed on Mondays and opens only for dinner on Tuesdays, so plan around it.
Why it's on the list: the most date-night Mexican dinner in the Township, with the best secret on this list.
Spanish Flowers Cocina Mexicana
The Woodlands Mall, 1201 Lake Woodlands Dr · late on weekends
Spanish Flowers dates to 1979, and its Woodlands location at the mall calls itself a sophisticated take on authentic Mexican cuisine. The drinks are a big part of the draw: handcrafted margaritas, fresh-squeezed juices and house-made horchata.
Insider tip: it typically stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and happy hour runs from 11 am to close Monday through Thursday. That makes it the rare late-night Mexican option in Town Center.
Why it's on the list: a long-running name, a mall-side location and late hours.
Family spots and taquerias
El Chaparro Mexican Bar & Grill
Research Forest Dr · family-owned · breakfast menu
El Chaparro is a family-owned restaurant with three locations north of Houston, and the Woodlands one is on Research Forest Drive. It has a breakfast menu, a kids' menu, daily lunch specials and margaritas. It typically opens at 10:30 am on weekends.
Why it's on the list: a relaxed neighborhood Mexican restaurant for a weekday lunch or a Saturday breakfast.
Torchy's Tacos
Research Forest Dr · drive-thru · open from 9 am
The Woodlands Torchy's is set up for speed, with a drive-thru, curbside pickup and dine-in. Order the Green Chile Queso, which Visit The Woodlands describes as topped with guacamole, cotija, cilantro and Diablo sauce.
Why it's on the list: our pick for a quick taco on a busy Saturday, and it opens early.
Velvet Taco
Gosling Rd · open daily
Velvet Taco is the counterpoint to the combination plates above. Its weekly taco feature, which it calls the WTF, changes every week, so there's always a reason to come back. It's typically open 10:30 am to 10 pm every day.
Why it's on the list: the taco stop for the friend who wants something new every time.
