- Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Katy: Playgrounds, Patios and Kids Menus
Here's a Katy parenting hack you won't find on a menu: two of the Tex-Mex spots on this list print kids' drawings on their children's menu placemats, and families can submit art for the next round. That tells you something about Katy dining. Plenty of restaurants here don't just put up with kids, they plan for them, with playgrounds, lawns, kids menus and parking lots big enough for the minivan.
This is our shortlist of kid friendly restaurants in Katy: ten places where a family dinner can actually feel relaxed. Some have a playground, some sit next to a lawn where kids can run, and a few come with bowling, go-karts or a movie attached.
What we mean by Katy
Katy is bigger than the City of Katy. For this guide, Katy means the city itself plus the unincorporated, Katy-addressed communities around it along I-10 and the Grand Parkway, including Cinco Ranch, the Katy Mills area and the Grand Parkway corridor. Every pick has a Katy, TX mailing address. We left out places east of Katy with Houston addresses, such as the Energy Corridor (that's its own guide), and the neighboring towns of Fulshear and Brookshire.
The quick list
- Best playground: Jimmy Changas on Westgreen, where the kids meal includes access to Jimmy's Jungle.
- Best for running around before dessert: Dish Society at LaCenterra, whose patio spills onto the lawn.
- Best for little kids who love a show: Rainforest Cafe at Katy Mills.
- Best breakfast with kids: Black Walnut Cafe or Sweet Paris, both on Cinco Ranch Boulevard.
- Best for a birthday-level outing: Andretti Indoor Karting & Games or Main Event.
- Best for dinner and a movie in one seat: Flix Brewhouse at LaCenterra.
How we chose
We looked for at least one real reason a parent would pick each place: a playground, a lawn or patio, a proper kids menu, early opening hours, or something to do besides eat. Each restaurant had to show its Katy address and current hours on its own official website as of October 2026. Kids menu details come from each restaurant's published menu.
Hours, deals and kids-eat-free nights change, so treat everything below as "typically" and check the restaurant's site before you load up the car.
Playgrounds and Tex-Mex
Jimmy Changas
East Katy, 300 Westgreen Blvd · Tex-Mex · open daily for lunch and dinner
This is the one to bookmark if your kids measure a restaurant by its playground. Jimmy Changas describes Jimmy's Jungle as a spacious playground for "the younger monkeys," and the Little Jimmys menu for kids 12 and under includes a drink, soft-serve ice cream and access to the Jungle. Kids can pick from chicken nuggets, a cheese enchilada, mac and cheese, mini cheese quesadillas, a crispy taco and more.
Insider tip: Jimmy Changas features kid-drawn art on its Little Jimmys placemat, choosing two drawings every three to four months. The rules: black ink, plain white 8.5 by 11 paper, uploaded through the form on its kids menu page. The restaurant also has an online waitlist, which helps on Friday nights.
Best for: wearing kids out before bedtime.
Gringo's Mexican Kitchen
Grand Parkway, 230 W Grand Pkwy S · Tex-Mex · open daily for lunch and dinner
Gringo's is the sister restaurant to Jimmy Changas, and its Niños menu is packed with puns kids enjoy reading out loud: Cha-Cha Chicken nuggets, "Maraca-Roni" mac and cheese, the Aunt Chilada cheese enchilada and the Tio Taco. Gringo's runs the same placemat art program, so a young artist has two chances to get published.
Best for: a Grand Parkway dinner when you want Tex-Mex without a long drive. You can join the waitlist online before you leave the house.
LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch: park once, eat, play
LaCenterra is the easiest family dinner plan in Katy because everything is walkable. Its Central Green is a half-acre public park at the south end of the center, with a permanent stage, open lawn, big oak shade trees and seating, and LaCenterra hosts family activities, live music and movie nights there. Park once, eat, let the kids loose on the grass, then walk to dessert.
Dish Society
LaCenterra, 2643 Commercial Center Blvd · Southern farm-to-table · open daily from 7 a.m.
Dish Society says it plainly: its Katy patio "sprawls into the LaCenterra lawn," and it's built for letting little ones stretch their legs while grown-ups finish dinner. The kids menu covers the classics, with quesadillas the menu calls Childish Quesadillas, kids pasta with butter and parmesan or red sauce, grilled chicken strips and fried chicken tenders. It opens at 7 a.m., so it works for breakfast too.
Insider tip: Dish Society has typically run a Tuesday Kids Eat Free deal for kids 12 and under, with the purchase of a regular entrée, salad or sandwich. Confirm it on the Katy location page before you go.
Best for: a weeknight dinner where the adults get to sit down.
Grimaldi's Coal Brick-Oven Pizzeria
LaCenterra, 2643 Commercial Center Blvd · pizza · open daily for lunch and dinner
Pizza is the safe answer for picky eaters, and Grimaldi's adds a view. Its Cinco Ranch location has a patio overlooking the lake, which makes an outdoor table more fun on a cool evening. The pizza comes out of a coal-fired brick oven, and a whole pie is easy to share across a table of kids.
Best for: big groups and team dinners. For more pies around town, see our best pizza in Houston guide.
Flix Brewhouse
LaCenterra, 2707 Commercial Center Blvd · dine-in movie theater · showtimes daily
Flix serves a full menu at your seat during first-run movies, with beer brewed on site for the adults. It's dinner and a movie without the second stop.
Know the age rules before you buy tickets: kids 2 to 5 can see G, PG and PG-13 movies that start before 7 p.m., and kids 6 to 16 can see those ratings with a parent or responsible adult. Babies under 2 are allowed only at Flix Junior events.
Best for: families with school-age kids and a free Saturday afternoon.
Breakfast with kids on Cinco Ranch Boulevard
Black Walnut Cafe
Cinco Ranch, 23233 Cinco Ranch Blvd · American café · open daily from 7 a.m.
Black Walnut is the early-riser's pick, opening at 7 a.m. every day. Its breakfast and lunch menu has dedicated kids' breakfast and kids' lunch sections, and the adult menu leans comfortable: mini buttermilk pancakes, French toast, omelets, burgers and pasta. It also runs a weekend brunch menu.
Best for: Saturday breakfast after early soccer games.
Sweet Paris Crêperie & Café
LaCenterra, 23501 Cinco Ranch Blvd · crêpes and waffles · open daily from 8 a.m.
Sweet Paris is a treat that still counts as a meal, and it sits inside LaCenterra, so the lawn is a short walk away. The kids menu has kid-sized crêpes in flavors like ham and mozzarella, pepperoni pizza, peanut butter and jelly, Nutella and dulce de leche. Order The Little Parisian, a strawberry and banana crêpe with Nutella, dulce de leche or maple syrup.
Best for: birthdays, report-card rewards and grandparents' visits. For more morning options, see our best brunch in Houston guide.
Eat-and-play destinations off I-10 and the Grand Parkway
Rainforest Cafe
Katy Mills, 5000 Katy Mills Circle · themed restaurant · open daily
For preschoolers, this might be the most exciting restaurant in Katy. Rainforest Cafe promises waterfalls, indoor rainstorms, trumpeting elephants and gorillas, and the kids menu comes with sides like corn, applesauce, steamed vegetables or fresh fruit. Finish with the Sparkling Volcano, a tower of brownie, chocolate cake and ice cream big enough for the table.
Know before you go: the restaurant warns that its flashing lights and thunder sounds may cause discomfort, or seizures for anyone with photosensitive epilepsy. Noise-sensitive kids may want ear protection. It also closes earlier than you might expect, typically 6 p.m. on Sundays, so check the hours.
Best for: a rainy day at Katy Mills.
Main Event
I-10, 24401 Katy Freeway · bowling, arcade and restaurant · open daily
Main Event is a classic Katy birthday-party pick, and it works just as well for a regular Friday night. The Katy center has bowling, laser tag, an arcade, billiards, gravity ropes and its Human Crane, plus an in-center restaurant with shareable appetizers, sandwiches and desserts. You can book a table ahead.
Best for: mixed-age groups, where the teenagers want laser tag and the little ones want the arcade.
Andretti Indoor Karting & Games
Grand West, 1230 Grand West Blvd · karting, games and restaurant · open daily
Andretti's Katy center covers more than 90,000 square feet, with three kart tracks, more than 150 arcade games, a two-story laser tag arena and virtual reality. Its Fresh Kitchen serves shareable bites at your lane or table, and adults can watch the track from the bar.
Insider tip: karts have height and age requirements, so check them on the Andretti Katy site before you promise a race to a small driver. Andretti also sells value packages that bundle races, attractions, arcade points and a menu item.
Best for: older kids and tweens with energy to burn.
