Happy hours Montrose illustration: crescent moon, clock, porrón, martini and oysters on a bar

The best happy hours in Montrose, Houston, line Westheimer Road and the side streets between Montrose Boulevard and Shepherd Drive. Our top picks are $2 Atlantic oysters at Little's Oyster Bar on South Shepherd Drive, $5 freezer martinis at the Augustine Lounge inside Hotel Saint Augustine, and a $24 porrón of Spanish wine at Barcelona Wine Bar on Westheimer. Every deal below comes from the venue's own website or official menu.

Montrose happy hour barely stops. Postino pours $6 wine until 5 p.m. every day, and Rosie Cannonball's happy hour doesn't even start until 9:30 at night.

Happy hour deals change often. Treat every time and price below as "typically" and check the official site the day you go.

What counts as Montrose in this guide?

We use the same boundaries as our other Montrose guides: Allen Parkway and Buffalo Bayou on the north, Spur 527 and Bagby Street on the east, US 59 (I-69) on the south, and Shepherd Drive on the west. Little's Oyster Bar sits right on that western edge, on South Shepherd, and calls Montrose home on its own website, so it makes the list.

Midtown (east of Spur 527), River Oaks and Upper Kirby (west of Shepherd) and the Museum District (south of US 59) are outside this list. For those, start with the citywide best happy hours in Houston, or head north to the best happy hours in the Heights.

How we chose

We kept only bars and restaurants whose own website or official menu showed a Montrose address, current hours and a posted happy hour, with deals and prices where the venue publishes them. Places we could only confirm on review sites or social posts were left out. The result: nine posted happy hours and one weekly oyster night that we think beats most of them.

The quick list

  • Cheapest oysters we found: Little's Oyster Bar, $2 Atlantic oysters Tuesday to Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m.
  • Earliest weekday start: the Augustine Lounge at Hotel Saint Augustine and The Pit Room's patio, both from 2 p.m.
  • Seven days a week: Postino Montrose (until 5 p.m.) and Uchi Houston (4 to 6 p.m.).
  • Latest happy hour: Rosie Cannonball, 9:30 to 10:30 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday.
  • Best for a group: Barcelona Wine Bar, where a porrón of house Rioja is $24.
  • Biggest splurge: Uchi's nine-course happy hour tasting for two.
  • Most old-school: Sorrento, with a piano at the bar and half-price bottles.

Westheimer Road

Westheimer Road is Montrose's main drinking street, and five of our picks sit along it between Taft Street and Shepherd Drive.

1. Uchi Houston

904 Westheimer Rd · Japanese · happy hour daily, 4 to 6 p.m.

Uchi Houston on Westheimer runs its happy hour every day from 4 to 6 p.m., and the menu is long enough to make dinner out of it. Its happy hour menu typically lists $10 cocktails, including a lychee martini, $6 Sapporo, $9 glasses of wine, hand rolls from $5 and two-piece nigiri such as avocado for $5. The showpiece is a nine-course happy hour omakase for two, listed at $120.

I didn't know that: Uchi means "home" in Japanese, and the Houston restaurant was designed to keep the arched window openings of the historic building it moved into.

What to order: a hand roll or two, the corn ribs and a lychee martini. For more raw fish, see our best sushi in Montrose.

Why it's here: seven days a week, and the cheapest way into one of Montrose's most talked-about kitchens.

2. Sorrento Ristorante

415 Westheimer Rd · Italian · happy hour Tuesday to Friday, 3 to 6 p.m.

Sorrento Ristorante, on Westheimer between Montrose Boulevard and Taft Street, is the most old-school happy hour on this list. Its happy hour page typically lists $6 prosecco, $8 glasses of Italian and California wine, $8 well drinks, bruschetta for $10 and cheese pizza for $12. Bottles are half price at happy hour, which brings an Amarone or a Brunello to $50.

What to do: sit at the rounded bar by the piano. The restaurant says its dining room is hung with Picasso and Chagall paintings, so take a look on your way to the restroom.

Why it's here: the half-price bottle list. Sorrento is closed Mondays.

3. Traveler's Table (weekly oyster night)

520 Westheimer Rd · global kitchen · International Oyster Night, Wednesdays 5 to 10 p.m.

Traveler's Table doesn't post a classic happy hour, but its Wednesday International Oyster Night is too good to leave out. Each plate is typically $20: nine raw Gulf oysters, six raw East Coast oysters, or six oysters cooked a different way, from Peruvian-style with aji amarillo to roasted Viet-Cajun with lemongrass and garlic butter.

Good to know: it's dine-in only, while supplies last.

Why it's here: the most adventurous oyster deal in Montrose. Order two different plates and share.

4. Rosie Cannonball

1620 Westheimer Rd · wood-fired European · happy hour Tuesday to Sunday, 9:30 to 10:30 p.m.

Rosie Cannonball on Westheimer flips the usual schedule: its happy hour runs at the end of the night, from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m., Tuesday to Sunday. The restaurant doesn't post happy hour prices online, so ask when you sit down. The kitchen cooks around a wood-burning oven and grill, and the wine list was put together by Master Sommelier June Rodil, with a focus on Italy, Spain and France.

Insider tip: Montrose Cheese & Wine, the shop next door at 1618 Westheimer, comes from the same Goodnight Hospitality group. Pick up a bottle or a wedge for home on your way out.

Why it's here: the only late-night happy hour we found in Montrose, and the perfect last stop.

5. Barcelona Wine Bar

1731 Westheimer Rd · Spanish tapas · happy hour Monday to Friday, 4 to 6 p.m.

Barcelona Wine Bar, near the Shepherd Drive end of Westheimer, runs one of the best-value group happy hours in the neighborhood. Its Montrose happy hour menu typically lists La Nevera Rioja, red or white, for $6 a glass or $24 a porrón, $7 mini cocktails such as an espresso martini or a dirty martini, and snacks at one for $5.50, two for $10 or three for $14.50. Sherries and bottles of sparkling wine are half off.

What to order: a porrón for the table, which is a Spanish glass pitcher with a long spout, plus patatas bravas and jamón and Manchego croquetas.

Why it's here: the porrón. Barcelona also lists half-off bottles on Sundays.

Off Westheimer

The rest of our picks sit a few blocks off the main drag.

6. Postino Montrose

805 Pacific St · wine cafe · happy hour daily until 5 p.m.

Postino Montrose on Pacific Street runs its happy hour every day until 5 p.m., with $6 glasses of wine and $6 pitchers of beer, according to its location page. On Monday and Tuesday after 8 p.m., its Board + Bottle deal typically pairs a board of bruschetta with a bottle of wine for $25. Postino is card and mobile pay only.

7. Bludorn

807 Taft St · Gulf Coast and French · happy hour 4 to 6 p.m.

Bludorn on Taft Street posts a happy hour menu with some of the best seafood value in Montrose. It typically lists oysters for $3 each, served five ways (raw, dressed, smoked, fried or roasted), $10 cocktails such as a Bramble, a Hotel Nacional or a Tommy's margarita, $10 six-ounce pours of wine and a $5 draft pilsner. The menu doesn't list days, and the posted dinner hours start at 5 p.m., so call before you go.

Insider tip: self-parking is in the back lot facing Rhode Place, and valet is out front on Taft Street.

Why it's here: a fried oyster and a Champagne cocktail in one of Montrose's top dining rooms, for less than a main course. More special-occasion ideas are in our date night in Montrose guide.

8. The Pit Room (The Patio)

1201 Richmond Ave · barbecue and patio bar · happy hour drinks Monday to Friday, 2 to 7 p.m.

The Pit Room on Richmond Avenue runs its happy hour at The Patio, its outdoor bar next door at 1205 Richmond. Happy hour drinks typically run Monday to Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. The Pit Room doesn't post happy hour prices online.

I didn't know that: the barbecue is cooked on two custom barrel-style offset smokers built by a fabricator in Stafford, and The Pit Room says all of its beef is USDA Prime.

What to do: grab brisket from the counter, carry it to the patio and watch the game. Crawfish shows up in season. For more smoked meat, see our best BBQ in Montrose.

Why it's here: five hours of happy hour and a patio built for it.

9. Augustine Lounge at Hotel Saint Augustine

4110 Loretto Dr · hotel lounge · happy hour Monday to Friday, 2 to 5:30 p.m.

The Augustine Lounge, inside Hotel Saint Augustine on Loretto Drive, offers $5 bites and $5 freezer martinis at happy hour, Monday to Friday from 2 to 5:30 p.m. The lounge is open daily from 11 a.m. to midnight.

I didn't know that: the hotel's restaurant, Perseid, is named after the Perseid meteor shower, which peaks every August, as a nod to Houston's space history. It's run by Chef Aaron Bludorn, so you can do both of his happy hours in one afternoon.

Why it's here: the best deal for a drink after a museum visit. The hotel is on the same quiet streets as the Menil Collection and the Rothko Chapel.

10. Little's Oyster Bar

3001 S Shepherd Dr · seafood · happy hour Tuesday to Thursday, 4 to 6 p.m., bar only

Its happy hour menu also typically lists garlic cheese toast for $6, salt and pepper fries for $7, ceviche for $11, broiled oysters for $14, and $9 cocktails, including the Dill Breaker and a Golden Martini.

I didn't know that: Little's is the first chef-driven restaurant from the Pappas Restaurants group, according to its own website.

Why it's here: a dozen oysters for $24. Get there early, because happy hour is bar seating only.

Save this: two Montrose happy hour routes
