What counts as Midtown in this guide?

Midtown is the grid between downtown and the Museum District. We use the same lines as our Midtown date-night guide: the Pierce Elevated (I-45) on the north, the Southwest Freeway (US 59 / I-69) on the south, State Highway 288 on the east, and the Bagby Street and Spur 527 side on the west, where Midtown meets Montrose. Main Street and the METRORail Red Line run down the middle.

Two picks, Lost & Found and Ōporto, sit on the West Gray blocks at the western edge, and both put "Midtown" in their own web addresses. For happy hours just over the lines, see our guides to Downtown and Montrose, or the citywide best happy hours in Houston.

How we chose

We kept only bars and restaurants inside those lines whose own website or official menu showed current hours and a posted happy hour, all checked in November 2026. Places that don't publish a happy hour were left out, even popular ones, and so were spots we could only confirm on review sites. That leaves nine picks: a New Orleans grande dame, an oyster bar, a beer garden, two sports bars, two Latin kitchens, a lounge and a Portuguese wine house.

  • Best oysters: Winnie's, $1.50 Gulf oysters on weekday afternoons.
  • Most elegant: Brennan's of Houston, $8 cocktails and a $5 cup of gumbo.
