White Linen Night in Houston Heights is an annual street fair held every first Saturday of August on the 200 and 300 blocks of West 19th Street. Galleries, boutiques, food vendors, and live music stages take over the car-free blocks from 6 to 10 PM, and the crowd — tens of thousands strong — shows up dressed in white.
This guide covers the event's New Orleans origin, the 19th Street route, the best stops before and after the street fair closes, what to wear, how to survive August in Houston, and how to actually get there.
Where White Linen Night comes from
The original White Linen Night started in New Orleans' Warehouse Arts District in 1994, a tradition of wearing white linen in summer heat while gallery-hopping along Julia Street. Houston's version arrived in 2006, brought here by Chris and Kay Thayer — New Orleans natives who relocated to the Heights after Hurricane Katrina and opened a boutique on 19th Street. Along with the Heights First Saturday merchant group, the Thayers organized the first event, which drew more than 10,000 people to the block. Annual attendance grew to six figures within five years, according to longtime event organizer Mitch Cohen.
The part most visitors don't know: the event was completely free for its first 18 years. Paid admission debuted in 2024 to cover rising operational costs — a sign the street fair had outgrown volunteer-run logistics.
The main event: 19th Street between Yale and Ashland
19th Street between Yale Street and Ashland Street closes to vehicles for the event. Inside the four gated entrance points: 50-plus local artisan vendors, live music acts, food and drink from local chefs, street performances, and businesses along the strip that open late with their own in-store programming.
How we chose
Every stop on this list was confirmed currently open via its own official website or official social page as of October 2026. We focused on venues with a clear identity for White Linen Night — a gallery showing local artists, a bar with a special event, a market worth the walk — rather than every restaurant that happens to stay open that night. Hours change; confirm directly before you go.

What to wear (and what to skip)
The dress code is white or predominantly white. Linen is traditional — it's in the name — but any lightweight, breathable fabric in white or off-white works. August evenings in Houston sit between 80 and 90 degrees even after sunset, so go for loose cuts and flat shoes: 19th Street is uneven concrete and you will be on your feet for hours.
Skip: thick blazers, heels, anything dry-clean-only.
Bring: a refillable water bottle (coolers and reusable cups are allowed at the street fair; glass containers are not), a small personal fan, a phone charger, and sunscreen if you are starting at the 4 PM M-K-T market.
Getting there and parking
Organizers explicitly recommend rideshare — there is no official parking for the street fair, and the surrounding residential blocks fill fast. If you drive, arrive by 4 PM and park near M-K-T on Shepherd Drive or in a surface lot along Yale Street. Street parking on 19th Street itself closes before the event gates open at 6 PM.
The Heights is served by METRO bus routes on Yale Street and Heights Boulevard. Check ridemetro.org for current schedules, or see the METRO Houston guide for a broader look at the system.
