Houston has three Division I college football programs playing in the same city, each with its own stadium, traditions, and game-day character. The University of Houston Cougars (Big 12) play at TDECU Stadium in the Third Ward near downtown; the Rice Owls (American Athletic Conference) play at First Community Stadium on the Rice University campus near the Texas Medical Center; and the Texas Southern Tigers (Southwestern Athletic Conference) play at W.W. Thorne Stadium in North Houston, with their annual Homecoming game at Reliant Stadium. This guide covers tickets, parking, tailgating, and the seats worth buying at each venue.

The three programs at a glance

  • UH Cougars at TDECU Stadium — Third Ward, 3874 Holman St — Big 12 (since 2023), 39,700 seats
  • Rice Owls at First Community Stadium — Medical Center area, 6100 S Main St — AAC, 47,000 seats, opened 1950
  • TSU Tigers at W.W. Thorne Stadium — North Houston, 1865 Aldine-Bender Rd — SWAC, approximately 10,000 seats

How we chose

This guide covers every Division I college football program with a Houston-area home stadium. Each stadium was confirmed currently operating through official athletics websites and verified through public records as of October 2026. Specific ticket prices and parking costs are not included because they change each season — always check the official ticketing site. We did not include programs without a Houston home field.

UH Cougars at TDECU Stadium (Big 12)

TDECU Stadium opened in August 2014 at a cost of $128 million, replacing Robertson Stadium, which had served UH since 1946. It holds 39,700 fans on the University of Houston campus in the Third Ward, less than three miles from downtown Houston. The Cougars joined the Big 12 Conference in 2023 — the move brought stronger opposing fan bases and faster ticket demand for conference games.

The insider detail. The stadium’s most distinctive feature is a deliberate gap in the upper deck on the northwest side. The architects positioned it to frame a clear view of the Houston skyline from your seat. Look for it the first time you sit in the upper level — it’s the kind of design decision that you only appreciate once you’re inside.

Getting there

The fastest approach from downtown is the METRORail Purple Line. The station is within 100 yards of the stadium’s southwest entrance, which means you can park anywhere along the line and ride in without fighting post-game traffic. If you’re driving, 3,382 parking spaces sit adjacent to the stadium in a dedicated garage and surface lots. RV tailgaters should head to Lot 16B near the architecture school.

Tailgating

On game days, UH closes Cullen Boulevard — the main road that bisects campus — for tailgating. Students and fans gather at Shasta Square on the east side of the stadium. The Alumni Association hosts Party on the Plaza on the stadium grounds. Both open several hours before kickoff. Check uhcougars.com for the specific schedule each game day.

Tickets and best seats

Single-game tickets are available at uhcougars.com. Conference games against Big 12 opponents move faster than non-conference matchups — particularly any Bayou Bucket game against Rice, a rivalry that has Houston leading the all-time series 35–12. For the most affordable good seat, upper deck sections on the east side offer a full field view and tend to price lower than lower sideline sections. Student tickets require a valid UH ID and are sold through UH student services.

UH traditions

The Spirit of Houston is the 270-member marching and spirit ensemble; they enter the stadium from the east side. Shasta the Cougar is the team mascot. UH quarterback Andre Ware won the 1989 Heisman Trophy, passing for 4,699 yards and 46 touchdowns. For a pre-game meal near campus, the Third Ward restaurants guide and the EaDo guide are close.

Rice Owls at First Community Stadium (American Athletic Conference)

First Community Stadium opened September 30, 1950, and holds 47,000 fans on the Rice University campus at 6100 South Main Street, adjacent to the Texas Medical Center and within walking distance of Rice Village. The stadium carried the name Rice Stadium from its opening until October 2026, when a 20-year naming rights deal with First Community Credit Union took effect.

Rice competes in the American Athletic Conference, which it joined in 2023 after two decades in Conference USA.

The fact most visitors don’t know. On September 12, 1962, President John F. Kennedy stood in this stadium and delivered the speech that committed the country to landing on the Moon. An estimated 40,000 people were in the seats. Less than 12 years later, Super Bowl VIII was played here on January 13, 1974, with the Miami Dolphins defeating the Minnesota Vikings 24–7. You can sit in the same stadium where both of those things happened — for the price of an AAC football ticket.

Sightlines

Architects eliminated the running track to bring every seat closer to the field, then cantilevered both sides of the upper deck inward to sharpen the viewing angles. The result is widely considered among the best sightlines of any football stadium in Texas: almost every seat has a clear line to the sideline, with no equivalent of the obstructed upper corners found in more conventional designs.

One caveat: the upper deck is aging, and Rice has shifted some high-attendance games to nearby Reliant Stadium rather than open the upper sections. For most regular home games the full stadium is in use, but confirm the venue at riceowls.com before you go.

Getting there and parking

The stadium is at the south end of the Rice campus. Campus parking is available on game days; maps and current parking options are posted at riceowls.com before each home game. The Museum District and Rice Village are close enough for a pre-game meal if you park near the campus perimeter.

Tickets and best seats

Single-game tickets are at riceowls.com. AAC games generally carry lower demand than Big 12 matchups, which makes access easier for most home games. For the best experience, lower-level midfield sections take full advantage of the stadium’s famous sightlines. End zone seats are the budget option.

Rice traditions

Sammy the Owl is the team mascot. The Marching Owl Band performs at every home game. The Bayou Bucket is the trophy at stake when Rice plays Houston — a rivalry with roots in 1971 that now continues as an occasional non-conference matchup, not an annual guarantee. Check each school’s schedule to see if the game is on in a given season.

TSU Tigers at W.W. Thorne Stadium (SWAC)

Texas Southern University competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), which is composed entirely of historically Black colleges and universities. For the 2026 season, TSU plays home games at W.W. Thorne Stadium, which underwent a 2022–2024 renovation. The facility is at 1865 Aldine-Bender Road in North Houston near Beltway 8 and George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

Note the geography: TSU’s main campus is in Third Ward in south-central Houston, but Thorne Stadium is in the far north of the city — a different drive than you might expect. The stadium holds approximately 10,000 fans, with two-tiered stands on the west and east sides, a new scoreboard with dynamic lighting, and 1,600 on-site parking spaces.

Tickets

All regular-season TSU football tickets are sold through Tixr.com, which is the official Texas Southern Athletics ticket outlet. TSU notes on its website that it is not responsible for tickets purchased through non-official outlets.

The Labor Day Classic

The defining annual tradition is the Labor Day Classic against Prairie View A&M Panthers, played every year since 1985 (the rivalry itself dates to 1946). The two programs compete for the Durley-Nicks Trophy. The game alternates venues between TSU and Prairie View A&M each season — check tsusports.com to see when the Classic next comes to Houston.

TSU Homecoming at Reliant Stadium

Each season, TSU plays its Homecoming game at Reliant Stadium rather than at Thorne Stadium. The 72,000-seat venue in the Texas Medical Center area gives the game a scale that suits the occasion. Homecoming is the peak event of the TSU football calendar: the returning alumni, the full marching band, and the energy are a different experience from a regular Thorne Stadium game. Check tsusports.com for the Homecoming date each season and buy tickets through Tixr.com.

SWAC halftime traditions

SWAC football is nationally known for its competitive halftime band performances, which feature each school’s marching ensemble. Plan to stay through halftime at any SWAC game in Houston — it is a significant part of what you came for.

TSU’s most prominent NFL alumni include Hall of Famer Michael Strahan, who played for the New York Giants. For the full picture of Houston’s professional sports scene, see our Houston sports teams guide.

Save this: game-day checklist

  • Check each team’s schedule on its official athletics site; home games spread across September–November
  • For UH Big 12 conference games, buy tickets earlier than you think — demand is higher than pre-2023
  • Ride the METRORail Purple Line to UH games; the station is 100 yards from the southwest entrance to TDECU Stadium
  • At First Community Stadium, book lower-level midfield seats to use the historic sightlines
  • Confirm your venue before you go to a Rice game — some games move to Reliant Stadium
  • For TSU games at Thorne Stadium, buy only through Tixr.com — official TSU ticket outlet
  • TSU Homecoming is at Reliant Stadium, not Thorne Stadium — double-check before purchasing
  • Arrive 60–90 minutes before kickoff; tailgating spots and nearby parking fill quickly
  • At any SWAC game, stay for halftime
