Webster is the town NASA turned into a city. When the Manned Spacecraft Center was announced in 1961, Webster had only just incorporated; by 1970 its population had grown nearly sevenfold, from 329 to 2,231. Today this small city on I-45 packs in 22 hotels, a lakeside-style entertainment district called Flyway, Great Wolf Lodge's indoor water park and a dance hall that still teaches the two-step on weeknights.

Come for the rockets next door. Stay because Webster is the easiest place on the south side to turn a Space Center visit into a full day, or a whole weekend.

Before Webster was NASA's front porch, it was where Texas rice got a head start.

How we define Webster here: the City of Webster's limits along I-45 (the Gulf Freeway) and NASA Parkway, between Houston's Clear Lake neighborhood to the east and Friendswood and League City to the west and south. Two picks sit just over the line and are labelled that way: Space Center Houston, a few minutes east on NASA Parkway with a Houston address, and the Lone Star Flight Museum at Ellington Airport. For Clear Lake itself, see our guide to things to do in Clear Lake.

Three things even locals don't know

  • Webster helped start the Gulf Coast rice industry. In 1903, the Houston Chamber of Commerce invited Seito Saibara, a former president of Doshisha University in Kyoto and the first Christian member of Japan's parliament, to advise local farmers. His son Kiyoaki brought 300 pounds of Shinriki seed rice from Japan. The city's own history says it yielded 34 barrels an acre against 18 to 20 for the local rice, and calls it the real beginning of the Gulf Coast rice industry.
  • Webster started out as Websterville, a colony of English settlers founded by James W. Webster in 1879, with a sister settlement called Garden Town nearby. The name became plain Webster after 1892.
  • At Flyway you can carry your drink down the boardwalk. The district says visitors can take mixed drinks from any Flyway venue while they stroll the 1,720-foot boardwalk along Clear Creek.

Things to do in Webster, TX

1. Space Center Houston (just over the line)

The reason most people drive down I-45. Space Center Houston is the official visitor center for NASA Johnson Space Center, at 1601 E. NASA Parkway, a few minutes east of Webster. Its NASA Tram Tours are the only way for the public to get onto the 1,600-acre Johnson Space Center, where astronauts train and Mission Control runs.

Insider tip: the Historic Mission Control tram tour, where NASA ran the Apollo missions including the first lunar landing, is an add-on that has to be booked online with your general admission ticket. Book it before you go. Hours typically run from 9 or 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and parking is paid. Our Space Center Houston visitor guide has the full plan.

2. Galaxy Lights, the holiday light show at Space Center

Every winter Space Center Houston turns its grounds into Galaxy Lights, a space-themed light show that typically runs on select nights from mid-November into early January, 6 to 10 p.m. Allow about 90 minutes. It's mostly outdoors, tickets are timed by date and popular nights sell out, so buy ahead on the official Galaxy Lights page. Note that tram tours are closed during the evening event. More holiday ideas are in our Houston Christmas lights guide.

3. Spend a day at Great Wolf Lodge's indoor water park

Great Wolf Lodge opened its Texas Gulf Coast resort in Webster in August 2024, and it anchors the whole Flyway district. The indoor water park covers 92,000 square feet and is kept at 84 degrees all year, which makes it one of the few places near Houston where a January swim day is a perfectly normal idea.

You don't have to book a room. Great Wolf sells day passes and half-day passes (from 4 p.m. to close), and children 2 and under go free. Passes sell for specific dates, so book ahead on the Great Wolf Lodge Webster site. Our Great Wolf Lodge Houston guide covers suites and whether an overnight is worth it.

4. Walk Flyway Park and the Clear Creek boardwalk

Flyway Park is the city's six-acre front lawn for the district, at 1050 Great Wolf Way, directly in front of Great Wolf Lodge. Expect spray fountains, a lighted walking path, up-lit trees and a pavilion with multicolored columns that glows after dark. The city lists park hours as 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

From the park, the Flyway boardwalk runs 1,720 feet along Clear Creek, linking the restaurants and venues. Go at sunset: it's free, and it's why a Space Center day here doesn't have to end at 5 p.m.

5. Play pickleball at Chicken N Pickle

Chicken N Pickle, at 210 Blue Heron Drive in Flyway, has six indoor and two outdoor pickleball courts, plus a restaurant, several bars, a game yard with cornhole, ping pong, giant Jenga and Battleship, and a rooftop. You can reserve a court or just come for food. Property hours typically start at 7 a.m. daily and run to 10 p.m. most nights, later on weekends, and it's cashless. Check Chicken N Pickle Webster before you go.

6. Hit balls at Topgolf Webster

Topgolf Webster, at 21401 Gulf Freeway, has three floors and more than 100 all-weather bays, cooled by fans in summer and heated in winter, plus a rooftop terrace. Bays are priced per hour and fit up to six players, so a group is the way to do it. Mind the age policy: guests under 16 must be with someone 21 or older at all times, and under-18s need a 21+ adult after 9 p.m. Hours and rates are on the Topgolf Webster page.

7. Paddle or picnic at Challenger Seven Memorial Park

Harris County's Challenger Seven Memorial Park, at 2301 W. NASA Boulevard, is Webster's quiet counterweight to Flyway. It honors the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger, and its list of features is a nature-lover's checklist: nature trails, fishing, a boat launch and canoe access, a playground, picnic areas, pavilions and restrooms. The county lists hours as 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Bring a kayak, or walk the trails before the heat.

8. Find the Saibara rice story on NASA Parkway

A Texas historical marker on NASA Parkway (NASA Road 1) tells the Saibara family's story near the spot where their house once stood, and the city's small Saibara Pollinator Garden sits at 902 E. NASA Parkway, open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. It's a five-minute stop that changes the whole drive: before the rockets, this was rice country.

9. Cool off at Texas Avenue Park's splash pad

Texas Avenue Park, at 17100 Texas Avenue, is Webster's biggest city park at about 20 acres. Families come for the baseball-themed splash pad, which typically opens for the season on April 1 and runs 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. There's also a four-tenths-of-a-mile walking track, tennis courts, a covered basketball court, a playground and picnic tables with grills.

10. Celebrate the Fourth of July in Webster

The city calls its July Fourth Celebration its largest city-sponsored event, and it happens at Texas Avenue Park. Check the City of Webster closer to the date for times. For more options across the region, see our Houston Fourth of July guide.

11. Learn to two-step at Rowdy's Dance Hall

Rowdy's is a proper Texas dance hall with a Webster location, and it still teaches. Two-step lessons typically run 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays in Webster, and the calendar mixes themed nights such as Tejano and throwback nights. Check its calendar before you go.

12. Weekend barbecue brunch at Pappas Delta Blues

Pappas Delta Blues, at 19901 Gulf Freeway, is a Houston-family barbecue and Southern restaurant right on the freeway, which makes it the natural lunch stop on a Space Center day. It typically serves brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a weekday happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. Hours are on the Delta Blues Webster page.

13. Mexican seafood at Vida Mariscos

Vida Mariscos, at 210 Osprey Drive in Flyway, is a 13,000-square-foot Mexican seafood restaurant and sports bar from the group behind Los Cucos. Think oysters, ceviche and margaritas, with plenty of TVs, a stage for live music and a big patio over the Flyway grounds.

14. Dinner at Gauchos Do Sul

For a celebration, Gauchos Do Sul at 415 Royal Tern Way is Flyway's Brazilian steakhouse: gauchos carve fire-roasted meats tableside, there's a full salad bar, and some nights have live music. Book ahead for weekends.

15. Lone Star Flight Museum (nearby)

At Ellington Airport, just northwest of Webster, the Lone Star Flight Museum is the other half of Houston's air-and-space story, with historic aircraft on display (which planes are out varies by visit). It's typically open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon, with free parking. Prices and hours are on the museum's site.

Save this: a one-day Webster route

  1. 9:30 a.m. Arrive at Space Center Houston near opening, with your Historic Mission Control tram tour already booked.
  2. 1 p.m. Lunch at Pappas Delta Blues on the Gulf Freeway.
  3. 2:30 p.m. Stop at the Saibara Pollinator Garden on NASA Parkway, then walk the trails at Challenger Seven Memorial Park.
  4. 4 p.m. Kids: Great Wolf Lodge half-day pass. Grown-ups: book a Topgolf bay or a pickleball court at Chicken N Pickle.
  5. Sunset. Drink in hand, walk the Flyway boardwalk along Clear Creek.
  6. Dinner. Vida Mariscos for oysters and ceviche, or Gauchos Do Sul for a splurge.
  7. Wednesday or Friday night? Finish with a two-step lesson at Rowdy's.

Tips and best time to visit

  • Go in fall, winter or spring for the outdoor stops. The parks, boardwalk and tram tour are all outside; summer afternoons are hot, so save them for the water park.
  • Book Space Center tram tours and Galaxy Lights online. The Historic Mission Control tour must be bought with your ticket in advance, and holiday light nights sell out.
  • Use the half-day pass. Great Wolf's 4 p.m. half-day pass fits neatly after a morning at Space Center.
  • Stay over if you're doing Kemah or Galveston too. The city counts 22 hotels, and Webster's position midway between downtown Houston and Galveston makes it a good base.

Getting there and parking

Webster sits on I-45 (the Gulf Freeway) south of downtown Houston, with exits roughly 23 to 25 serving the city, and NASA Parkway (NASA Road 1) running east from the freeway past the Saibara garden toward Space Center Houston. Flyway is on the freeway's edge around Flyway Drive and Great Wolf Way.

Driving is the practical way to do this trip. Space Center Houston charges for parking (members park free), the Lone Star Flight Museum has free on-site parking, and the Flyway venues, city parks and Challenger Seven Memorial Park have their own lots.

Food nearby

Webster's own dining runs along the Gulf Freeway and through Flyway: barbecue at Delta Blues, Mexican seafood at Vida Mariscos and Brazilian steak at Gauchos Do Sul. For waterfront seafood a few minutes east, use our guide to the best restaurants in Clear Lake.
