- Houston Christmas Events: The Complete Holiday Guide
Houston Christmas events run from mid-November through early January and turn the city into the strongest holiday-events market in Texas. Houston Zoo Lights, the Galleria ice rink under the giant tree, Discovery Green's outdoor skating and its walk-through light show, Lights in the Heights, and the Uptown lights along Post Oak are the anchor events families plan around. This is the practical Houston Christmas events guide for the upcoming season.
Plan early — the marquee events sell out. Zoo Lights timed tickets sometimes book up two weeks ahead during peak weekends. Discovery Green skate rentals fill on December weekends. And Lights in the Heights has a three-hour walking window that gets crowded fast. The events below are listed in roughly chronological order for the season.
Downtown tree lighting at Avenida Houston (late November)
City Lights Downtown Holiday Magic opens the city's holiday season at The Plaza at Avenida Houston, next to the convention center and Discovery Green, with a grand tree lighting in late November. The 2026 run goes from November 20 through December 31 and builds out a dozen themed holiday villages across downtown, with live performances, Santa visits, and free holiday movies. Free, no tickets required for the activities, but the plaza gets full — arrive early.
The Uptown Houston District (the Galleria area along Post Oak Boulevard) runs its own display: more than 300 custom 20-foot trees, each wired with LEDs, lining about 1.7 miles of the Post Oak meridian from the West Loop to Richmond. The lights switch on in early November and stay lit through New Year's. The Uptown Holiday Lighting ceremony that traditionally went with them has been on and off — it was cancelled outright in 2023 before returning — so check Uptown Houston's site before planning an evening around the ceremony rather than the lights. Both displays are free. See the entertainment hub for the rolling event calendar.
Houston Zoo Lights (late November through early January)
Houston Zoo Lights at the Houston Zoo (6200 Hermann Park Drive) is the season's most-attended ticketed event. Open most nights from November 19, 2026 through January 3, 2027, closed December 9 and Christmas Eve, and — for the first time in the event's history — open on Christmas night. Hours run 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. (last entry 9:30 p.m.). Presented by TXU Energy, the display is built around the Gateway to Wonder animal lanterns, the new Wild Wonder Lights walk-through, Celestial Flight in the oaks, Candy Cane Lane, the s'mores stations at Campfire Canyon, and nightly snow in the Frosted Forest.
Tickets are flex-priced by date and start around $31, climbing on the peak nights in the two weeks before Christmas. Zoo members get 20 percent off and two preview nights of their own before the public opening. The most-skipped tip: timed tickets are required and weekend slots sell out well in advance during peak weeks. Book early in the week for shorter lines, and note the sensory-inclusive night if quieter crowds matter.
Children's Museum Houston holiday programs (December)
The Children's Museum Houston (1500 Binz Street) runs the most thorough holiday programming for the under-12 set. Polar Palooza, which runs December 19, 2026 through January 4, 2027, turns the museum into a snowy wonderland: multicultural holiday activities throughout, real-snow days in the courtyard, an All Aboard the Polar Express day on Tuesday, December 23, and a New Year's Noon Bash on December 31 with shortened 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. hours.
Free Family Night every Thursday (5 p.m. to 8 p.m., last admission 7 p.m., with a free online ticket reserved in advance and at least one child in the group) continues through December and is the best free family holiday outing in the city. Regular admission is $21.95 online, $23.95 at the door, for everyone age 1 and up.
Discovery Green tree lighting and outdoor ice rink (mid-November through early February)
Discovery Green at 1500 McKinney Street downtown runs the most consistently active holiday programming in Houston. The annual tree lighting falls the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The outdoor rink, officially Green Mountain Energy presents Ice at Discovery Green, opens the same weekend and runs from mid-November through early February. H-Town Holiday Lights, presented by PNC, turns the park's Brown Promenade into a free walk-through light show built by the Houston light artist H-Town Frankie, with animations synchronized to a playlist of Houston artists, running nightly 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Skate sessions run 75 minutes and cost $18 plus tax per person including skate rental, dropping to $9 plus tax on select Cheap Skate Mondays. Reservations open online; weekend evening slots fill one to two days ahead. The free concert series at Anheuser-Busch Stage runs Friday evenings through December. Free outdoor movie nights run Saturdays through December — bring blankets.
Ice at the Galleria (mid-November through January)
The Galleria's ICE at the Galleria, on the lower level beneath the 55-foot indoor Christmas tree, runs the most photographed indoor skating rink in the country. The tree carries roughly 450,000 lights and 5,000 ornaments. Skating sessions run $14-$18 with skate rental included. The rink operates year-round but the tree-and-rink combination only lights from mid-November through January.
The Galleria's Christmas tree-lighting falls the second Saturday in November and includes ice show performances and a fireworks finale. The mall extends its hours through Christmas — see the neighboring Upper Kirby area for parking strategy.
Lights in the Heights (early December)
Lights in the Heights is the city's largest neighborhood holiday walking event. Residents of the Woodland Heights subdivision spend weeks decorating, and on the second Saturday in December the streets close to cars for a walking tour. The 2026 edition is Saturday, December 12, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., centered on Highland and Omar between Studewood and Beauchamp. Free admission. Volunteer musicians play from porches along the route, and the crowd is large enough that parking near the route is a non-starter. Park along North Main or in the Heights commercial district and walk in.
Levy Park Holiday Festival (first weekend of December)
Levy Park at 3801 Eastside Street in Upper Kirby runs its annual Holiday Festival over one weekend in early December — December 5 and 6 in 2026, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Free admission, with food and gifts for sale. The vibe is small, walkable, daytime, and notably less crowded than the Discovery Green or Heights events. Levy Park publishes the activity lineup closer to the date, so check its events page rather than assuming last year's.
Other Christmas events worth a slot
- The Nutcracker Market at Reliant Center (November) — Houston Ballet's annual shopping market and one of the largest indoor holiday markets in the country; ticketed, and the proceeds fund the Ballet.
- Houston Symphony's Very Merry Pops at Jones Hall (December) — the orchestra's holiday concert series, family-friendly.
- The Nutcracker by Houston Ballet in the Brown Theater at the Wortham Theater Center (November 27 through December 28, 2026, the 10th anniversary of the Stanton Welch production) — the city's marquee holiday performance.
- Dickens on the Strand in Galveston (December 4-6, 2026, the 53rd annual) — Victorian-era street festival, costumed actors, parades. Ticketed: $20 adults and $13 for ages 7-12 in advance, free for ages 6 and under, half price if you turn up in Victorian costume, with the Friday-evening Fezziwig's Friday session free.
- Magical Winter Lights (mid-November through early January) — a walk-through lantern festival that has moved venues repeatedly since its Gulf Greyhound Park years in La Marque, so confirm this season's location with the organizer before you drive.
- Reliant Presents Deck the Hall, the Mayor's Holiday Tree Lighting and Concert, at Hermann Square at City Hall (Saturday, December 5, 2026) — free, with live music, family activities, food vendors, and fireworks over downtown.
Suburban Christmas events
The Houston suburbs run their own ambitious Christmas events. The Woodlands runs The Lighting of the Doves at Town Green Park the day after Thanksgiving (free, 6 p.m. ceremony, kids' workshops, ice rink open). Sugar Land runs Holiday Lights at Sugar Land Town Square — a free walking-tour light display that runs from late November through early January. Katy runs the Old Town Katy Christmas Stroll the first weekend in December, with carolers and a vintage tree-lighting on the railroad-themed downtown strip.
The Christmas Boat Lane Parade lights up Clear Lake on the second Saturday in December — December 12 in 2026, its 65th year, with fireworks and the Nassau Bay portion starting at 6 p.m. and the boats reaching Seabrook and the Kemah Boardwalk around 7:30. More than 60 decorated power and sailboats run the channel from South Shore Harbour Marina and the Nassau Bay Lagoon out toward Galveston Bay, and the parade has run since 1961, making it one of the longest-running holiday events in Texas.
Christmas event planning tips for Houston families
- Book Zoo Lights timed tickets well ahead for any weekend or December date, and check the closed dates (December 9 and Christmas Eve).
- Reserve ICE at Discovery Green skate sessions online before driving downtown — walk-ups during peak weekends often wait two hours.
- Lights in the Heights is best walked between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. — earlier is sparsely populated, later is overcrowded and food trucks sell out.
- Galleria Ice during the holiday tree window is busiest 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays; the 6 p.m. skate session is the quietest of the day.
- Reserve Free Family Night tickets at the Children's Museum online in advance rather than turning up cold, and remember last admission is 7 p.m.
- Bring a light jacket even on warm Houston December days. Discovery Green's ice rink runs at 32 degrees no matter the air temperature.
