5 out of 5 stars for Fish Tales Fly Shop....these guys are terrific, take the time to answer your questions and know their stuff. I've dealt with Rob in-store before when I needed help putting together a package as a gift for a friend...he was patient, knowledgable and super to deal with. Today I dealt with Sasha when buying a pair of waders and boots and his service was second to none...he took the time to explain to me the differences between the various waders, offered advice on the fit and gave me suggestions for future purchase...a great young man to deal with who knows what he is talking about. I've also had experience with their online store.....easy to use the platform and order fulfilment and shipping are outstanding, (within 2 days it was at my house). Don't hesitate to visit these guys...they're great!

I stopped in to Fish Tales first thing yesterday morning to purchase my first pair of waders and boots. I was greeted and helped out by Rob, and as a newcomer to fly fishing I couldn't have asked for a better experience. He helped size me up with the pair I had been eyeing, offered excellent insight, advice and a few tricks and tips. It was my third time visiting the shop and I will have a hard time going anywhere else for my angling needs. Excellent selection of gear, excellent fly selections and more than reasonable prices. Cannot recommend enough to newcomers or those looking to shop around.

We found this shop’s prices to be on the higher end, and when discussing alternative products, it felt like staff consistently pushed higher-end options while dismissing anything otherwise. We were hoping to see more price variation and options for different budgets. Unfortunately, the customer service also needs work. Most of the workers we interacted with came across as pretentious and uninterested in helping, which really takes away from the experience when you’re trying to get into a new hobby. Another review mentioned a worker being secretive about fishing spots in Fish Creek, and we had a similar experience. My husband asked a worker (wearing a yellow shirt on June 7, 2026) whether he had ever fished there, and the response was very dismissive. My husband even had to clarify, “I’m not asking for your spot, I’m just asking if you’ve fished there.” On top of that, when we walked in, there were four workers standing around and not a single person greeted us or asked if we needed help. We eventually had to approach someone ourselves, and even then, the interaction still felt dismissive. Overall, we’re very disappointed with this experience. Customer service like this can give small businesses a bad reputation and creates an unwelcoming environment, especially for people trying to enjoy a hobby and support local.

I am extremely disappointed with the service we received at Fish Tales Fly Shop today (Saturday, Feb 14 2026). We came in specifically to support a local business rather than buying online, and we were prepared to spend a significant amount of money. After selecting a pair of Patagonia waders and boots for myself, and Orvis waders and Simms boots for my son, our bill was already around $1,600. We were even planning to come back for a third set for my wife once we got started. As beginners to the Calgary fishing scene, I asked the salesperson for advice on some good spots to take the family. His response was incredibly dismissive. When I asked for a recommendation near, he simply said, “Fish Creek.” When I asked if he could point out a general area on a map, he told me, “It’s my secret spot, I can’t tell you.” This is exactly why people are moving away from local shops and buying online. When you spend $1,600 at a specialty store, you expect a basic level of mentorship and community support, not “secret spot” gatekeeping. There are plenty of fish in the river for everyone, and as a new angler, I was looking for professional guidance, not a brush-off. We decided not to complete our purchase and left. We will be taking our business to a different store tomorrow that actually values its customers and wants to help grow the local fishing community. I cannot recommend this place if you are looking for helpful service.

I got into fly fishing last November decided to start out with learning to tie flies. The staff here are so friendly, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful with my seemingly endless questions. They also have a few fly tying nights and seminars each month which are really informative and great for meeting new people. Go check out their massive selection of tying materials!
