- Conroe ISD Schools in The Woodlands, TX: A Parent's Guide
Roughly 90% of The Woodlands falls inside Conroe ISD, a Montgomery County school district that consistently ranks among the top public systems in the Houston region. The Woodlands' tree-canopied villages feed three large traditional high schools — The Woodlands High School, College Park High School, and Oak Ridge High School — plus the magnet-style Conroe ISD Academy of Science and Technology. Here's what every parent moving north of Downtown Houston should know.
The Three High Schools
The Woodlands High School (founded 1976) serves the eastern villages — Panther Creek, Grogan's Mill, Cochran's Crossing, and Alden Bridge. Its 11th and 12th graders share the Woodlands Stadium with neighboring College Park, and 'HOWDY!' has been the student section's hometown chant since the Highlanders won their first state football title in 1980.
College Park High School (2005) draws from Sterling Ridge, Indian Springs, and parts of Alden Bridge. Oak Ridge High School covers the southern edge of the community plus parts of Spring and Imperial Oaks. All three offer a deep AP catalog, dual-credit options through Lone Star College, and competitive athletics — Woodlands and College Park swim and golf programs frequently send athletes to the state meet.
Academy of Science and Technology
The Conroe ISD Academy of Science and Technology is a magnet program housed inside The Woodlands College Park High School. Around 100 students per grade qualify through a competitive application process for an accelerated STEM curriculum that includes research methods, advanced math, and dual-enrollment with Lone Star and Sam Houston State University. Graduates routinely place at Texas A&M, UT-Austin, and Rice.
Elementary and Junior High Feeders
Each Woodlands village has its own elementary school and a clear junior high feeder. McCullough, Knox, Mitchell, and Tough are the four junior highs covering the community, and parents should confirm zoning before buying — village boundaries and school boundaries don't always line up. Our Woodlands real estate guide covers the village-by-village context.
Private and Charter Options
The John Cooper School, a non-denominational independent school in Sterling Ridge, runs PK-12 with about 1,300 students and tuition north of $30,000. The Woodlands Christian Academy and Covenant Christian School cover the faith-based market. For charters, iSchool High of Lone Star College and a handful of Harmony Public Schools campuses serve families across the Houston Metro.
Tomball ISD and Magnolia ISD Edges
Creekside Park, in Harris County south of FM 2920, draws from Tomball ISD — Tomball Memorial High School and Creekside Park Junior High specifically. A small slice of homes on the western edge of Sterling Ridge falls inside Magnolia ISD. Tomball is highly rated and Magnolia is solid; if you're shopping these zones, look at the elementary school first since high school zoning shifts more frequently.
Sports, Music, and Friday Nights
Conroe ISD competes in UIL Class 6A, the largest division in Texas high school sports. Friday-night football at Woodlands Stadium and Moorhead Stadium in Conroe are full-throttle community events from late August through November. The Woodlands High School marching band has earned multiple state finalist appearances, and the choir programs at all three high schools regularly place at state UIL competitions.
