Best Tacos in Downtown Houston: 9 Taquerias and Trucks

Date Published

Tacos downtown Houston: a food truck and three taco shells against a night city skyline

Downtown Houston has more taco options than most visitors expect, spread across the central business district and adjacent EaDo. You can eat a $1.75 flour taco at 5 a.m. near the stadiums, a nixtamal-tortilla zanahoria taco in a lunchtime food hall, or quesabirria with consommé past midnight on Milam Street—all without a car.

This guide covers nine verified spots. Seven sit inside the downtown core (bounded roughly by I-10 to the north, US-59 to the south, and I-45 to the east), and two are in EaDo, the walkable neighborhood just east of Discovery Green that shares a continuous sidewalk grid with the business district. Brothers Taco House and Cobo’s in EaDo are roughly a ten-minute walk from the center of downtown.

How we chose

Every spot on this list was confirmed currently open via its own official website or official social page as of October 2026. The focus is taquerias and trucks—places where tacos are the main event, not a footnote on a larger menu. The one full-service exception is Xochi, which earned its place because no other restaurant within these boundaries makes tacos with the same depth of Oaxacan technique.

Hours change. Several of these are trucks or counter spots with no reservations. Check the official site or call before you go, especially on Mondays when several are closed.

The quick list

  • Earliest open: Brothers Taco House, 5 a.m. Monday–Friday.
  • Best weekday lunch in the tunnel: Tacos A Go Go at One Shell Plaza.
  • Best birria: Space City Birria on Milam Street, People’s Choice in the Traditional Taco category at the 2026 Top Taco competition.
  • Best late night: La Calle Tacos until 3 a.m. Thursday–Friday; Taqueria Sol de Arceli until 2 a.m. Thursday–Saturday.
  • Best upscale Oaxacan: Xochi at the Marriott Marquis.
  • Best before a game: Cobo’s, steps from Daikin Park and Shell Energy Stadium.

Space City Birria — 415 Milam St, Downtown

Space City Birria Tacos and More won People’s Choice in the Traditional Taco category at the 2026 Top Taco competition, held at POST Houston. The dish that took it: quesabirria, two corn tortillas folded around slow-braised beef and melted cheese, served with a ramekin of consommé for dipping. Order the Orbit Duo—two quesabirrias plus consommé—then add the al pastor street tacos to compare styles.

Hours: Monday–Wednesday 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Thursday 11 a.m.–11 p.m., Friday 11 a.m.–3 a.m., Sunday noon–9 p.m.; Saturday hours not confirmed—check the official site.

Insider tip: Thursday evening is the sweet spot on weekdays: late kitchen, offices clearing out.

Papalo Taqueria — 712 Main St (The Finn), Downtown · Mon–Sat 8 a.m.–6 p.m.

Papalo is a counter-service taqueria tucked into the back corner of The Finn food hall on Main Street. The founders nixtamalize their own corn—cooking dried maiz in an alkaline solution to unlock nutrients and deepen flavor—and griddle fresh tortillas all day. That process is what put the zanahoria taco at No. 7 on Texas Monthly’s list of the 50 best tacos in Texas. The taco: carrots confited in olive and vegetable oil, cut lengthwise, set in a corn tortilla, and topped with a pepita-and-queso-fresco salsa. The Michelin Guide calls the chicharrón with pumpkin seed vinaigrette an “absolute stunner.” Both are worth ordering.

Hours: Monday–Saturday 8 a.m.–6 p.m., closed Sunday.

Insider tip: Walk past the main food-hall entrance and keep going—Papalo is in the back.

La Calle Tacos — 909 Franklin St, Downtown · open daily, late night Thu–Sat

La Calle brings Mexico City street food downtown, and the Franklin Street location is open nearly around the clock on weekends. The kitchen focuses on made-to-order street food. Order the suadero (a slow-cooked brisket cut popular in Mexico City taquerias) or al pastor on corn tortillas, with a michelada. Breakfast tacos start at 7 a.m. on weekdays. A second La Calle location at 401 Gray Street (near Bagby Park, also 77002) offers the same menu.

Hours: Monday–Wednesday 7 a.m.–2 a.m., Thursday–Friday 7 a.m.–3 a.m., Saturday 9 a.m.–3 a.m., Sunday 9 a.m.–2 a.m.

Tacos A Go Go — 910 Louisiana St (One Shell Plaza tunnel), Downtown · weekdays only

This weekday-only counter is inside Houston’s downtown tunnel system, in the underground concourse below One Shell Plaza. Tacos A Go Go runs multiple Houston locations; this one has been feeding the downtown workforce for years. The Chori-Mex breakfast taco—chorizo, potato, jalapeños, refried black beans, and habanero queso blanco—is the order. Migas and a plain potato-and-egg round out the morning.

Hours: Monday–Friday 7 a.m.–3 p.m., closed weekends.

Insider tip: Tunnel-connected from several buildings downtown. If you work in the area, you may not need to step outside.

Taqueria Sol de Arceli — 400 Main St, Downtown · Thu–Sun evenings

A street taco truck at a fixed address on Main Street in the central business district. Sol de Arceli runs entirely on night-owl hours: Thursday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m., and Sunday from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. No website; confirmed open via third-party listings with a consistent address record and DoorDash presence. Order the cabeza and lengua on corn tortillas.

Hours: Thursday–Saturday 7 p.m.–2 a.m., Sunday 6 p.m.–3 a.m., closed Monday–Wednesday.

Tako Loko — 813 Congress St (Market Square area), Downtown · evenings

Tako Loko is a Monterrey-style taco truck parked near Market Square Park, described by its owner on Instagram as “straight from Monterrey.” The truck runs evenings and is available on DoorDash. Corn tortillas are standard; the arrachera and al pastor are the consistent options. Order three or four to work through the menu—the price per taco stays reasonable.

Hours: Typically 6 p.m.–2:40 a.m.; confirm current nights on Instagram at @tako_loko_htx.

Xochi — 1777 Walker St (Marriott Marquis), Downtown

Xochi is Chef Hugo Ortega’s Oaxacan restaurant in the lobby of the Marriott Marquis Houston and the most polished taco stop within these boundaries. The kitchen nixtamalizes its own masa, makes quesillo (Oaxacan string cheese) in-house, and fires tacos in a wood oven. Notable orders: Tacos de Pato (confit duck in a crispy shell), Tacos de Arrachera (grilled beef with roasted poblano, refried beans, and salsa mexicana). It is the most expensive option on this list. Sunday brunch adds a tamale spread worth knowing about.

Hours: Monday–Thursday 11:30 a.m.–9:30 p.m., Friday–Saturday 11:30 a.m.–10:30 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Reservations recommended for dinner.

Brothers Taco House — 1604 Emancipation Ave, EaDo · early mornings

Brothers Taco House has operated at the same EaDo address since 2003 and is one of the few spots in the area open before sunrise on weekdays. Flour tortillas are made by hand every morning before the first customer. Most tacos cost under $2: chorizo and egg, carne guisada, rajas con queso, papas a la mexicana. On weekends only: barbacoa. For more on the neighborhood, see living in EaDo.

Hours: Monday–Friday 5 a.m.–3 p.m., Saturday 6 a.m.–1 p.m., Sunday 7 a.m.–1 p.m.

Cobo’s — 2012 Rusk St, EaDo · Tuesday–Sunday

Cobo’s sits steps from Daikin Park and Shell Energy Stadium, which makes it the natural stop before or after a Houston Astros game. The kitchen fuses Houston BBQ with Mexican street food: slow-braised birria tacos served with consommé, beef street tacos, and smoked brisket. The full bar runs cocktails and craft beer. Hours extend later on game nights—call ahead to confirm.

Hours: Tuesday–Thursday 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Friday–Saturday 11 a.m.–midnight, Sunday 11 a.m.–10 p.m., closed Monday.
