Best Seafood in Montrose, Houston: Oysters, Crawfish and Gulf Fish

Date Published

Seafood in Montrose illustration: crawfish tray, oysters on ice and a fish sign at night

The best seafood in Montrose, Houston, comes from eight spots between Allen Parkway and US 59. For oysters, go to Clark's Oyster Bar on Montrose Boulevard or Little's Oyster Bar on South Shepherd Drive. For Gulf Coast cooking like gumbo, redfish and crab, go to Eugene's Gulf Coast Cuisine on Welch Street, and for crawfish at almost any hour, BB's Tex-Orleans on Westheimer Road.

The line to remember: in Montrose you can start on Texas oysters at 3 p.m. and finish a five-pound crawfish mound at 3 a.m. Clark's happy hour starts at 3 p.m. on weekdays, and BB's Tex-Orleans stays open until 3 a.m. Sunday to Wednesday and 4 a.m. Thursday to Saturday.

Menus, hours and prices change. Treat everything below as "typically" and check the official site before you go.

What counts as Montrose in this guide?

We use the same boundaries as our other Montrose guides: Allen Parkway and Buffalo Bayou on the north, Spur 527 and Bagby Street on the east, US 59 (I-69) on the south, and Shepherd Drive on the west. Two picks sit near the western edge. Little's Oyster Bar is on South Shepherd Drive and calls Montrose home on its website. Eugene's Gulf Coast Cuisine describes itself as being in the River Oaks area, but its Welch Street address is just east of Shepherd, inside our lines.

That leaves out Upper Kirby and River Oaks (west of Shepherd), Midtown (east of Spur 527) and the Museum District (south of US 59). For those, see our citywide best seafood restaurants in Houston.

How we chose

We kept only restaurants inside those boundaries whose own website showed a current address, posted hours and real seafood on the menu: oysters, Gulf fish, shrimp, crab or crawfish. Places we could only confirm on review sites, or whose official sites were down, were left out.

The quick list

  • Best all-round oyster bar: Clark's Oyster Bar, with Texas and East Coast oysters side by side.

  • Best raw fish that isn't an oyster: Uchi Houston.

Where to get oysters in Montrose

Montrose has three restaurants where oysters are the reason to go: Clark's, Little's and Eugene's.

1. Clark's Oyster Bar

3807 Montrose Blvd · oyster bar · dinner daily from 4 p.m.

Clark's Oyster Bar on Montrose Boulevard opened in fall 2023 in a former auto shop near the Menil Collection. Clark's says it is the third and largest location of the oyster bar, part of Austin's MML Hospitality family. Lunch typically runs Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., brunch Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and dinner every day from 4 p.m.

I didn't know that: the oyster list isn't all East Coast. A recent Clark's dinner menu listed three Texas oysters, Blackjack Point, Matagorda Pearl and Mermaid Tears, next to oysters from Prince Edward Island, Maine and Massachusetts, at $4.25 each.

What to order: Gulf red snapper ceviche, oven-roasted Gulf oysters with spinach and bacon breadcrumbs, Texas redfish on the half shell, or the lobster roll. The Plateau de Fruits de Mer, a tower of oysters, lobster, prawns, crudo and ceviche, feeds a table.

Happy hour: Monday to Friday, 3 to 5 p.m., with 50 cents off oysters, $5 oyster shooters and half-price martinis and burgers.

Why it's here: the widest oyster list we found in Montrose.

2. Little's Oyster Bar

3001 S Shepherd Dr · oyster bar · Tuesday to Saturday dinner

Little's Oyster Bar on South Shepherd Drive is the first chef-driven concept from the Pappas Restaurants group, according to its website. Expect rotating oysters and shellfish, lobster, caviar service and a seasonal menu. Dinner typically runs Tuesday to Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. It is closed Sunday and Monday.

I didn't know that: the vintage sign out front is restored on purpose. Little's says it nods to the building's opening in 1987 as Little Pappas Seafood House.

What to order: dressed oysters and caviar with a martini or Champagne.

Happy hour: Social Hour runs Tuesday to Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m., at the bar only. The menu typically lists $2 Atlantic oysters, ceviche and broiled oysters.

Why it's here: it's Montrose's dress-up oyster bar, and at Social Hour it's also one of the cheapest.

3. Eugene's Gulf Coast Cuisine

1985 Welch St · Gulf Coast seafood · lunch and dinner daily

Eugene's Gulf Coast Cuisine on Welch Street is run by the Teas family, which used to run Danton's Gulf Coast Seafood. Lunch typically runs Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and dinner from 4 to 10 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday it opens at 11 a.m., with brunch and lunch until 3 p.m. and dinner until 10 p.m. Saturday and 9 p.m. Sunday.

I didn't know that: the restaurant is named for the owner's father, Dr. Merwyn Eugene Teas. Two dishes on the menu are named after the neighborhood: baked Oysters Montrose and Shrimp and Grits Montrose.

What to order: the seafood gumbo, a dark roux with shrimp, crab claw meat and oysters, then crab Balinese or the stuffed redfish. Ask about the daily fish, which Eugene's says can include red snapper, ling, mahi and grouper.

Happy hour: at the oyster bar only, typically Monday to Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m., with cheap raw Gulf oysters and peel-and-eat shrimp.

Why it's here: it is the closest thing in Montrose to a Galveston seafood house, without the drive.

The Pit Room on Richmond Avenue is a barbecue joint, but its outdoor bar next door, The Patio, serves crawfish in season. The restaurant serves breakfast tacos from 7 a.m. and barbecue from 11 a.m. The Patio typically opens at 11 a.m. and stays open late, with drinks happy hour Monday to Friday from 2 to 7 p.m. The Pit Room doesn't post crawfish prices or dates online, so check its social pages in spring.

What to order: a tray of crawfish on the patio, with brisket from the counter on the side.

Why it's here: crawfish and brisket at the same picnic table. For more smoked meat, see our best BBQ in Montrose.

I didn't know that: Bludorn's Oysters Everyway lets you order oysters five ways: raw, dressed, smoked, fried or roasted with watercress, bacon and spinach.

What to order: Oysters Everyway, the seafood tower, the crab rice with crab étouffée, or the blackened red snapper.

Why it's here: Montrose's most elegant seafood rice.

Save this: a Montrose oyster crawl

This route works Tuesday to Thursday, when all three happy hours overlap. Don't drive between stops after drinking. Use a rideshare or a designated driver.

  2. 4:30 p.m., Eugene's Gulf Coast Cuisine: a cup of seafood gumbo and raw Gulf oysters at the oyster bar.
  3. 5:30 p.m., Little's Oyster Bar: one last round of Atlantic oysters at the bar before Social Hour ends at 6.
  4. Late, BB's Tex-Orleans: if you're still hungry after midnight, a pound of crawfish on Westheimer.
