- Best Patios in Downtown Houston: 10 Restaurants and Bars Outside
The best patio restaurants and bars in Downtown Houston are Batanga on Market Square, Barnaby's Cafe on Congress Street, The Grove and Grove Market & Provisions in Discovery Green, Osso & Kristalla on Texas Avenue and Z on 23, a rooftop bar 23 floors up. For dogs, Barnaby's Cafe Downtown is the standout: its patio welcomes pets and it has a puppy menu. For shade, the lakeside deck and veranda at Grove Market & Provisions in Discovery Green is the easiest place to sit outside on a hot afternoon.
Downtown is better outdoors than its reputation. Your dog can order off a menu on Congress Street, you can drink a margarita on a 3,600-square-foot brick patio built onto an 1880s saloon, and you can walk through a farm on the roof of an old post office. Here's the shortlist we'd send a friend.
What counts as Downtown Houston here?
We're using the area inside the freeway ring: I-45 on the west and south, I-10 on the north and I-69 (US 59) on the east. That covers Market Square, Main Street, GreenStreet, Discovery Green, the convention and stadium blocks and POST Houston on the north edge. EaDo and Midtown are left out. For the bigger picture, start with our Downtown Houston area guide.
The quick list
- Brick patio and live music: Batanga, 3,600 square feet on Market Square.
- Best for dogs: Barnaby's Cafe Downtown, with a puppy menu and free water bowls.
- Best shade: Grove Market & Provisions, with a lakeside deck and shaded veranda in Discovery Green.
- Best view: Z on 23, an open-air rooftop bar on the 23rd floor.
- Most surprising: POST Houston's Skylawn, a five-acre rooftop park with a one-acre farm.
- Before an Astros game: Osso & Kristalla, from the team's owner.
- Before a convention or a Rockets game: Pappasito's Cantina on Lamar Street.
- Best happy hour outside: MKT Bar's sidewalk seats at Phoenicia.
How we chose
Every pick had to be operating, inside the boundary above, and have outdoor seating confirmed by an official source. For The Grove and McCormick & Schmick's, that source is the Downtown Houston district's official dining directory, which tags them "Patio" and "Pet Friendly"; we say so in each entry.
We call a place dog-friendly only when the venue or the district directory says so, and we mention shade only where an official source does. Hours change, so read every schedule here as "typically" and check the official site before you go.
Market Square and the Historic District
The oldest corner of downtown has the city's best brick-and-string-light patios.
Batanga
908 Congress St, at Travis · tapas patio · closed Mondays
Batanga turned an 1880s saloon into a tapas restaurant, and its bricked patio is 3,600 square feet, which the restaurant calls one of the largest in Downtown Houston. Market Square Park is directly across Travis Street and the historic clock tower stands right outside, under the patio's string lights. On Friday and Saturday nights, live Latin music plays from the indoor stage out onto the patio.
Order: tapas for the table and a bottle of wine on a Sunday, when Batanga typically takes 50% off select bottles and serves brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Good to know: Batanga is typically open Tuesday to Thursday 4 to 9 p.m., Friday 4 p.m. to midnight, Saturday 11 a.m. to midnight and Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., with happy hour Tuesday to Friday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Its site doesn't mention dogs, so ask first. Batanga's parking notes say city street parking is free after 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday and all day Sunday; read the signs anyway. Details at batangahouston.com.
Barnaby's Cafe Downtown
801 Congress St · lunch patio · dogs welcome
Barnaby's Cafe Downtown is our pick for a patio lunch with a dog in Downtown Houston. Every Barnaby's location has an outdoor patio that welcomes pets, and the cafe describes itself as "Dog Patio Compliant under Texas Health and Safety Code." There's a puppy menu of ground beef, sliced chicken or scrambled eggs over brown rice, plus doggie ice cream, and a bowl of water is free.
Order: a burger for you and the chicken and rice for the dog. Barnaby's is BYOB for beer and wine, with no corkage fee.
Good to know: the downtown cafe is typically open for lunch Monday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Patio rules are simple: leashes on, dogs stay off tables, chairs and laps, and dogs eat from their own bowl, not your plate. Pair lunch with a stroll through Market Square Park across the street.
Discovery Green and the convention district
Downtown's 12-acre park is our favorite place to eat outside with a dog. Discovery Green says the land was just two large parking lots before the park opened in April 2008.
Grove Market & Provisions
1600 McKinney St, in Discovery Green · lakeside deck · open daily
Grove Market & Provisions is the casual counter on the south shore of Kinder Lake. Discovery Green describes tables on a lakeside deck and a shaded veranda, which makes it the easiest shady seat downtown on a warm afternoon. The district's directory tags it patio and pet friendly.
Order: burgers, tacos and Texas hot dogs, or salads and sandwiches to carry to the lawn. Discovery Green's rules let you enjoy an adult beverage bought here or at The Grove, but outside alcohol isn't allowed in the park.
Good to know: it's run by the same Schiller Del Grande Restaurant Group as The Grove. Check hours at thelakehousehouston.com before you go.
The Grove
1611 Lamar St, in Discovery Green · sit-down restaurant · closed Sundays
The Grove, at the south end of Discovery Green, has been the park's sit-down restaurant since it opened in January 2008. It's run by the Schiller Del Grande Restaurant Group, the team behind the Houston classic Cafe Annie. The district's directory tags it patio and pet friendly.
Do: book a weekday lunch, then walk the park. The Grove's own site lists lunch Monday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and dinner Tuesday to Saturday from 5 p.m. Check thegrovehouston.com before you go, since the hours are short.
Pappasito's Cantina Downtown/Avenida
1600 Lamar St, connected to the Hilton Americas-Houston · Tex-Mex · open daily
Pappasito's Cantina Downtown/Avenida sits steps from Discovery Green, the George R. Brown Convention Center, Toyota Center and Daikin Park. Pappasito's, the Pappas family's Tex-Mex kitchen, was founded in 1983; this location lists a semi-private space called The Patio, and the district's directory tags it patio and pet friendly.
Order: fajitas, guacamole and a margarita. It's typically open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Details at pappasitos.com. Heading to a show? See our Toyota Center guide.
MKT Bar at Phoenicia
1001 Austin St, at One Park Place · sidewalk tables · open daily
MKT Bar, short for Market Bar, is the gastropub inside Phoenicia Specialty Foods' downtown market, a block from Discovery Green. It has outdoor sidewalk seating, and its weekday happy hour is one of the better-value outdoor drinks downtown.
Order: the cocktail of the day or a local draught at happy hour (typically Monday to Friday, 4 to 6 p.m.), or come Thursday for Steak Night. Weekend brunch typically runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Insider tip: MKT Bar says parking in the One Park Place garage, entered from McKinney Street, is free. Details at mktbar.com.
Near Daikin Park and GreenStreet
Osso & Kristalla
1515 Texas Ave · Italian · open daily
Osso & Kristalla is the casual Italian restaurant from Houston Astros owner Jim Crane, who named his restaurants after his three children. It has an outdoor patio, and it calls itself "your Houston Astros Headquarters," which makes it a natural pre-game stop for Daikin Park.
Order: a wood-fired pizza. Happy hour typically runs Tuesday to Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. and all day Monday, and weekend brunch runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Details at ossoandkristalla.com.
McCormick & Schmick's
1201 Fannin St, GreenStreet · seafood · open daily
McCormick & Schmick's Downtown Houston is the seafood house at GreenStreet, and the district's directory tags it patio and pet friendly.
Order: oysters from the raw bar or the miso-glazed Chilean sea bass. Happy hour typically runs Monday to Friday from 3:30 to 7 p.m. and weekends from 3 to 5 p.m. Check mccormickandschmicks.com for current specials.
Up on the roof
Z on 23
Le Méridien Houston Downtown, 1121 Walker St · rooftop bar · 21 and up
Z on 23 bills itself as Houston's highest open-air rooftop bar, 23 floors above downtown on top of Le Méridien. It's the patio to save for after sunset. Its "Golden Hour" runs daily from 3 to 7 p.m. with a $10 house cocktail called the Key to the Rooftop.
Good to know: Z on 23's event nights are 21 and up with a valid photo ID and an enforced dress code, and it encourages table reservations Thursday to Sunday. Rooftop hours are typically 3 p.m. to midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Details at zon23rooftop.com. For more skyline drinks, see our rooftop bars guide.
POST Houston Skylawn
401 Franklin St · rooftop park and farm · no pets
POST Houston is the former Barbara Jordan Post Office, and its roof, the Skylawn, is a five-acre rooftop park with a one-acre organic farm, Skyfarm, run by Blackwood Educational Land Institute. POST says the roof mixes plants and reflective surfaces to cut urban heat. Downstairs are the POST Market food hall and El Tiempo Cantina.
Good to know: POST's building rules allow no pets except service animals, and alcohol only in authorized spaces, so leave the dog at home. The Skylawn is free and open to the public daily, typically until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, though parts of it can close for special events. Check posthtx.com before you go, especially on a 713 Music Hall show night.
Is Discovery Green good for dogs?
Yes. Discovery Green has two fenced dog runs near Lamar Street: the Kinder Large Dog Run and the Harriet and Joe Foster Small Dog Run, with crushed gravel, fountains and seating. Dogs taller than 15 inches must use the large run, there's a 45-minute limit per dog, and dogs need current license and vaccination tags. Leashes are required everywhere else in the park. Our Discovery Green guide has the rest.
