- Date Night in Rice Village: 10 Dinners, Drinks and a Walk
For a date night in Rice Village, book dinner at Navy Blue (Gulf seafood), Hamsa (modern Israeli) or D’Amico’s Italian Market Cafe (Sicilian), then walk to a nightcap at Under the Volcano or Upstairs at Hungry’s, or to live blues at The Big Easy. Every pick below sits inside the same few blocks of Houston’s Rice Village, so you can park once and do the whole night on foot.
That’s the real romance of this neighborhood. Rice Village is the rare Houston date where the car stays put: dinner, a drink, a bookstore and a late scoop of ice cream are all a few minutes’ walk apart under the oaks.
Where does Rice Village start and stop?
For this guide, Rice Village means the blocks between Kirby Drive on the west and Greenbriar Drive on the east, from Bissonnet Street on the north down to Times Boulevard on the south. That takes in the University Boulevard and Morningside Drive dining strip, the shopping streets around Amherst and Kelvin, and the Bissonnet block that Under the Volcano and Murder by the Book both describe as “between Kirby and Greenbriar.” Everything below is inside those lines. For the wider area, see our Rice Village and West U guide.
The quick list
- For the big night: Navy Blue, Aaron Bludorn’s Gulf Coast seafood restaurant on Times Boulevard.
- For sharing everything: Hamsa, where the meal starts with a spread of salatim.
- For red sauce and candlelight energy: D’Amico’s Italian Market Cafe.
- For oysters and a martini: Hudson House’s weekday happy hour.
- For wine people: Sixty Vines, with 60 wines on tap.
- For a nightcap under the trees: Upstairs at Hungry’s second-floor terrace.
- For the story: Under the Volcano, a Day of the Dead bar in a yellow house since 1989.
- For dancing: The Big Easy, live blues Wednesday to Saturday.
- For the walk: Murder by the Book, then ice cream at Van Leeuwen.
How we chose
We picked places where a table for two feels like a night out, not just a meal, and where you can walk to the next stop. Every pick had to sit inside our Rice Village boundaries and show a current address and hours on its own official website when we checked in November 2026. We left out places we couldn’t confirm on an official site and places that have closed.
Hours change. Treat every schedule below as “typically,” and check the venue’s site before you go, especially early in the week.
Dinner: the main event
1. Navy Blue
2445 Times Blvd · modern American seafood · dinner nightly
Navy Blue is chef Aaron Bludorn’s Rice Village seafood restaurant, and it describes itself as a tribute to the Texas Gulf Coast. This is the anniversary booking on this list: a polished room, a serious bar with its own martini program, and a menu built around Gulf fish and crudo. Dinner typically starts at 4 p.m. on weeknights and 5 p.m. on weekends.
Insider tip: the bar runs an Oyster Hour, typically 2 to 5 p.m. every day, with discounted oysters and martinis, bar seating only. Slide in early for a dozen and a drink, then decide whether to stay for dinner. Reserve on Navy Blue’s site.
2. Hamsa
5555 Morningside Dr · modern Israeli · Tuesday to Sunday
Hamsa, from Sof Hospitality, opened in Rice Village in May 2022 with a menu of elevated Middle Eastern classics, heavy on vegetables and spice. The restaurant says it wants guests to gather around the table: start with a spread of salatim (small salads and dips), then move through small plates together. That makes it one of the best date tables in the neighborhood if you like to share and talk.
Hamsa is typically open Tuesday to Sunday, with dinner until 9:30 p.m. midweek and 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
3. D’Amico’s Italian Market Cafe
5510 Morningside Dr · Sicilian Italian · open daily
D’Amico’s Italian Market Cafe cooks Northern and Southern Sicilian food on Morningside Drive: house-made pasta, wood-fired pizza and seafood. Order the Crab Claws D’Amico, served in a spicy lemon butter sauce, and the crawfish ravioli.
I didn’t know that: D’Amico’s is also a working Italian deli and imported-food market. On your way out, pick up a bottle of olive oil or a bag of fresh pasta and you’ve got next weekend’s date night in at home. Reservations are on Resy via D’Amico’s site.
4. Hudson House
2414 University Blvd · seafood · open daily
Hudson House is the low-key choice: a seafood restaurant on University Boulevard where you can be in and out before a show or settle in for the evening. The best date move is the weekday happy hour, typically 3 to 6 p.m. at the bar only, with half-price martinis and wine by the glass plus discounted East Coast oysters and cheeseburgers.
5. Sixty Vines
2540 University Blvd at Kirby Dr · wine bar and restaurant · open daily
Sixty Vines is the two-story wine restaurant at the corner of University Boulevard and Kirby Drive. It pours 60 wines on tap, so you can taste your way around Napa, the Loire and Argentina by the glass. The food is built for sharing: wood-fired pizzas, a dedicated charcuterie bar and plates made to pair. Ask for the greenhouse patio.
Best for: couples who want the wine to be the main event. Compare it with the rest of our best wine bars in Houston.
After dinner: drinks, music and dessert
6. Upstairs at Hungry’s
2356 Rice Blvd, 2nd floor · cocktail lounge and terrace
Upstairs Bar & Lounge sits above Hungry’s on Rice Boulevard and calls itself “perched in the oak trees,” which is exactly how its big second-floor terrace feels after dark. Expect handcrafted cocktails and light bites like wood-fired pizza. It typically closes at 9 or 10 p.m., so make it your early nightcap, or come for happy hour, typically 3 to 6 p.m. daily.
7. Under the Volcano
2349 Bissonnet St · cocktail bar · open late daily
Under the Volcano has poured drinks on Bissonnet since 1989. It’s a Day of the Dead–themed neighborhood bar with two tropical patios, decor bought in Mexico, and a name borrowed from Malcolm Lowry’s classic novel. The bar says it was Houston’s first craft cocktail bar and still makes drinks only with fresh-squeezed juice and fresh herbs: try the Strawberry Basil Margarita, the Paloma or the Añejo Old Fashioned.
I didn’t know that: the funky yellow house was an ice house in the 1940s and later Munchies Café before it became the Volcano. It’s typically open until 1 a.m., and 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, with live music most Wednesdays at 8 p.m. (a small donation at the door) and an old-time jam session on the second and fourth Sunday evenings.
8. The Big Easy Social and Pleasure Club
5731 Kirby Dr · live blues bar · Wednesday to Saturday
If your idea of a date ends on a dance floor, go to The Big Easy on Kirby Drive. It’s a blues bar that sets out to bring the spirit of New Orleans to Houston. It’s typically open Wednesday to Saturday from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m., with a blues jam or a live band most of those nights. Check the music calendar before you go, because cover and lineup change by night.
9. Van Leeuwen Ice Cream
2565 Amherst St · ice cream · open daily until midnight
Van Leeuwen’s Rice Village scoop shop is typically open every day from 11 a.m. to midnight, which makes it the last stop that’s still open when everything else on Amherst has gone dark. It serves dairy and vegan ice cream, plus sundaes, milkshakes and cookie sandwiches. Two cones, one walk back to the car. More scoops in our best ice cream in Houston.
Before dinner: the walk
10. Murder by the Book
2342 Bissonnet St · mystery bookstore · open daily
Murder by the Book is a mystery and crime fiction bookstore on Bissonnet, and browsing it together is a great opening act: pick a paperback for each other and swap over dinner. It’s typically open Monday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Insider tip: the store hosts frequent author events, often at 6:30 p.m. on weeknights, and stays open late on those nights. Catch a reading, then walk to dinner. The store asks visitors not to park behind the store, which is reserved for employees and authors; for big events it points to street parking on Morningside Drive and South Boulevard. Find more shops like it in our best independent bookstores in Houston.
