Best Burgers in Houston: Smash, Icehouse, Steakhouse and Classics

Date Published

Best burgers in Houston illustration: a stacked cheeseburger and fries glowing beneath the downtown skyline at night

Houston doesn't argue about whether it has great burgers. It argues about which kind. A thin smash burger with lacy, crackling edges. A cheeseburger and a cold beer at a bar that stays open late. A Prime-beef patty from a steakhouse family, or a wild game blend of elk, bison and ribeye. A cheap classic at a shack by the freeway, eaten at a picnic table.

This is the shortlist we'd hand a friend who asks where to get a great burger in Houston. It's sorted by style, so you can pick your mood first and your neighborhood second.

The quick list

  • Best smash burger with a story: Trill Burgers, in a building that used to be a James Coney Island.
  • Best late-night smash: Burger Bodega on Washington Avenue, open until 3 a.m. on weekends.
  • Best build-your-own: burgerchan, where you can add seared Spam and kimchi relish.
  • Best with your dog: The Burger Joint, which gives dogs a free puppy shake.
  • Best steakhouse-grade patty: Pappas Burger, made from Pappas Bros. Steakhouse beef trimmings.
  • Most unusual: Rainbow Lodge's Friday-only wild game burger.
  • Best cheap classic: Bubba's Texas Burger Shack, Stanton's City Bites or Prince's Hamburgers.
  • Best before a flight: Hubcap Grill, at Bush Intercontinental and Hobby.

How we chose

We looked for burgers with a clear point of view: a technique, a signature, a building or a habit worth the drive. Every place on this list was checked as operating on its own official website in October 2026, and what we tell you to order comes from those menus. We left out a few famous names whose official sites we couldn't confirm; that doesn't mean they've closed, only that we couldn't verify them.

Hours and prices change often. Treat every schedule below as "typically" and check the restaurant's site before you go.

Smash burgers

Trill Burgers

Montrose, 3607 S Shepherd Dr (also Spring and Missouri City) · drive-thru · open daily

Trill Burgers is co-founded by Houston rap legend Bun B, and it started as a pop-up in 2021 before opening this restaurant in June 2023. The building used to be a historic James Coney Island, and the drive-thru is a big part of how it keeps the line moving. Order the OG: two smashed all-beef patties, caramelized onions, pickles and Trill Sauce on a potato roll.

I didn't know that: at the 2023 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the team says it served more than 41,000 burgers in 20 days. The full story is in our Trill Burgers guide.

Hours: typically 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and until midnight Friday to Sunday.

Burger Bodega

Washington Avenue, 4520 Washington Ave (also Katy) · drive-through window · closed Mondays

Burger Bodega mixes New York bodega culture with Houston street food. The double smash burger comes with American cheese, grilled onions, house-made pickles and Bodega sauce on a potato bun, and there's a chopped cheese on a hero roll for anyone who's spent time in New York. Add the Screwed Fries, with cheese sauce, onions and Bodega sauce.

Why it's here: the Washington Avenue location typically stays open until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, which makes it the end of a lot of good nights. Shakes include Vietnamese coffee and mango lassi.

burgerchan

Galleria, 5353 W Alabama St, and the Heights, 506 Yale St

burgerchan has been serving its "smashed with umami" burgers in Houston since 2016. You build your own: thin 2-ounce smashed patties or thicker 5-ounce flame-grilled ones, on brioche, sweet sourdough or rye. Then go off-script with seared Spam, kimchi relish or sambal mayo, and finish with a Milo chocolate malt or Vietnamese coffee shake.

Insider tip: the Heights location has a full bar with cocktails and happy hour, so it works for a sit-down evening. The Galleria one is the lunch move; our Galleria restaurant guide has more nearby.

Bar burgers and late nights

The Burger Joint

Montrose, 2703 Montrose Blvd · Heights, 2002 N Shepherd Dr · also Memorial and Baybrook

The Burger Joint is the burger you want at 1 a.m. The Montrose, Heights and Memorial locations typically stay open until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The burgers are Angus beef, served medium on toasty buns. Go for the Classic, the Opa! with grass-fed lamb, feta and tzatziki, or the Kimchi with Korean BBQ-style beef and a fried egg.

The shareable bit: every location has a dog-friendly patio with water bowls, and dogs get a free puppy shake with any order, made with dog treats, peanut butter and whipped cream. Just ask your server.

Christian's Tailgate

Heights, 2820 White Oak Dr · Midtown, 2000 Bagby St · Energy Corridor, 1010 Hwy 6 N

Christian's Tailgate is a Houston bar and grill built around burgers, beer and whatever game is on. It's the icehouse-style move: a cheeseburger, a cold one and a seat for kickoff. All three locations typically stay open until midnight Sunday to Wednesday and 2 a.m. Thursday to Saturday.

Best for: watching a game with a group. For more bars in the same spirit, see our best bars in Houston.

Moon Tower Inn

East End, 3004 Canal St · beer garden · open daily

Moon Tower Inn calls itself the "Keepers of Hotdog Truth," and hot dogs are the headline. But the weekday lunch Harvey Burger is a sleeper: a quarter-pound of Angus beef on a sesame bun with American cheese and the house secret sauce. Watch the daily specials for buy-one-get-one burger nights.

Know before you go: the menu says no modifications, and the kitchen typically closes 30 minutes before the bar.

Steakhouse-grade burgers

Pappas Burger

Galleria, 5815 Westheimer Rd · open daily

Pappas Burger has been part of the Pappas family of restaurants since 2001, and its patty has a steakhouse pedigree. The restaurant says the patty is a blend of ground Prime beef made from Pappas Bros. Steakhouse trimmings, the buns are baked by the Pappas bakery, and the fries are cut fresh every morning. Look for the Hickory Cheddar Burger with bacon and hickory-smoked BBQ sauce, or build your own.

Our take: this is the easiest way to taste Pappas Bros. beef without booking a steakhouse table. If you want the full steak experience, see our best steakhouses in Houston.

Rainbow Lodge

Near the Heights, 2011 Ella Blvd at East TC Jester · Friday lunch only for the burger

Rainbow Lodge is a wild game restaurant, and once a week it makes one of the most unusual burgers in town. Wild Game Burger Friday is a blend of bison, elk and beef ribeye, served with house-made potato chips, pickles and smoked mustard. The special topping rotates from Friday to Friday, from pimento cheese to green chiles, and the lodge posts the upcoming schedule on its site.

Insider tip: it's lunch only, on Fridays. Can't make Friday? The lunch menu, served Tuesday to Friday, typically includes wild game burger sliders.

Becks Prime

Original on Kirby Dr, plus Memorial Park, Augusta, Dairy Ashford, Meyerland, Sugar Land, The Woodlands and Katy

Becks Prime opened its first location on Kirby Drive in 1985, with a double drive-thru and an open-air patio. It still grills everything over mesquite coals, and cooks grind fresh Certified Angus Beef chuck every morning. Get the Bacon Cheeseburger and a shake or malt.

I didn't know that: Becks Prime says its only freezer is for the beer mugs. The Memorial Park location, at 1001 E Memorial Loop Dr, opens at 6 a.m. with breakfast, which makes it a great refuel after a loop. See our Memorial Park guide.

Cheap classics and old-school favorites

Bubba's Texas Burger Shack

Near the Galleria, 5230 Westpark Dr · open daily

Bubba's is a small burger shack on Westpark that has been grilling for more than 40 years, by its own account. It serves beef burgers, but the reason to go is bison. Order a bison burger and eat it at the shack. Lines are common at lunch.

Why it's here: it's proof that a great Houston burger doesn't need a dining room.

Stanton's City Bites

Near downtown, 1420 Edwards St · closed Mondays

Stanton's is a family-run spot with old hardwood floors and a long diner bar, and its menu is a burger lover's playground. The Miss Piggie is a patty of freshly ground bacon and beef with candied bacon and a hash brown. The Truck Stopper piles on two fried onion rings. The Monster has two patties, four slices of American cheese and house monster sauce. And yes, there's a Luke Skyburger.

Hours: typically 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, until 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Prince's Hamburgers

Sharpstown, 6600 Harbor Town Dr · open daily, mornings to late afternoon

Prince's bills itself as "Houston's Hometown Burger," and today you'll find it attached to Sharpstown Golf Course. It typically opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. every day, so plan on lunch.

Insider tip: pair it with a round. Our Houston golf courses guide covers the rest of the city's tee times.

Tookie's Burgers

Kemah, 406 Texas Ave · open daily

Tookie's was founded in 1975 and named after the Tooker Brothers drugstore its founder remembered from a small Texas town, and the vintage decor still has that soda-fountain feel. On September 13, 2008, Hurricane Ike's storm surge put five feet of Galveston Bay water inside the restaurant; it rebuilt with a full bar and patio. Order the Squealer, the Champion or the Bean Burger, and a milkshake.

I didn't know that: Tookie's says a 2008 book on America's best burgers named it one of only eight in all of Texas. Make a day of it with our Kemah Boardwalk guide.

Hubcap Grill

Bush Intercontinental Terminal A · Hobby Airport · Santa Fe

Hubcap Grill makes hand-crafted burgers from fresh, never-frozen beef with hand-cut fries. Its two airport locations typically open at 4 a.m. and close at 10 p.m., so you can have a proper burger before an early flight.

Insider tip: Hubcap warns that its burgers are cooked to order and take time, so order before you join the boarding line. Our Houston airports guide has the terminal basics.

Save this: a Houston burger crawl

Split each burger with a friend, or you'll tap out by stop three.

  1. Lunch at Becks Prime on Kirby, the 1985 original, for a mesquite-grilled bacon cheeseburger.
  2. Afternoon at Trill Burgers on South Shepherd, nearby, for the OG through the drive-thru.
  3. Dinner at burgerchan in the Heights for a build-your-own and a cocktail.
  4. Late night at Burger Bodega on Washington Avenue for a double smash, if it's Friday or Saturday.
  5. Bonus on a Friday: swap lunch for the wild game burger at Rainbow Lodge, served from 11 a.m.

Before you go: a quick checklist

  • Check hours on the restaurant's own site the day you go. Several close Mondays, and Rainbow Lodge's burger is Friday lunch only.
  • Going late? The Burger Joint and Burger Bodega stay open into the early morning on weekends.
  • Bringing the dog? The Burger Joint has dog-friendly patios at every location.
  • On a budget? Burger Bodega's single smash burger is typically under $10 on its posted menu, and our cheap eats in Houston guide has more.
  • Flying out? Hubcap Grill is inside both airports.
