Best Burgers in the East End, Houston: 9 Joints From Sampson to EaDo

Date Published

Illustrated burger, orange shake and walk-up stand for burgers in the East End

The best burgers in Houston's East End start at Champ Burger, a walk-up stand on Sampson Street in the Second Ward that grills 1/3-pound patties of fresh ground chuck on weekdays only. From there, the list runs down Navigation Boulevard to Boo's Burgers and The Original Ninfa's, over to Moon Tower Inn on Canal Street, and into EaDo, where Nancy's Hustle, Rodeo Goat, Truck Yard, Little Woodrow's and Pitch 25 feed the crowds headed to Daikin Park and Shell Energy Stadium.

Here's the line to send a friend: the East End burger stand that has been grilling for six decades sells an orange milkshake and asks you not to split the check at lunch. Both are true, and both are printed on Champ Burger's own menu.

What counts as the East End?

For this guide, the East End is the part of Houston east of downtown and US-59/I-69, bounded by Buffalo Bayou to the north, Loop 610 East to the east and roughly Brays Bayou to the south. That takes in the Second Ward (Segundo Barrio), Eastwood, Magnolia Park and the Harrisburg corridor, plus EaDo (East Downtown), the warehouse district next to the stadiums.

All nine picks below happen to sit in the western half of that zone, in the 77003 ZIP code, between Navigation Boulevard, Harrisburg Boulevard and the EaDo stadium blocks. That's where the burger joints we could verify cluster. If you want the deeper EaDo story, see our EaDo restaurant guide.

The quick list

  • The original: Champ Burger, a Second Ward walk-up that has served the neighborhood for six decades by its own count.
  • The newer classic: Boo's Burgers on Navigation, with beef ground in house and a buttered challah bun.
  • Only-in-the-East-End burger: the Fajita Burger at The Original Ninfa's on Navigation, made with ground and chopped fajita.
  • Late-night burger: Moon Tower Inn on Canal Street, open until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • Date-night burger: Nancy's Hustle in EaDo, a cheeseburger on a brioche English muffin.
  • Most ambitious toppings: Rodeo Goat on Dallas Street.
  • Burger with a Ferris wheel: Truck Yard in EaDo.
  • Astros game-day burger: Little Woodrow's EaDo.
  • Pre-Dynamo sliders: Pitch 25 on Walker Street.

How we chose

We picked East End places where the burger is a real reason to go, not an afterthought, and mixed old-school counters with bars and a bistro. Every pick had to be confirmed open, at an East End address, on its own official website in November 2026, with a burger listed on its official menu.

We left out several much-loved names we couldn't confirm on an official site, including Harrisburg Country Club on Harrisburg Boulevard and Lucky's Pub in EaDo. Prices and hours below come from each official site at last check. They change, so treat them as typical and check before you go. Nobody paid to be on this list.

The Second Ward and Navigation Boulevard

1. Champ Burger

304 Sampson St, Second Ward · weekdays only · phone-in orders welcome

Champ Burger in the Second Ward is the East End's old-school burger stand, and it's the first stop on this list. Its own menu says it has been serving the community for 60 years. Every burger is a 1/3-pound patty of fresh prime ground chuck. The plain Champ Burger is the cheapest thing on the board, and the menu marks the chili cheese version and the bacon cheeseburger as favorites.

What to order: a Champ Burger with cheese and jalapeños, beer-batter onion rings, and an orange shake. Yes, orange is one of the four shake flavors.

Insider tip: the menu says no separate-pay orders between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., so pick one person to pay before the lunch rush. Champ Burger is typically open Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and takes cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

2. Boo's Burgers

2510 Navigation Blvd, Second Ward · lunch and dinner

Boo's Burgers on Navigation Boulevard is a newer East End burger counter, and it keeps the menu short. The Boo's OG is in-house-ground beef and American cheese inside a buttered challah bun, with OG Burger Sauce, shaved onions, spicy pickles, tomato and shredded lettuce. You can make it a double. The Shroom Sammie is the vegetarian option.

What to order: the Boo's OG as a double, plus fries, which the menu says serve two.

Good to know: Boo's posts its hours on its official site. Sunday hours are shorter than the rest of the week, so check before a late Sunday visit.

3. The Original Ninfa's on Navigation

2704 Navigation Blvd, Second Ward · open daily

The Original Ninfa's on Navigation is where Mama Ninfa Laurenzo started serving fajitas in 1973, out of her family's tortilla factory, according to the restaurant. So the burger to order here is the one only this kitchen could make: the Fajita Burger, built from ground and chopped fajita and topped with grilled onions, poblanos, cheese and chipotle aioli, served with roasted potato wedges. The menu calls it award-winning.

What to order: the Fajita Burger, and a side of queso for the table.

Good to know: Ninfa's is typically open from 11 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends, when brunch runs until 2 p.m. Our best Tex-Mex in Houston guide tells more of the family story.

4. Moon Tower Inn

3004 Canal St, Second Ward · open late daily

Moon Tower Inn on Canal Street is a casual bar in the East End Cultural District, better known for wild-game hot dogs but serious about burgers too. Its burgers are certified Angus smash patties on bread from Cake & Bacon, served with chips. The Moontower Burger is the straight cheeseburger. The Cheech adds chèvre, roasted poblanos and bacon. The Grim Creeper piles two patties with chipotle pimento cheese, poblanos, jalapeños and fried onion, and the menu warns you'll probably regret it.

What to order: the Cheech, or the Bob if you want the house-made veggie patty.

Insider tip: Wednesday from 6 p.m. is buy-one-get-one burgers, singles only and not to go. Moon Tower Inn typically opens at 11 a.m. and stays open until midnight Sunday to Thursday and 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The kitchen closes 30 minutes earlier.

EaDo, by the stadiums

5. Nancy's Hustle

2704 Polk St, EaDo · dinner nightly

Nancy's Hustle in EaDo calls itself a modern bistro on Houston's east side, and its cheeseburger is the reason a lot of people book. It comes on a brioche English muffin with American cheese, pickles, red onion and aioli. Add the hand-cut fries with spicy ketchup.

What to order: the cheeseburger and fries, then whatever the rest of the table is sharing.

Good to know: Nancy's Hustle is typically open every day from 5 to 11 p.m. and takes reservations through Resy. It's on our EaDo date night list for good reason.

6. Rodeo Goat

2105 Dallas St, EaDo · lunch to late

Rodeo Goat on Dallas Street at St. Emanuel is the EaDo burger bar for people who like a long menu of loaded burgers. The list runs to names like the Hot Bastard, the Billy F Gibbons and the Royale with Cheese, and Rodeo Goat regularly runs a Battle of the Burgers, where two specials go head to head and diners vote.

What to order: start with whatever's in the current Battle of the Burgers, or the Bodacious sliders during weekday happy hour.

Good to know: Rodeo Goat Houston is typically open from 11 a.m. daily, until 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

7. Truck Yard Houston

2118 Lamar St, EaDo · afternoons to late

Truck Yard in EaDo is a sprawling beer garden with live music, rotating food trucks and its own kitchen, and the kitchen's Smash Burger is the reliable order. It's two beef brisket and short rib patties with American cheese, pickles and Comeback Sauce on a Hawaiian bun, with a pickle spear and chips. Skipping bread? The Smash Burger Bowl puts the same patties over cauliflower rice.

What to order: the Smash Burger, then a ride on the Ferris wheel, which Truck Yard runs on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Good to know: Truck Yard is 21 and up after 9 p.m. Kitchen hours are shorter than bar hours, so check the official page.

8. Little Woodrow's EaDo

801 St Emanuel St, EaDo · open until 2 a.m.

Little Woodrow's EaDo is the Houston bar chain's game-day base, a short walk from Daikin Park, and its Classic Smash Burger uses RC Ranch wagyu with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion and smashing sauce on a sesame bun, with house-made fries. Little Woodrow's EaDo opens early for Astros day games.

What to order: the Classic Smash Burger before first pitch.

Good to know: the chain notes that menus vary by location, and the bar is 21 and up after 7 p.m. or until the 7th inning of Astros home games. Pair it with our Daikin Park guide.

9. Pitch 25

2120 Walker St, EaDo · afternoons to late, brunch on weekends

Pitch 25 is a beer park on Walker Street with soccer pitches, co-founded by Houston Dynamo great Brian Ching, and its burger order is a pair of smash-patty sliders. The Celebration Sliders bring smoky bacon jam, crispy onions, pickles and white American cheese. The Pitch Classic Sliders keep it simple with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, dill ranch and bacon.

What to order: the Celebration Sliders before a match at Shell Energy Stadium, or the Hangover Sandwich, an Angus patty with spicy aioli, bacon, egg and pepper jack on challah toast, at weekend brunch.

Good to know: Pitch 25 typically opens at 2 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends.
