Tomball things to do German festival illustration

Tomball, Houston's northwest German-heritage suburb, packs a lot of weekend programming into a city of 12,000. The walkable Main Street historic core, the Tomball Depot, and the annual German Festival give it more cultural texture than most fast-growing master-planned suburbs in the region. Whether you are visiting for a day or living in Tomball ISD and looking for things to do with kids, this guide hits the practical highlights.

Tomball German Festival — The Tentpole

Held over three days in late March, the Tomball German Festival is the anchor event of the local calendar. 80,000+ people pass through downtown across the weekend. The lineup: bratwurst, sauerkraut, pretzels, Bavarian beer, polka stages, a Dachshund Dash race, classic car displays, and a midway. It is free to attend, though some on-site experiences require tickets. Park early at the Lone Star College-Tomball overflow lots and shuttle in — the lots within walking distance fill by mid-morning.

The German Festival is by far the busiest weekend of the year. If you are planning a broader Houston visit around it, see our best time to visit Houston guide — late March is generally one of the most pleasant weather windows in the region.

Old Town Tomball Main Street

Outside festival weekends, Old Town runs at a slower pace and is genuinely walkable. Spend an afternoon wandering between antique shops, a couple of small bookstores, beer halls, and the Tomball Depot. The depot itself, a restored 1907 Trinity & Brazos Valley rail station, operates as a small museum and event space — admission is free during open hours.

  • Antique Capital of Texas walk — Tomball calls itself this, and the cluster of antique malls along Main Street earns the name
  • Tomball Depot museum and grounds
  • Beer halls and craft cocktail bars along Main Street
  • Weekend farmers markets (seasonal — Saturdays in spring/fall)

For Families and Kids

Burroughs Park

Burroughs Park is the marquee outdoor space in the Tomball area — a 320-acre Harris County park with stocked fishing ponds, a sand-bottom playground, splash pad, hiking trails, and dog park. Free, open daily. The splash pad runs through the warm months and is one of the best-equipped in northwest Houston.

Spring Creek Greenway

The Spring Creek Greenway runs along Tomball's eastern edge and connects via a hike-and-bike trail system that eventually links up with The Woodlands. Good for casual cycling, birdwatching, and short hikes. Free.

Tomball Community Library and Lone Star College Programs

Lone Star College-Tomball hosts a steady calendar of community lectures, art exhibitions in the library, and theater performances at the Performing Arts Center. Most are free or low-cost. The community library across the campus runs strong children's programming.

Annual Events Beyond German Festival

  • Tomball Night (early November) — Old Town festival, food trucks, family activities, free
  • Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting (early December) — Main Street parade, the tree lighting at the Depot
  • Honky Tonk Chili Fest (spring) — cook-off and music at one of the local venues
  • Memorial Day and Fourth of July events — fireworks at Burroughs Park or other community sites
  • Monthly Cars & Coffee — gathers on Main Street one Saturday a month

Sports and Outdoor Activities

Tomball ISD athletics dominates Friday night football in the fall, and Tomball High and Tomball Memorial High both run strong programs across multiple sports. Tickets are inexpensive and the stadium atmosphere is the suburban Texas classic. For year-round outdoor activity, several disc golf courses, golf courses (High Meadow Ranch, Tour 18 nearby), and the Spring Creek trail network keep things active.

Day Trip Pairings

Tomball pairs well with nearby destinations for a longer weekend in northwest Houston:

  • Old Town Spring — 15 minutes east, another historic walkable district
  • The Woodlands — 25 minutes northeast, Market Street and waterway
  • Magnolia and Montgomery County wineries — short drive north
  • Cypress and the Bridgeland area — 20 minutes south

Getting to Tomball

From central Houston, the easiest routes are the SH 249 Tomball Tollway (fastest) or US-290 to FM 1960 to SH 249. METRO transit does not extend reliably to Tomball — see our METRO Houston guide for what the regional transit network does and does not cover. From the airports, expect 35-50 minutes from IAH and over an hour from Hobby. Weather matters: late spring and summer pop-up storms can scramble plans, and hurricane season runs June-November — our hurricane preparation guide applies to Tomball as much as anywhere else in the region.
