- Things to Do in Katy, TX
Katy sells itself on schools and master-planned communities, but the weekend menu has filled in over the last decade. Typhoon Texas pulls Houston-area families out of the inner Loop for summer water-park day trips. Katy Mills moves shoppers from across Greater Houston for outlet pricing. LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch handles the upscale evening-out crowd. And Mary Jo Peckham Park quietly does some of the best free family programming west of the Beltway.
Here is what to actually do, broken down by who you're bringing.
With kids (the default)
Typhoon Texas off the Grand Parkway is the marquee summer destination, a full-size water park with a lazy river, wave pool, and the Lone Star Tower drop slide. It's open seasonally, typically May through September. Katy VR Family Entertainment Center handles the rainy-day slot. Main Event off the Katy Freeway pairs bowling, laser tag, and an arcade in the same building. For free, the indoor playground at Mary Jo Peckham Park is the most-used after-school spot in the entire city.
Shopping and a meal
Katy Mills is a 1.3-million-square-foot outlet center off I-10, anchored by Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, and the alligator pond inside Bass Pro is a free attraction in its own right. LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch is the lifestyle-center counterweight on the Fort Bend side: walkable streets, fountain plaza, sit-down restaurants like Perry's Steakhouse and Eddie V's. We cover the full restaurant scene in our Best Restaurants in Katy guide.
Outdoors and parks
Mary Jo Peckham Park is the locals' answer for free outdoor time, a stocked fishing lake, walking trail, indoor pool, and one of the best playgrounds in west Houston. Cane Island Park and the Cross Creek Ranch parks systems are also worth a stroll if you have access. For longer trails, Brazos Bend State Park sits about 45 minutes south and delivers alligator-spotting, hiking, and a clear-sky observatory, a legitimate full-day Houston-area trip. Just check the weather first; see our Houston hurricane preparation guide if you're planning during storm season.
Date night
LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch handles most of the dinner-and-drinks demand. Perry's Steakhouse for the splurge, Eddie V's for the piano bar, Snooze A.M. Eatery for next-morning brunch. The B-Hive Lounge above LaCenterra does cocktails. For a movie, Flix Brewhouse took over the former Alamo Drafthouse location and serves dinner-and-a-movie in the same model. If you want a bigger night out, head into town. Start with our 2 days in Houston itinerary for the inner-Loop options.
Events worth planning around
Katy Rice Festival (October) is the city's biggest annual event, a free three-day street fair on Old Katy's historic Main Street with a parade, carnival, and live music. The Folk Life Festival (March) and Katy ISD Livestock Show & Rodeo (February) round out the calendar. Christmas brings the Cinco Ranch HOA light display and the LaCenterra holiday tree lighting. Most events lean family-suburban, not nightlife-driven.
When NOT to drive to Katy
Houston Texans home Sundays, the day of a TX-Renaissance Festival weekend, and right after a major storm release at the Addicks and Barker reservoirs. The Katy Freeway is the artery for almost everything west of Loop 610. See our I-10 Katy Freeway navigation guide for the time-of-day breakdown. If you're driving from Downtown, expect 35 to 55 minutes to LaCenterra depending on traffic, and prep with our Downtown Houston parking guide before the return trip.
