Things to do in Clear Lake, TX center on the water and on NASA. The neighborhood wraps Clear Lake itself, opens onto Galveston Bay, and sits at the front door of NASA Johnson Space Center. Add the Kemah Boardwalk a few minutes away, and a weekend slate writes itself: sailing, Space Center Houston, dockside seafood, and an amusement-park boardwalk before bedtime.
Here's how locals actually use the area, and what's worth the drive if you're visiting.
Space Center Houston / NASA Johnson
Space Center Houston is the public-facing visitor center for NASA Johnson, and it is the single biggest reason out-of-town visitors come to this part of Harris County. Walk through Mission Control, see real Apollo and shuttle hardware, and take the tram tour onto the NASA campus. Allow half a day. Read our full NASA Johnson Space Center guide before you go.
Kemah Boardwalk
Kemah Boardwalk, owned by Houston's own Tilman Fertitta, is a 60-acre waterfront complex with a roller coaster, a Ferris wheel, an aquarium restaurant, and a working harbor. Bring kids. The fireworks on summer Friday nights are the unofficial Clear Lake weekend kickoff.
Sailing and on-water rentals
The Lakewood Yacht Club, the Houston Yacht Club, and a handful of public ramps put Clear Lake in the top tier of US sailing destinations. Sundance Sailing and other charter operators rent crewed sailboats by the day for first-timers; if you want to learn, Texas Sailing Academy runs ASA-certified classes out of Watergate Yachting Center. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are easy to find on the lakefront.
Armand Bayou Nature Center
Armand Bayou, on the north side of Clear Lake, is 2,500 acres of preserved tidal estuary, prairie, and forest — one of the largest urban wildlife refuges in the country. Easy boardwalks, a working farm, and pontoon tours with naturalists. Bring sunscreen.
Galveston day trip
Galveston is a 30-minute drive south on I-45 and is the go-to beach day from Clear Lake. Most locals do Pleasure Pier or East Beach for a few hours, then dinner at Gaido's or Mosquito Cafe. If you only have one weekend in Houston, see the best time to visit Houston guide for which months pair well with a Galveston add-on.
Where to eat between activities
The best restaurants in Clear Lake guide has the full list, but the short version for visitors: Tommy's Patio Cafe for breakfast or weekend brunch, Skipper's Pier for sunset, Topwater Grill in nearby San Leon for serious Gulf shrimp.
Weather and timing
Clear Lake is hottest and most humid May through September. Spring and late fall are the best for being on the water. Hurricane season runs June through November — check the Houston hurricane preparation guide if you're traveling in late summer.
