- Best Bars in La Porte, TX: Sports Bars, Pubs and a Ship Channel View
The best bars in La Porte, TX fall into three groups: big-screen sports bars along Fairmont Parkway and Spencer Highway, neighborhood bars and a wine bistro around historic Main Street and Five Points, and one bar room near the San Jacinto Monument with a view of the Houston Ship Channel. Our top picks are Man Kind Sports Bar for game day, Battleground Saloon for a family-friendly bar and grill, Ed’s Bistro for wine on Main Street and Monument Inn for a drink while tankers slide past. Every bar below was checked against its own official website, its official Facebook page or the City of La Porte’s Visit La Porte listing.
La Porte is a small bay town, so its bar scene is short and local: no velvet ropes, plenty of game-day screens, and one bar where dinner comes with homemade cinnamon rolls and a view of passing ships.
How do we define La Porte?
For this guide, La Porte means the City of La Porte on the northwest shore of Galveston Bay, and every pick has a La Porte, TX 77571 address on its own official site or listing. We left out neighboring Deer Park, Pasadena, Shoreacres, Morgan’s Point, Seabrook and Baytown, even where they sit just across the street. If you want those towns, see our guides to the best bars in Pasadena and the best bars in Baytown.

How we chose
We started with every bar and bar-and-grill we could find with a La Porte address, including the City of La Porte’s own Visit La Porte dining guide, then kept only places we could confirm as currently open on their own website or official Facebook page. We favored places with a clear reason to go: lots of screens, a patio, a view, a wine list, or a long track record in town. Several bars that turn up in older directories either had dead websites or no current official presence, so we left them off rather than send you to a locked door.
Hours and happy-hour deals change often. Treat every time below as “typically” and check the bar’s official site before you go.
Sports bars on Fairmont Parkway and Spencer Highway
La Porte’s game-day bars sit on the west side of town along the two big east-west roads, Fairmont Parkway and Spencer Highway.
Man Kind Sports Bar
West Fairmont Parkway · 11001 W. Fairmont Pkwy., La Porte, TX 77571 · 21 and over
Man Kind Sports Bar is a dedicated sports bar on La Porte’s west side, opened in June 2015 by a local family and pitched on its official site as “the evolution of the man cave.” The setup is simple and built for watching: eleven big high-definition screens, a full bar and fourteen beers on tap. Happy hour typically runs until 7 p.m. every day (one discount at a time), which is later than any other happy hour on this list.
It typically opens at 11 a.m. on weekdays and noon on weekends, and stays open until midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, so it is also the latest stop on this list. Bring ID: the bar says you must be 21 or older to enter.
Order: a draft from the fourteen taps and whatever the kitchen is pushing that night.
Best for: NFL Sundays, fight nights and a late Friday.
Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux
Spencer Highway · 10003 Spencer Hwy., La Porte, TX 77571
Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux is the Louisiana-born sports restaurant and bar, and the La Porte location has a patio, a private room for groups and game audio for select games. The kitchen leans Louisiana, alongside burgers, wings and what the restaurant describes as fresh, never-frozen seafood, and the bar carries an extensive tap list and cocktails.
Insider tip: Walk-On’s La Porte runs two happy hours. The weekday one is typically Monday through Friday from 2 to 6 p.m.; the second is a late-night Saturday happy hour, typically 8 to 11 p.m., the only late-night happy hour on this list.
Order: the Louisiana Loaded Nachos to share and a draft.
Best for: big groups, mixed-age families earlier in the day, and anyone who wants a real meal with the game. For more game-day spots across the metro, see our best sports bars in Houston.
Chili’s Grill & Bar La Porte
Spencer Highway · 8690 Spencer Hwy., La Porte, TX 77571
Chili’s is a chain, but the La Porte bar is a dependable happy-hour stop, and its official location page lists the deals. Happy hour is typically Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m., with $3 16-ounce Bud Light, Miller Lite and Coors Light, a $6 Margarita of the Month and a $7 Tequila Classic Margarita. It is typically open until 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until midnight Friday and Saturday.
Best for: a low-stakes after-work margarita when you don’t want to think about it.
Main Street, Five Points and South Broadway
La Porte’s older bars cluster around the downtown grid where Main Street meets Broadway, around the Five Points intersection.
Battleground Saloon
Five Points · 116 S. Broadway St., La Porte, TX 77571
Battleground Saloon describes itself on its official Facebook page as a family-friendly bar and grill, located directly across from historic Five Points. In our view it is the La Porte bar most likely to have kids at one table and a birthday round at the next. The City of La Porte lists it at 116 S. Broadway St.
La Porte sits a few miles from the San Jacinto Battleground, where Texas won its independence in 1836. Pair a visit with our San Jacinto Monument guide.
Best for: a casual afternoon with the family or a neighborhood night out. Check the Facebook page for events before you go.
Main 101 Grill & Bar
Downtown Main Street · 101 E. Main St., La Porte, TX 77571
Main 101 Grill & Bar sits right on the corner of Main Street and Broadway, and its official site thanks guests for 20 years in business. It is a downtown fixture near Five Points.
The site doesn’t publish hours or a menu, so call or check before you head over.
Best for: a classic downtown bar-and-grill night before or after a Main Street event.
Ed’s Bistro
Downtown Main Street · 102 W. Main St., La Porte, TX 77571
Ed’s Bistro on Main is the wine bar of the group: a food-and-wine restaurant with a wine, beer and spirits list and a happy hour typically from 3 to 6 p.m., according to its official site. It also hosts wine dinners, which it describes as multi-course dinners served with several different wines, plus educational tastings.
Ed’s is typically closed Mondays and opens at 8 a.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. on weekends, so it also works for breakfast or brunch. See our best brunch in La Porte guide for more weekend morning spots.
Order: ask what’s open by the glass at happy hour.
Best for: date night, and anyone who wants a glass of wine instead of a pitcher.
Lance’s Twisted Turtle Grill & Pub
South Broadway · 1023 S. Broadway St., La Porte, TX 77571
Lance’s Twisted Turtle Grill & Pub is a neighborhood pub south of downtown, and the City of La Porte calls it a relaxed sports bar serving wings and beer. Its official site lists smash-style burgers, hot sandwiches, wraps, seafood, daily specials, and bone-in and boneless wings tossed in your choice of sauces.
It is typically open from 11 a.m. most days, opens at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, and stays open latest on Friday, typically until 11 p.m.
Order: wings in your favorite sauce and a cold beer.
Best for: an easy weeknight with the game on.
Ship Channel views near the San Jacinto Monument
One La Porte bar trades screens for scenery: the bar at Monument Inn looks out over the Houston Ship Channel.
Monument Inn
North La Porte, by the Ship Channel · 4406 Independence Pkwy. S., La Porte, TX 77571
Monument Inn is a seafood restaurant that has been in business since 1974, and its official site says its bar, dining room and banquet rooms all overlook “the colorful and busy Houston Ship Channel.” The beverage menu includes beer and wine, and the seafood menu includes an all-you-can-eat option, served with homemade dinner and cinnamon rolls.
I didn’t know that: Monument Inn says it serves about 80,000 pounds of shrimp a year, and on a busy Saturday its in-house bakers make more than 1,000 cinnamon rolls. Six months after the current owners bought it in 1990, the restaurant burned to the ground; they reopened at the current location 10 weeks later.
It is typically open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, so this is a sunset drink, not a late night.
Best for: a beer with a view after the San Jacinto Monument, or before a Houston Ship Channel boat tour day.
Is there a brewery or waterfront bar on the beach in La Porte?
We didn’t find a brewery taproom with a La Porte address, and Sylvan Beach Park is a public park rather than a bar strip. For a taproom, head to Clear Lake; for a bar right on the bay, Kemah is a short drive south. See our best bars in Clear Lake and best bars in Kemah guides.
La Porte does have serious dance-hall history. According to the Harris County Historical Commission, Sylvan Beach Park’s 1930s pavilion was one of the largest dance halls in the South until a tornado spawned by the 1943 hurricane destroyed it. Harris County bought the park in 1954 and opened today’s octagonal, glass-walled Sylvan Beach Pavilion in May 1956, a hurricane-resistant ballroom that went on to host big bands, country, jazz and blues. It is now a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
Save this: a La Porte bar night, start to finish
This route crosses town, so use a rideshare or a designated driver; never drink and drive.
- 5 p.m., sunset drink: Monument Inn on Independence Parkway for a beer by the Ship Channel (it closes early, so start here).
- 6:30 p.m., downtown: Ed’s Bistro on Main Street for a glass of wine with dinner (Ed’s is typically closed Mondays), or Main 101 Grill & Bar across Broadway.
- 8 p.m., Five Points: Battleground Saloon for dinner and a round.
- 10 p.m., game or nightcap: Man Kind Sports Bar on West Fairmont Parkway, typically open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. On a Saturday, Walk-On’s late happy hour (typically 8 to 11 p.m.) is the alternative.
Checklist before you go: bring ID (Man Kind is 21 and over), check each bar’s site or Facebook page for that night’s hours, and book a ride home before the last stop.
