Houston Bars with Games: Ping Pong, Bocce, Darts and Shuffleboard

Date Published

Houston has 10 bars where the games are genuinely the point — dart bays you book in advance, bocce leagues that fill courts on weeknights, and a ping pong table that has stood at an outdoor icehouse since the bar first opened. They span six game types across Midtown, the Heights, Garden Oaks, Montrose, and the Galleria area.

The quick list

  • Darts (reservable okotech bays): Flight Club Houston, Montrose
  • Darts (most boards, steel-tip tournaments): Ron's Pub, Galleria area
  • Darts (classic pub leagues): Rudyard's British Pub, Montrose
  • Ping pong (outdoor icehouse, open since 1928): West Alabama Ice House, Upper Kirby
  • Ping pong + pool + giant Jenga: Social Beer Garden HTX, Midtown
  • Ping pong + giant Jenga + hammocks: Axelrad Beer Garden, Midtown
  • Bocce courts + darts + pool: Wakefield Crowbar, Garden Oaks
  • Bocce leagues + outdoor shuffleboard: Nettbar, Shady Acres
  • Bocce in a biergarten: Karbach Brewing, Oak Forest
  • Pool + pinball: Big Star Bar, the Heights

How we chose

Every bar was confirmed open via its official website or a recently updated third-party listing. We verified each game specifically — a Reddit mention from five years ago doesn't count. Three of the biggest names in Houston game bars — Punch Bowl Social, Kung Fu Saloon, and Taps House of Beer — are all permanently closed. The scene that replaced them is more neighborhood-focused and more specific. Game fees are noted under each entry; most bars here charge nothing to play beyond the cost of your drinks.

Darts

Houston's darts scene covers three formats: reservable high-tech bays for groups who want a structured game, a traditional pub with more boards than any other bar in the city, and a classic neighborhood pub that has run leagues since before most Houston bars existed.

Flight Club Houston — Regent Square

3515 W Dallas St · near Upper Kirby / River Oaks border

Flight Club uses okotech dart bays — large digital targets where you throw real darts at scoring visuals — the same format that launched in London and spread to New York and Chicago. The Houston location in Regent Square is one of two Flight Club locations in Texas — the other is in Dallas. Each bay holds one to six people and books through the official website. Come with a group of four; Flight Club is awkward for solo play.

What to order: The cocktail menu is the focus; order one of the spirit-forward options.

Cost to play: Paid — bay bookings are priced per person per hour. Check flightclubdarts.com for current rates before you go.

Reservations: Strongly recommended on Friday and Saturday evenings. Walk-ins can grab a bay if one opens, but do not count on it for groups.

Busiest nights: Friday and Saturday from 7 pm on.

Ron's Pub — Galleria area

1826 Fountain View Dr · near the Galleria

Ron's Pub has steel-tip dart tournaments on first Fridays and every Saturday night, and the regulars take their game seriously. The regulars take their game seriously. Show up on a Tuesday for casual practice without a wait.

What to order: Classic neighborhood pub fare — a cold beer works.

Cost to play: Tournament entry fees apply on tournament nights; casual walk-in play is free.

Reservations: Walk-in for regular nights; tournament sign-up happens at the bar.

Busiest nights: Saturdays (tournament night) and first Fridays.

Rudyard's British Pub — Montrose

2010 Waugh Dr · Montrose (open since 1978)

Rudyard's has run dart leagues since long before the Washington Avenue corridor became Houston's entertainment district — and long after the bars there have come and gone. The format is traditional: steel-tip boards, league nights during the week, live music most weekends. Prices reflect a bar that has not decided it needs to reinvent itself.

What to order: Draft beer. The bar's strength is its staying power and the crowd.

Cost to play: League nights have a nominal entry fee; walk-in play is free.

Reservations: None needed. Show up.

Busiest nights: Weekday league nights and Friday/Saturday for live music.

Ping pong

All three ping pong options here are free and walk-in only. The differences are setting: a nearly 100-year-old outdoor icehouse, a Midtown game bar with six game options, or a hammock grove with food trucks.

West Alabama Ice House — Upper Kirby

1919 W Alabama St · Upper Kirby (open since 1928)

The West Alabama Ice House has been open since 1928, making it one of the oldest continuously operating bars in Houston. The ping pong table is free, sits outdoors under string lights, and is as much a fixture as the bar itself. Most Houstonians have walked past the place for years without knowing the table is there — it is not on any sign. It is the right call on a mild evening when you want a beer, a game, and no cover charge.

What to order: Whatever is coldest. This is a cash bar with a simple tap list.

Cost to play: Free.

Reservations: None; tables are first-come.

Busiest nights: Sunday afternoons are a neighborhood tradition; Thursday and Friday evenings fill quickly.

Social Beer Garden HTX — Midtown

3101 San Jacinto St · [Midtown](/areas/midtown-houston)

Social Beer Garden HTX is the most game-dense bar on this list. Under one roof you will find ping pong tables, pool, darts, foosball, giant Jenga, and oversized Connect Four. Monday and Tuesday are designated free game nights — the best times to visit if you want a table without competing for it. The beer list skews craft.

Cost to play: Free on game nights; no extra charge any night.

Reservations: Walk-in only.

Busiest nights: Friday and Saturday evenings. Monday/Tuesday for quieter play.

Axelrad Beer Garden — Midtown

1517 Alabama St · Midtown

Axelrad is a hammock grove that also serves beer and hosts games. The grounds have ping pong, giant Jenga, string lights, live oaks, and rotating food trucks. It attracts a crowd that wants to be outside doing something rather than sitting at a screen. Good for a first date that involves actually playing a game.

What to order: The craft beer list is long; try a local pint.

Cost to play: Free.

Reservations: Walk-in only.

Busiest nights: Thursday through Saturday. Nice-weather weekends draw the longest crowds.

Bocce

Houston's three best bocce options each have a different personality: one is a sprawling outdoor game complex, one runs a competitive league, and one sits inside a biergarten where the beer is the main reason to go.

Wakefield Crowbar — Garden Oaks

954 Wakefield Dr · Garden Oaks

Wakefield Crowbar is the most complete outdoor game bar in Houston. It has multiple bocce courts, three full-size sand volleyball courts, pool tables, darts, cornhole, and a kids' area on one open property. That last detail makes it the rare adult game bar that works for a group where not everyone drinks the same way. The bocce courts are on the grass, informal, and never require a reservation.

What to order: Craft and domestic beer, plus basic cocktails. Cold beer in a can is the right choice here.

Cost to play: Free.

Reservations: Walk-in for general play; large private groups can inquire about event space.

Busiest nights: Friday evenings and weekend afternoons.

Nettbar — Shady Acres

1717 W 22nd St · Shady Acres

Nettbar runs one of the few organized bocce leagues in Houston — Wednesday nights fill the outdoor courts with registered teams. Outside league nights, the courts are open to walk-ins. Nettbar is also one of the only Houston bars with a full-size outdoor shuffleboard table (not a bar-top version). If you want both bocce and shuffleboard in one stop, this is your bar.

What to order: The craft beer list is well-curated for a neighborhood bar.

Cost to play: Free for walk-ins; bocce league requires registration via nettbarhouston.com.

Reservations: League sign-up online; walk-ins welcome on non-league nights.

Busiest nights: Wednesday for bocce league; Saturday afternoons for casual bocce and shuffleboard.

Karbach Brewing biergarten — Oak Forest

2032 Karbach St · Oak Forest (northwest Houston)

Karbach's biergarten has a bocce court set into the outdoor grounds. It is the only bar on this list where the beer is a stronger argument for going than the game — the beers Karbach built its name on, Love Street and Crawford Bock, taste better here than anywhere else. The bocce setup is informal and first-come. The biergarten typically closes Mondays and Tuesdays; check karbachbrewing.com before going.

What to order: Crawford Bock or Love Street.

Cost to play: Free.

Busiest nights: Friday evenings and weekend afternoons.

Shuffleboard and pool

For shuffleboard, Nettbar (above) has the best outdoor table in Houston. The Owl Bar at 2424 Dunstan Rd in the Rice Village area also has a shuffleboard table alongside darts — walk-in, no fees, quieter neighborhood setting. For pool, Big Star Bar at 1005 W 19th St in the Heights runs a reliable pool table in one of the better neighborhood-dive atmospheres on 19th Street. Pool, pinball, cold beer, no cover. All three are walk-in only.

Giant Jenga and oversized games

Axelrad and Social Beer Garden HTX are the two best bets for giant Jenga. Social Beer Garden HTX adds oversized Connect Four to the mix. Axelrad's outdoor hammock setting makes it the call in nice weather; Social Beer Garden HTX works any night. Both are free and walk-in only.

How to plan your night

  • Flight Club is the only bar that requires advance booking. Reserve your bay at flightclubdarts.com, especially Thursday through Saturday.
  • Bocce league nights at Nettbar (Wed/Thu) and Wakefield Crowbar fill the courts early; visit Sunday through Tuesday for a walk-in court with no wait.
  • Weather matters for five of these bars. Axelrad, Wakefield Crowbar, West Alabama Ice House, Nettbar, and Karbach's biergarten are primarily outdoor; Social Beer Garden HTX and Flight Club work in any conditions.
  • Busiest hours: Friday 7 pm to close and Saturday from 4 pm, across the board. Mid-week evenings are measurably quieter at every bar here.
  • Cost: Except for Flight Club's paid bay bookings, every bar here has free games. You're buying drinks, not table time.
