Lake Conroe is a 19,640-acre reservoir in Montgomery County, Texas, about 65 miles north of downtown Houston via Interstate 45. The San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA) completed the dam in January 1973 as a water supply reservoir for Houston — the result of a 1968 agreement between the SJRA, the City of Houston, and the Texas Water Development Board. The lake that keeps Houston hydrated also keeps its weekends booked. This guide covers the practical details: public boat ramps, marinas, watercraft rentals, where to stay, hiking in Sam Houston National Forest on the north shore, and the best window to make the drive.
Getting to Lake Conroe from Houston
Take Interstate 45 North about 65 miles. For the marina corridor and most rental operations, exit at Highway 105 (Exit 87A for Conroe, then west on Hwy 105). For the northern shore and Sam Houston National Forest trailheads, take Exit 94 toward Willis and then FM 1375 west. Drive time from downtown Houston is typically 60–75 minutes — check traffic before leaving, since IH-45 North slows on Friday afternoons. Lake Conroe also makes a solid entry on the day trips from Houston guide if you're stacking weekend drives.
Public boat ramps: free and paid launches
Eight documented public and semi-public ramps ring the lake. These four are the most practical for visitors coming from Houston.
FM 830 Ramp — free
The only ramp on Lake Conroe maintained by Texas Parks and Wildlife with no launch fee. Located north of Conroe off IH-45 at FM 830, it has two concrete lanes and courtesy docks. Best for kayaks, canoes, and small motorboats; there is no fuel or bait onsite. This is the go-to for budget outings and for kayaking and paddling day trips from Houston.
Cagle Recreation Area — Sam Houston National Forest
On the northern shore of the lake, operated by Sam Houston National Forest, Cagle has a two-lane concrete ramp, campground sites, and direct access to the Lone Star Hiking Trail. A launch fee applies; call the Ranger District at (936) 344-6205 for current fees and hours. This is the best pick if you want to combine a boat day with an overnight camp or a trail hike without driving to a separate trailhead.
Stubblefield Lake Recreation Area — free, small boats only
Also in Sam Houston National Forest, Stubblefield has a free dirt ramp for canoes, kayaks, and small fishing boats — not for large trailered powerboats. It doubles as the most accessible western trailhead for the Lone Star Hiking Trail. No launch fee. Phone: (936) 344-6205.
Scott's Ridge — National Forest, fee required
A two-lane concrete ramp near FM 1097 on the northern shore, managed by Sam Houston National Forest. Practical for boaters coming from the Willis side. Phone: (936) 344-6205.
Marinas
Stow-A-Way Marina
On the northern shore near Willis, Stow-A-Way is the most fully equipped private marina on the north side of the lake. It has a three-lane concrete ramp, restrooms, fish cleaning stations, live bait, ADA-accessible facilities, parking, and courtesy docks. A launch fee is required. Phone: (936) 856-4531. Hours vary by season, so call before making the drive.
April Plaza Marina
At 17742 Highway 105 West, Montgomery, TX 77356, April Plaza is the standout pick for visitors who want to rent rather than trailer a boat. Rentals include 8-person pontoons, 10-person tritoons, and Sea Doo jet skis. Public boat launch is $20; kayak launches are $10. The marina has a fuel dock with non-ethanol gasoline, live bait, tackle, and a ship store. Hours are typically 6:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. weekdays and 6 a.m.–6 p.m. weekends; confirm at aprilplazamarina.com or (936) 448-7800 before you go — hours shift seasonally and holiday weekends fill fast.
Lakeview Marina
On Highway 105 on the south shore, Lakeview has two sets of two-lane concrete ramps and has operated on the lake for decades. Phone: (936) 588-3190. Call to confirm current hours and services before visiting.
Boat and jet ski rentals
April Plaza Marina (17742 Hwy 105 W, Montgomery, TX 77356) is the confirmed rental operation on the lake, with Sea Doo jet ski, pontoon, and tritoon rentals available seven days a week. A damage waiver is available for an additional fee. Prices vary by season and boat type — call (936) 448-7800 or check aprilplazamarina.com for the current rate sheet.
Where to stay
Margaritaville Lake Resort Lake Conroe
The largest resort on the lake and the primary option for a proper weekend stay. Formerly known as La Torretta Lake Resort and Spa, the property at 600 La Torretta Blvd, Montgomery, TX 77356 includes a marina, multiple pools, water sport activities, and several restaurants and bars. Verify current room rates, marina hours, and water activity availability on the official site before booking — offerings vary by season.
Vacation rentals with private dock access
Lake Conroe has a dense supply of lakefront homes and cabins on major rental platforms. Searching for properties with a private dock is the right filter for anyone planning to launch a boat or kayak without driving to a public ramp. Rates drop noticeably after Labor Day and stay lower through fall, making October a particularly good value month. The Woodlands area — about 8 miles south of the lake — has a wide range of hotels if the lakefront inventory is full.
Hiking in Sam Houston National Forest
The northern and western shores of Lake Conroe border Sam Houston National Forest, which gives the lake something most Texas reservoirs don't have: a federally managed wilderness that starts within a few minutes' drive of the water. You can launch a kayak in the morning and be on a 96-mile national forest trail by early afternoon from the same parking lot at Stubblefield.
Lone Star Hiking Trail
The Lone Star Hiking Trail (LSHT) runs 96 miles east–west through Sam Houston National Forest. The two most accessible trailheads near Lake Conroe are Stubblefield Recreation Area (off FM 1375, free parking) and Cagle Recreation Area (fee applies). Day hikes from Stubblefield go east through a mix of longleaf pine and hardwood forest. The terrain is flat to gently rolling — standard East Texas piney woods — and accessible for most fitness levels. Bring your own water: there are no facilities on the trail between access points. For current trail conditions or closures, contact the Sam Houston National Forest Ranger District at (936) 344-6205 or visit fs.usda.gov/sam-houston.

Best time to visit Lake Conroe
Spring (March–May) is the best overall window. Water temperatures reach comfortable swimming range, bass fishing peaks in March and April, wildflowers bloom along the national forest trails, and weekend crowds haven't yet hit summer levels. This is when the lake is at its most energetic without being at capacity.
Fall (October–November) is the second-best window. The summer heat breaks, the lake slows down after Labor Day, and the hardwoods in Sam Houston National Forest put on modest fall color in November. Vacation rental prices drop significantly from summer rates, and weekday availability opens up.
Summer (June–August) is peak season. The lake is at its busiest and the heat index regularly exceeds 105 degrees on land — the water is the main relief. Book boat rentals and resort rooms several weeks in advance for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends, which can sell out entirely.
Winter (December–February) is the quiet season: few crowds, low rental prices, and mild temperatures by Texas standards. Some marinas reduce hours or pause watercraft rentals from December through February; call ahead before driving out.
How we chose
We included only facilities confirmed via an official website or via the Conroe Convention and Visitors Bureau's current boat-ramp directory. April Plaza Marina was confirmed directly via its own website showing current hours, rental types, and pricing. The Sam Houston National Forest ramps — Cagle, Stubblefield, Scott's Ridge — are USDA-managed public facilities confirmed via the CVB directory and the USDA Ranger District phone number. Stow-A-Way Marina and Lakeview Marina are listed in the CVB's current ramp directory; their own websites could not be reached to confirm. Margaritaville Lake Resort is listed by the CVB as the primary resort on the lake; the resort's official website timed out on every attempt. Lakeside restaurants are not included in this edition because no restaurant could be confirmed via an official website as of October 2026.
