How we chose
We required an active tasting room or wine bar with hours posted on the winery's own website as of October 2026. We checked each one directly. Hours and fees change — confirm on the official site before you drive.
Urban Houston: two tasting rooms inside the city
Decant Urban Winery
Garden Oaks, 948 Wakefield Dr · Thu 4pm–10pm, Fri 4pm–11pm, Sat 1pm–11pm, Sun 1pm–8pm; closed Mon–Wed
One of Houston's few genuine in-city production wineries, Decant makes small-batch wines on-site from internationally sourced grapes. The most unusual part: fermentation tanks and bottling equipment are visible from the tasting room floor, so you can watch the process while you taste. Walk-ins are welcome; tasting fees are typically in the $15–$20 range per person. Call (832) 472-6022 ahead to confirm current offerings.
Best for: curious drinkers and date nights without leaving the north side.
Pur Noire Urban Wineries
Downtown Houston, 802 Milam St Ste 103 · Wed–Thu 4pm–9pm, Fri–Sat 1pm–10pm, Sun 1pm–8pm; closed Mon–Tue
Houston's first Black-owned winery and tasting room pours ultra-premium wines sourced from Napa Valley vineyards and bottled in-house. The Trois tasting (three wines) is typically $20 per person; the Quatre tasting (four wines) runs $30; the Grand tasting goes up to $40. On weekdays the tasting is complimentary with the purchase of two bottles per person. Reservations are recommended on weekends; call (832) 476-2974 or check the official site before visiting — Pur Noire announced a temporary relocation in late 2025, so confirm the current address is still valid before making the drive.
Best for: a post-work evening in downtown Houston or a weekend afternoon before a show in the Theater District.
Closest drive: within an hour of the city
Messina Hof Winery — Richmond
Richmond, TX, 8921 Harlem Road · Tue–Sat 11am–9pm, Sun 11am–8pm; closed Monday
The newest Messina Hof location sits about 30 miles southwest of central Houston in Richmond, inside the Harvest Green community. A wine-on-tap system pours rotating Messina Hof wines by the glass alongside the Harvest Green Kitchen restaurant on the same property. Happy hour runs Tuesday through Friday from 4 to 6pm.
Best for: a weeknight stop on the southwest side. Pair it with a meal from our Richmond restaurant guide.
Haak Vineyards & Winery — Santa Fe
Santa Fe, TX, 6310 Avenue T · Wed 4pm–9pm, Thu–Sun noon–9pm; closed Mon–Tue
About 35 miles south on State Highway 6, Haak is the most decorated winery in the immediate Houston orbit — 570+ national and international awards since opening in 2000. Its signature wine is what the winery calls the Only Texas Madeira: the only oxidative-style fortified Madeira made in the state, produced using a centuries-old technique. The estate has a wedding chapel and event space; Wine Club members receive complimentary tastings on every visit. Tasting fees are not published online; call (409) 925-1401 to confirm.
Insider tip: combine this stop with a Galveston day trip — the island is just 25 more miles south.
Best for: anyone who wants a genuine vineyard estate without a two-hour drive.
Day trip north: Bernhardt Winery, Plantersville
9043 County Road 204, Plantersville, TX · Wed–Thu noon–5pm, Fri–Sat noon–6pm, Sun 1pm–6pm; closed Mon–Tue
About 55 miles north off FM 1774 near Magnolia, Bernhardt has made award-winning handcrafted wines since 2005. The guided wine tasting is typically $25 per person (walk-ins welcome, subject to availability); a private tour-and-tasting runs about $45. The winery's Clifford's Social House lounge is explicitly dog-friendly — unusual among Texas tasting rooms. The estate also hosts a sunset concert series and artisan markets. Tuscan-styled B&B rooms sit above the winery for those who want to stay the night.
Best for: couples, dog owners, and fans of live music. More nearby in our Tomball area guide.
The Brenham Wine Trail: two stops, one day trip
Brenham sits about 80 miles northwest of Houston on US-290, and two wineries cluster within a short drive of each other here. They sit on the Texas Bluebonnet Wine Trail. Plan to leave Houston by 9am to hit both. Arrange a designated driver — you will be tasting at each stop.
Haak Wines — Brenham
109 S Baylor St, Brenham · Thu 3pm–9pm, Fri–Sat 3pm–10pm, Sun 2pm–8pm; closed Mon–Wed
Haak's downtown Brenham tasting room is a completely different experience from the Santa Fe estate — there is no vineyard, but there is something harder to find: what the winery describes as the world's first video-mapping wine-tasting experience, with projection visuals synchronized to each wine poured. Gourmet charcuterie boards are available; wine appreciation classes run on weekends. Phone: (979) 286-2686.
36 North Vineyard — Brenham
7001 Hwy 36 N, Brenham · Thu–Sun noon–6pm; closed Mon–Wed
A five-acre farmhouse vineyard with a bakery and dessert shop on-site and a large rear deck. The relaxed setting — shade from a 130-year-old live oak, a working vineyard out back — makes this the most visually satisfying stop on the trail. Tasting fees were not listed on the website at time of research; call ahead before visiting.
Full wine country: Messina Hof Estate, Bryan
4545 Old Reliance Road, Bryan, TX · Mon–Tue 3pm–8pm, Wed–Sat 11am–9pm, Sun 11am–6pm
At about 100 miles from central Houston, the Bryan estate is the most complete wine experience within reach: a working vineyard, the Vintage House Restaurant with vineyard-view seating, bed-and-breakfast accommodations, and a walk-in wine-on-tap tasting bar. Messina Hof has been producing wine since 1977, making it one of Texas's longest-operating wineries. Tour-and-tasting packages run roughly $40 to $75 per person; the walk-in bar has happy hour pricing. This one works best as an overnight trip — the day trips from Houston guide has planning ideas for the area.
Save this: two wine routes
Urban afternoon: Decant to Pur Noire
- Start at Decant in Garden Oaks at 1pm on a Saturday for the tasting and a look at the production floor.
- Rideshare downtown to Pur Noire for the Grand tasting.
- Walk to dinner in downtown Houston.
The Brenham Wine Trail day trip
Arrange a designated driver. Leave Houston by 9am on US-290 west.
- 36 North Vineyard first — bakery brunch and an opening pour on the deck.
- Haak Brenham for the video-mapping tasting.
- Back in Houston by 6pm for dinner.
Before you go: checklist
- Confirm hours on each winery's own website the week you visit; hours shift and many close two days a week.
- Designate a driver or book a rideshare for any multi-stop route outside the city.
- Bring a small cooler for bottles you buy; Texas heat damages wine left in a hot trunk.
- Dogs are welcome at Bernhardt's Clifford's Social House and at Haak Santa Fe's property; call others to confirm before bringing yours.
- Messina Hof and Haak both run Wine Clubs — members get complimentary tastings on every visit.
