Best Tacos in Meyerland: 8 Taquerias, Tex-Mex and Kosher Picks

Date Published

The best tacos in Meyerland are the street tacos and fresh fish tacos at Los Tios on Beechnut Street, the mahi and shrimp tacos at Escalante's in Meyerland Plaza, and the Tacos El Ranchero at El Ranchero on North Braeswood Boulevard. For something you won't find elsewhere in Houston, order the pulled-beef tacos with consommé at Saba's Grill & Wok, a glatt kosher restaurant on South Braeswood. All eight picks below are in Houston's 77096 ZIP code.

Here's the thing most taco lists miss: Meyerland's taco map is half Tex-Mex and half kosher. Three of the eight spots on this list are certified kosher, which means fish tacos made with tilapia or mahi-mahi, beef tacos with no cheese at all, and kitchens that close early on Friday and stay shut on Saturday. Plan around that and you'll eat very well. Ignore it and you'll find a locked door.

What counts as Meyerland for this guide?

For this guide, Meyerland is the southwest Houston neighborhood from Loop 610 west to Fondren Road, and from Beechnut Street (both sides of the street) south to West Bellfort Avenue. That's the same boundary we use in our Meyerland breakfast guide and Meyerland pizza guide.

The blocks between Hillcroft Avenue and Fondren Road are technically the Braeburn area. We include them because the South Braeswood and Fondren corridor is where Meyerland's kosher restaurants cluster, and locals treat it as part of the neighborhood. We left out the separate City of Bellaire to the north (it has its own Bellaire taco guide), anything east of Loop 610, and the taquerias, taco trucks and chains on South Post Oak Road and the south side of West Bellfort. They're close, but they're not Meyerland.

The quick list

  • The Meyerland classic: Los Tios, 4840 Beechnut St, the family of restaurants that says it served Houston's first frozen margarita in 1975.
  • Best seafood tacos: Escalante's Fine Tex-Mex, 590 Meyerland Plaza, for mahi and shrimp tacos on handmade tortillas.
  • Best weekday lunch tacos: El Ranchero Mexican Restaurant & Cantina, 5300 N Braeswood Blvd.
  • Most surprising tacos: Saba's Grill & Wok, 5413 S Braeswood Blvd, kosher pulled-beef tacos with consommé.
  • Best kosher fish tacos: Saba's Restaurant, 9704 Fondren Rd.
  • Best date-night taco starter: Exodus Bar & Grill, 80 Braeswood Square.
  • Fastest build-your-own: Chipotle Meyerland Crossing, 8825 W Loop S.
  • Kosher Mexican dinner: Mexicano, 9804 Hillcroft St.

How we chose

Every pick had to meet three tests: an address inside the boundary above, tacos on the current menu, and proof that it's operating on its own website, official menu or official store page as of November 2026. One pick, Mexicano, is confirmed through the Houston Kashruth Association's restaurant listing because it doesn't have a working website of its own; we say so in its entry.

We're honest about the shape of the neighborhood: Meyerland doesn't have a cluster of stand-alone taquerias or a taco truck with a public schedule inside these streets. What it has is long-running Tex-Mex dining rooms, kosher kitchens that take tacos seriously, and a chain or two for speed. If you want truck-style tacos, our taco trucks in Houston guide is the place to start.

Hours change, especially around Jewish holidays at the kosher spots, so treat every schedule below as typical and check the restaurant's site before you go.

Tex-Mex dining rooms

Los Tios

Meyerland, 4840 Beechnut St · Tex-Mex · open daily

Los Tios is the old guard of Meyerland Tex-Mex. The Garbett family started Los Tios in 1970, the Adair family bought it in 2000, and the restaurant says many Houstonians had their first frozen margarita there in 1975, when it introduced the city's first. That's your quotable fact for the table.

The taco section is deeper than most Tex-Mex menus. Order the street tacos, five double-stacked mini corn tortillas with beef or chicken, onion and cilantro, or the fresh fish tacos, grilled Texas redfish on made-to-order corn tortillas with red cabbage, avocado, raspberry chipotle sauce and queso fresco. Fans of the old-school crunch should get the deluxe tacos, crispy shells with taco meat, pico de gallo, queso fresco and house guacamole.

Hours: typically 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily at Beechnut, with Sunday breakfast from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Check the Los Tios locations page.

Best for: a family dinner, out-of-town guests, and anyone who wants the frozen margarita with history attached. Our best margaritas in Houston guide has more.

Escalante's Fine Tex-Mex

Meyerland Plaza, 590 Meyerland Plaza · Tex-Mex · open daily

Escalante's Fine Tex-Mex in Meyerland Plaza is the polished option. The first Escalante's opened in Houston in 1993, built on the recipes of co-founder Pat Torres's grandmother, Barbara Escalante, and the restaurant makes its flour and corn tortillas by hand to order.

Order the Mahi tacos or Tacos de Camarones if you want seafood, the Street Tacos (four steak tacos) if you want something simple, or Tacos al Carbón in chicken, steak or combo. The Taco Trio lets you pick three crispy or soft tacos.

Insider tip: at happy hour, typically Monday to Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. and served only at the bar, Escalante's puts street tacos, chicken or steak, on the happy-hour menu in two-taco orders. See the Meyerland location page for current hours.

Best for: a sit-down taco dinner with queso and a patio crowd.

El Ranchero Mexican Restaurant & Cantina

Braeswood Square, 5300 N Braeswood Blvd · family Tex-Mex · open daily

El Ranchero sits in Braeswood Square at North Braeswood Boulevard and Chimney Rock Road. The Pérez family founded it in 2000 and calls it a neighborhood staple in the Meyerland and Braeswood area. It's the most traditional, menu-the-size-of-a-placemat stop on this list.

On the weekday lunch menu, order the Tacos El Ranchero: two corn tacos with fajita beef or chicken topped with cilantro and onion, with charro beans on the side. At dinner, try the Fish Tacos with diced mango and red cabbage pico de gallo, or a plate of crispy tacos.

Insider tip: El Ranchero's happy-hour margarita prices typically run all day on Monday and Tuesday, per its official site.

Hours: typically 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Best for: a cheap-and-cheerful lunch and Monday margaritas.

Kosher tacos

Saba's Grill & Wok

Meyerland, 5413 S Braeswood Blvd · glatt kosher meat · closed Saturday

Saba's Grill & Wok is a certified glatt kosher meat restaurant under both the Houston Kashruth Association (HKA) and Mehadrin Kashrus of Texas (MKT), with a menu that runs from Chinese stir-fries to Israeli grill. The taco list is the surprise: five kinds, all in the appetizer section of the grill menu.

Order the Pulled Beef Tacos, slow-braised beef with cilantro and onion served with a consommé for dipping, the kosher answer to a birria order. The Steak Tacos come with sliced rib eye, cucumber, avocado and a spicy sauce, and the Fried Fish Tacos use tempura-fried mahi-mahi with pickled slaw and pickled onion. There are also Baja Chicken Tacos and Salmon Tacos, plus Chicken Flautas if you want something rolled.

Why no cheese? Kosher law doesn't allow meat and dairy together, so the meat tacos here come without cheese and lean on sauces instead.

Hours: typically 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, closed Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Check sabasgrillandwok.com.

Best for: the most unusual taco plate in Meyerland.

Saba's Restaurant

Braeburn side, 9704 Fondren Rd · kosher dairy · closed Saturday

Saba's Restaurant is the dairy half of the Saba's family: a kosher, family-owned restaurant serving dairy and pareve food since 2001. Because it's dairy, this is the kosher spot where cheese is back on the table.

Order the Fish Taco's (the menu's spelling), three corn tortillas with fried tilapia, lettuce, tomato, onion and avocado, or the Salmon Taco's with grilled salmon and avocado. In the morning, the Tex-Mex Taco's are scrambled eggs and cheddar in corn tortillas with beans, rice and pico.

Hours: typically 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, closed Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, per Saba's official site.

Best for: fish tacos and a kosher breakfast taco.

Mexicano

Meyerland, 9804 Hillcroft St · glatt kosher meat · Sunday to Thursday

Mexicano on Hillcroft Street in Meyerland is a kosher meat restaurant built around Mexican food, in the heart of Houston's Jewish community. It's listed by the Houston Kashruth Association, which gives its hours as typically Sunday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Ask for the beef tacos and check what else is on the menu that day. Mexicano doesn't have a working website of its own, so confirm hours on the HKA restaurant list before you go.

Best for: a kosher meat dinner when you want Mexican flavors.

Quick and casual

Exodus Bar & Grill

Braeswood Square, 80 Braeswood Square · steakhouse and bar · open daily

Exodus Bar & Grill, a steakhouse and bar that describes itself as located in the heart of Meyerland, isn't a taco restaurant, but its Short Rib Tacos are worth knowing about: an order of two in flour tortillas with pico de gallo, guacamole and grilled onions, listed as an appetizer. Exodus also offers kosher chicken or beef for an additional price, according to its menu.

On Monday and Tuesday, Exodus typically opens at 3 p.m.; other days it serves lunch. Check exodusbarandgrill.com for current hours.

Best for: a taco starter before a steak, a short walk from El Ranchero in the same shopping center.

Chipotle Meyerland Crossing

Meyerland, 8825 W Loop S · fast casual · open daily

Chipotle at Meyerland Crossing, near Loop 610 and Beechnut Street, is the fastest way to build your own tacos in the neighborhood. Its hours are typically 10:45 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, per its official location page.

Best for: a quick weeknight dinner and the latest taco stop on a Saturday, when the kosher spots are closed.

Save this: a Meyerland taco plan

The Braeswood Square double (lunch or early dinner)

  1. Start at El Ranchero for Tacos El Ranchero at weekday lunch, or crispy tacos at dinner.
  2. Walk across the same Braeswood Square parking lot to Exodus for an order of short rib tacos to share.
  3. Make it Monday or Tuesday for El Ranchero's all-day margarita deal, but remember Exodus doesn't open until 3 p.m. on those days.

Before you go: a quick checklist

  • Saturday? Skip Saba's Grill & Wok, Saba's Restaurant and Mexicano. They're closed for Shabbat.
  • Friday? The two Saba's close mid-afternoon, typically by 3:30 p.m.
  • Want cheese on a kosher taco? Go to the dairy Saba's on Fondren, not the meat restaurants.
  • Want the frozen margarita with a backstory? Los Tios on Beechnut.
  • Seafood mood? Mahi at Escalante's, redfish at Los Tios, tilapia at Saba's, mango-topped fish at El Ranchero.
  • Check hours on each official site before you drive. Holidays change the kosher schedules.
