- Best Pizza in Downtown Houston: Late Slices, Wood-Fired Pies, Delivery
Downtown Houston's pizza map runs on a strange clock. A downtown hotel fires made-to-order pies in a dome-shaped oven, but only at Friday and Saturday dinner. A trattoria across the street from Daikin Park serves wood-fired pizza seven days a week. And a slice shop in the Historic District keeps its oven going until 3 a.m. on weekends, long after the towers have emptied out.
This is the shortlist we'd hand a friend looking for pizza in Downtown Houston. It's sorted by style, then by how you want to eat it: at a table, at a bar, or at your desk.
The quick list
- For a slice at 2 a.m.: Frank's Pizza on Travis.
- For pizza before an Astros game: Osso & Kristalla, across the street from Daikin Park.
- For pizza before a convention or a Rockets game: Grotto, connected to the George R. Brown Convention Center.
- For a weekend date night: Rosalie Italian Soul in the C. Baldwin Hotel.
- For unlimited toppings at one price: Pizza Zquare in Finn Hall.
- For pizza with a serious beer list: Flying Saucer on Main.
- For a big group on a budget: Birraporetti's on Louisiana, where groups of eight can score free pizzas at happy hour.
- For delivery to a downtown office: Domino's on McKinney.
Where Downtown starts and stops
"Downtown" gets stretched to cover EaDo, Midtown and anything with a skyline view, so we kept it strict. A pizza spot made this guide only if the Downtown Houston district lists it in its own downtown dining directory or its Italian listings, with a downtown address. In practice that's the core of the city: from the Historic District near Buffalo Bayou, through the Theater District and the Main Street corridor, to the convention center and ballpark on the east side. Places in EaDo, Midtown or across the bayou are left out, however good they are.
How we chose
We started with every pizza-serving business in the district's pizza and Italian listings, then kept only the places that show a current downtown address and hours on their own official website. Each one had to give you a reason to choose it: a late oven, a wood fire, a great location, or a deal you won't find on a delivery app.
That left eight. We'd rather give you eight places we could confirm than pad the list with spots whose websites have gone dark. Hours change, and several downtown restaurants keep office-tower schedules, so treat every time below as "typically" and check the restaurant's own site before you go.
Slices and classic pies
Frank's Pizza
Historic District, 417 Travis St · dine-in, take-out, delivery · open daily, late on weekends
Frank's is the downtown slice that outlasts the night. It sits in the Historic District and makes hand-tossed pies with dough and sauce made from scratch every day. The menu runs well past pizza, to lasagna, spicy wings, burgers, sandwiches and salads, which makes it easy for a mixed group.
I didn't know that: Frank's typically stays open until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and until 1 a.m. on Thursdays. On weekends, that makes it the latest pizza oven on this list.
What to order: a slice or two at the counter, or a whole pie to share.
Best for: the end of a night out. It's on the same street as Warren's Inn, so a nightcap and a slice make an easy pair. Pickup and delivery orders go through DoorDash, or call the restaurant for pickup.
Pizza Zquare
Finn Hall, 712 Main St · dine-in and take-out · weekdays and Saturdays
Pizza Zquare sits on the ground floor of Finn Hall, the food hall on Main Street, and its pitch is simple: unlimited toppings at one price per size. Pick a base (tomato, basil pesto, or tomato with barbecue), a cheese, and as many toppings as you like from a list that runs from artichoke hearts and kalamata olives to andouille sausage. Sizes go from a personal "zquare" to a sharable one to a "big party" zquare, and a gluten-free crust is available.
Insider tip: the lunch combo pairs a slice with a salad and a drink, which is about as quick as a downtown lunch gets.
Best for: a fast weekday lunch, or a group that can never agree on toppings. Hours typically run from lunch into the evening, later Thursday to Saturday.
Domino's (McKinney St)
975 McKinney St · delivery or carryout · open daily, late
It's a chain, and we include it for one reason: delivery. This store sits right in the downtown core and typically runs from 10 a.m. to midnight, and to 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, so it's the fallback for a late night at the office or a hotel room with no room service. Order through the store's own page to see current deals.
Best for: delivery to an office tower or a downtown apartment.
Wood-fired and Italian
Osso & Kristalla
Ballpark side, 1515 Texas Ave · lunch, dinner, weekend brunch · open daily
Osso & Kristalla is a modern Italian trattoria from Astros owner Jim Crane, across the street from Daikin Park, and it calls itself the team's headquarters. The pizzas come out of a wood-fired oven, and the list is short and well chosen: a Margherita with charred tomato, a Funghi with mushrooms, fontina, kale and truffle oil, a Prosciutto & Pear with honey-whipped ricotta and arugula, and a Pepperoni Diavola with jalapeño.
What to order: the Crawford, loaded with smoked ham, pepperoni and fennel sausage, if you're feeding a hungry fan.
Insider tip: gluten-free pizzas are available on request, and happy hour typically runs Tuesday to Friday afternoons and all day Monday. Brunch is on Saturdays and Sundays. Pair it with our Daikin Park guide.
Best for: pizza and a glass of wine before first pitch.
Rosalie Italian Soul
C. Baldwin Hotel, 400 Dallas St · breakfast, weekday lunch, Friday and Saturday dinner
Rosalie serves Italian-American comfort food with a Houston edge, and its pizzas are made to order: stretched, sauced and fired in a dome-shaped oven. The pizza list is short (a pepperoni, an Italian Margherita, and a Meat Lovers finished with honey), and it sits alongside handmade pastas and family-style plates in a 145-seat dining room.
I didn't know that: the hotel Rosalie lives in is named after Charlotte Baldwin Allen, known as the "Mother of Houston." Your pizza comes with a history lesson.
Watch the clock: dinner is typically served only on Friday and Saturday evenings, with lunch Monday to Thursday and breakfast on weekdays. The restaurant is closed on Sundays. Valet parking runs through the hotel and is added to your bill.
Best for: a weekend date night before a show. Rosalie says it's less than a 10-minute walk from the Theater District light rail station; see our Theater District guide for what's on.
Grotto Ristorante
Avenida Houston, 1001 Avenida de las Americas · lunch, dinner, happy hour · open daily
Grotto Downtown is connected to the George R. Brown Convention Center and within walking distance of Daikin Park, Toyota Center and Discovery Green. The restaurant says no other Grotto looks like this one: it has a rustic, warehouse-style room with exposed brick. The pizza list runs from a classic Margherita and a pepperoni with fontina to a Wild Mushroom with goat cheese and the "Meatzza," piled with pepperoni, meatballs, Italian sausage and pancetta.
What to order: the Chicken Bianca, with parmesan ranch, crispy bacon and chili honey, plus whatever the chef's seasonal feature pie is.
Best for: convention days and pre-game dinners. Weekday happy hour typically runs 3 to 7 p.m., and Grotto takes pickup and delivery orders through its own site and the major delivery apps.
Pizza at the bar
Flying Saucer Draught Emporium
705 Main St at Capitol · bar with 12-inch pies · open daily
Flying Saucer is a beer bar first, and that's the point: the "Saucer Pies" are 12-inch pizzas built to go with a long tap list. The Ultimate Pepperoni uses three kinds of pepperoni with shaved parm and hot honey, and there's a Prosciutto and Arugula pie and a build-your-own Pick-Your-Pie.
I didn't know that: Flying Saucer's UFO Club tracks every beer you taste. Reach 200 and your name goes on a plate mounted on the wall, "or ceiling, or wherever we can fit it," in the bar's own words, with a ceremony to match.
Best for: pizza and beer after work. Hours typically run 11 a.m. to midnight daily, and you can order online for pickup or delivery.
Birraporetti's
500 Louisiana St · Italian restaurant and bar · open daily
Birraporetti's is a full Italian menu of pastas, piccata and eggplant parmigiana, with a cheese pizza on the appetizer list that you can build up with extra toppings. It's on this list for its happy hour.
Insider tip: Monday to Thursday, 3 to 6 p.m., parties of eight or more get two free pizzas, as long as everyone orders at least one alcoholic drink. The deal is only at the bar and MidBar, so tell the host when you arrive.
Best for: an office happy hour. Hours typically run to 11 p.m., and to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
Dine in or delivery?
Downtown pizza splits neatly by how you want to eat.
- Best for delivery: Domino's on McKinney, which is built for it, and Frank's, which delivers through DoorDash. Grotto and Flying Saucer also take delivery orders online. Russo's New York Pizzeria, just south in Midtown, also lists downtown in its delivery area.
- Best for pickup on the way home: Frank's, Pizza Zquare and Osso & Kristalla.
- Best eaten in the restaurant: Rosalie and Osso & Kristalla, where the pizza goes straight from a hot oven to your table.
- Best with a crowd: Birraporetti's for the happy-hour deal, Grotto for convention groups, and Flying Saucer for beer.
Save this: a Thursday pizza crawl
Thursday is the one night the happy-hour deal and the late oven line up. One evening, four stops, no repeats. Downtown is compact, and the tunnels help on hot weekdays, but this route is built for after dark, on the street.
- Birraporetti's on Louisiana, between 3 and 6 p.m. Bring seven friends, order a round, claim the free pizzas.
- Flying Saucer on Main. Split an Ultimate Pepperoni and start your 200-beer count.
- Osso & Kristalla on Texas Ave. A wood-fired Funghi across from the ballpark.
- Frank's on Travis, before 1 a.m. Finish with a late slice. (On Fridays and Saturdays you have until 3 a.m., but you'll miss the free pizzas.)
Before you go: a quick checklist
- Check hours on the restaurant's own site the day you go. Rosalie serves dinner only on Fridays and Saturdays and closes on Sundays.
- After 11 p.m., your best bets are Frank's (to 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday) and Domino's for delivery.
- Going to a game? Osso & Kristalla and Grotto are the closest sit-down pizza to the stadiums.
- Driving? Rosalie offers valet through the hotel and Osso & Kristalla points you to street parking. Our downtown parking guide covers garages and event-day rates.
- Gluten-free? Pizza Zquare has a gluten-free crust, and Osso & Kristalla makes gluten-free pizza on request.
