Best Mexican Restaurants in the Heights: Tex-Mex, Tacos, Margaritas

Date Published

Mexican restaurants Heights illustration: margarita, tacos and a bungalow porch with papel picado under the Houston skyline

In the Heights, you can eat Tex-Mex at a restaurant founded by a Mexican wrestling champion, order a breakfast taco at 7 a.m. and a barbacoa taco at 2 a.m., and buy pan dulce before sunrise, all without leaving the neighborhood. That range is the point of this guide: the best Mexican restaurants in the Heights aren't one style, they're a whole day of eating.

This is the shortlist we'd give a friend who lives off 19th Street and wants to know where to go for fajitas, where to take visitors for a margarita, and where to get a taco when everything else is closed.

What we mean by "the Heights"

For this guide, the Heights means the Greater Heights: Loop 610 to the north, I-10 to the south, T.C. Jester Boulevard to the west, and the North Main Street and Airline Drive corridor to the east. That takes in the historic Houston Heights plus neighbors like Woodland Heights and Norhill. Places just outside those lines, however good, aren't on this list. For the wider neighborhood, start with our Heights area page.

The quick list

  • For a sit-down Tex-Mex dinner with history: Cyclone Anaya's on Durham Drive.
  • For mesquite-grilled fajitas and weekend brunch: Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina on Yale Street.
  • For a breakfast taco built your way: Tacos A Go Go on Yale Street.
  • For tacos and whiskey on an icehouse patio: Eight Row Flint.
  • For a 3 a.m. plate of enchiladas: Spanish Flowers on North Main.
  • For a late-night taco window: Cantina Barba on North Main.
  • For green chile queso with a crowd: Torchy's Tacos on West 19th Street.
  • For pan dulce at 5:30 a.m.: El Bolillo Bakery on Airline Drive.

How we chose

We looked for places that do one Mexican or Tex-Mex thing especially well: a margarita program, a taco you'll crave, a late-night kitchen, a family story worth knowing. Every pick had to be inside our Heights boundary and show a current address and hours on its own official website or ordering page as of October 2026.

We left out places we couldn't confirm from an official source, and places just across the line. Hours change, so treat every schedule below as "typically" and check the restaurant's site before you go.

Tex-Mex institutions and margaritas

Cyclone Anaya's

Houston Heights, 1710 Durham Dr · Tex-Mex · margaritas and happy hour

Here's the story most diners don't know: Cyclone Anaya was a professional wrestler who, according to the family, became Champion of Mexico at 17. He married Carolina, a former Miss Houston, and when he hung up his boots the couple turned to restaurants. The family says it has been serving Houston since 1966.

The menu leads with what it calls Cyclone's Legendary Margaritas, served frozen or on the rocks with your choice of salt or Tajín, and a jumbo house margarita is on the weekday happy hour menu. Happy hour typically runs 3 to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday. For food, go with the sizzling fajitas or one of the enchilada plates.

Best for: a birthday dinner, out-of-town family, or anyone who wants big plates and bigger margaritas.

Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina

Houston Heights, 1801 Yale St · Tex-Mex with a mesquite grill · weekend brunch

Goode Company's Tex-Mex cantina puts its mesquite grill front and center. Start with the made-to-order guacamole, where you choose three toppers like chicharron, toasted pepitas or roasted garlic, and add the campechana, a Mexican-style seafood cocktail with avocado and fire-roasted Anaheim chiles. Then order fajitas off the mesquite grill.

Insider tip: the Heights location typically opens at 9 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays for weekend brunch, earlier than its 11 a.m. weekday start.

Best for: a family meal that pleases both the queso crowd and the seafood crowd. See more brunch ideas in our best brunch in Houston guide.

Spanish Flowers

North Main, 4701 N Main St · Mexican and Tex-Mex · open 24 hours on weekends

Spanish Flowers has been serving Houston since 1979, and the family says it's best known for homemade menudo. The menu runs from breakfast to enchiladas and fajitas, built on family recipes. The North Main location is the one to know after dark: it typically runs 24 hours through the weekend, so check its site for the exact weekday closing time. There's also a Spanish Flowers on Durham Drive with regular dinner hours.

Best for: menudo on a Saturday morning, or a full Tex-Mex plate long after the bars close. For more after-midnight options, see our late-night food guide.

Taquerias and taco counters

Tacos A Go Go

Houston Heights, 1102 Yale St · taqueria · breakfast tacos all day

Tacos A Go Go opened its first shop in 2006 on Main Street, next to the Continental Club, and its Heights location on Yale is a neighborhood morning habit. The breakfast taco is the draw: pick two toppings, scrambled with eggs, on flour or corn. The shop says there are over a million possible combinations, which means you're allowed to keep experimenting. The migas taco, with spicy chili verde and tortilla strips, is our pick.

The Heights shop typically opens at 7 a.m. every day and stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Add chips with habanero queso blanco and a margarita if it's later in the day.

Best for: the breakfast taco run. It also anchors our best breakfast in Houston guide.

Eight Row Flint

Houston Heights, 1039 Yale St · icehouse with tacos · patio

Eight Row Flint describes itself as a revisionist icehouse that celebrates whiskey mash and masa, which is about the best one-line summary of a Heights afternoon we've read. The tacos come on stone-ground corn tortillas made in house every day. Order the beef cheek barbacoa and the smoked pork lechon, and add a Juarez-style burrito if you're sharing.

It typically opens at 11 a.m. daily and stays open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Best for: tacos with a group, a big patio and a serious whiskey list. Pair it with our best happy hour in Houston guide.

Cantina Barba

North Main, 3701 N Main St · taco counter and bar · open very late

Cantina Barba is the neighborhood's late shift. It typically opens at 9 a.m. and stays open until 2 a.m. Sunday to Thursday and 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The menu is short and focused: al pastor with pineapple pico de gallo, barbacoa made from beef cheeks simmered in adobo, carne asada, and a mesquite-smoked pork taco. Breakfast tacos and a barbacoa-egg-and-queso-fresco "Barbacoa Deluxe" cover the morning.

Best for: a taco after a show at White Oak Music Hall, just down North Main. See our things to do in the Heights for the rest of the night.

Torchy's Tacos

Houston Heights, 350 W 19th St · Texas taco chain · queso

Torchy's is an Austin-born chain, not a Heights original, but its 19th Street shop earns a spot for one reason: the green chile queso, topped with guacamole, cotija, cilantro and Diablo sauce. Order the Trailer Park taco with it and you have the classic Torchy's meal. It's a reliable stop while you shop the 19th Street strip.

Best for: a casual lunch between 19th Street boutiques. Our best tacos in Houston guide covers the citywide taco map.

Pan dulce

El Bolillo Bakery

Greater Heights, 2517 Airline Dr · Mexican bakery · open daily from 5:30 a.m.

El Bolillo started in 1998 as a small Mexican bakery on Airline Drive in the Greater Heights, and that original neighborhood shop is still here. The bakery says it makes about 150 varieties of pan dulce, pan salado, pastries and desserts by hand, fresh every day. The Heights location typically opens at 5:30 a.m. daily and stays open until 10 p.m.

Pick up a box of conchas on the way to work and you've solved breakfast for the office.

Best for: early risers and anyone bringing dessert to a party.

Save this: a Heights Mexican food day

  1. 5:30 to 8 a.m.: pan dulce and coffee at El Bolillo on Airline Drive.
  2. Mid-morning: a migas breakfast taco at Tacos A Go Go on Yale, then walk it off on the Heights Boulevard trail.
  3. Lunch: green chile queso at Torchy's on West 19th, then browse the shops.
  4. Happy hour, weekdays: a jumbo margarita at Cyclone Anaya's on Durham Drive.
  5. Dinner: mesquite-grilled fajitas at Goode Co. Kitchen & Cantina on Yale.
  6. Late: barbacoa tacos at Cantina Barba, or enchiladas at Spanish Flowers if it's a Friday or Saturday and you're still going after 3 a.m.

Don't drink and drive between stops; the Yale Street spots are close enough to walk or bike between.

Before you go: a quick checklist

  • Check hours on the restaurant's own site the day you go, especially for late-night plans.
  • Weekend brunch at Goode Co. starts earlier than weekdays; arrive near opening to skip the wait.
  • Happy hour at Cyclone Anaya's is a weekday thing.
  • For the 24-hour weekend experience, go to the North Main Spanish Flowers, not the Durham Drive location.
  • Bring a big appetite to El Bolillo, and a box for the car.
