- Date Night in the Museum District: 11 Dinners, Drinks and Walks
For a date night in the Museum District, book dinner at Le Jardinier inside the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston or at Lucille's on La Branch Street, then walk the art. On Thursdays, MFAH general admission is free and both MFAH and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH) stay open until 9pm. Finish with a cocktail on Monarch's terrace at Hotel ZaZa or on The Branch's 12th-floor rooftop.
Here's the line to send your date: our favorite romantic hallway in Houston is underground. James Turrell's The Light Inside, a tunnel between two MFAH buildings, washes you in slowly shifting colored light, and on a Thursday it costs nothing to walk through.
This guide sticks to 11 picks inside the district: five places to eat and drink and six things to do before or after. Each one was checked on its own official website.
Where is the Museum District?
For this guide, the Museum District is the area bounded by US-59 (the Southwest Freeway) to the north, SH-288 to the east, Brays Bayou to the south, and Montrose Boulevard to the west, then Main Street south of the Mecom Fountain. That takes in Hermann Park and leaves out Rice University and Rice Village.
It also leaves out two places people often lump in: the Menil Collection and the Rothko Chapel sit just west of Montrose Boulevard, in Montrose. They make a lovely add-on, and our Montrose date night guide covers that side of the line.
The quick list
- The big-occasion dinner: Le Jardinier, a Michelin-starred French restaurant inside MFAH.
- Southern cooking with a family story: Lucille's on La Branch Street.
- A late drink with a view: Monarch at Hotel ZaZa, open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
- A rooftop: The Branch, on the 12th floor of The Forme.
- An easy, low-key dinner: Barnaby's Cafe on Binz Street.
- Free things to do: MFAH on Thursdays, CAMH, the Cullen Sculpture Garden, Hermann Park and Miller Outdoor Theatre.
- A Tuesday plan: free evening admission at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.
How we chose
We looked for places that make a date feel like an occasion: a room worth dressing up for, a view, a walk, or something you'll talk about on the drive home. Every pick sits inside the boundary above and posted current hours, menus or schedules on its own official website when we checked in November 2026.
We left out places we couldn't confirm, including cafés that list no current hours online. Hours and prices change, so treat everything below as "typically" and check each official site before you go.
Where to eat and drink
Le Jardinier
Inside MFAH, 5500 Main Street, Suite 122 · French · dinner nightly, lunch Wednesday to Sunday
Le Jardinier is the Museum District's big-night dinner. It sits on the west side of the Kinder Building at MFAH, it is Michelin-starred, according to the restaurant, and its seasonal French menus are designed, in the restaurant’s words, to connect guests to nature. Dinner typically runs nightly from 5pm (until 9pm Sunday and Monday, 10pm other nights).
What to order: the chef's seasonal four-course menu if you want the evening planned for you (it changes with the seasons, and the whole table typically orders it). Or share small plates at the bar.
Insider tip: the dessert list includes a "Culinary Canvas Series" dish inspired by a current MFAH exhibition, so dessert can echo the art you just saw. The bar also runs drink specials Monday to Thursday from 5pm to 6:30pm.
Lucille's
5512 La Branch Street · Southern · complimentary valet
Lucille's serves refined Southern food on La Branch Street. Brothers Chris and Ben Williams opened it in August 2012 as a tribute to their great-grandmother Lucille B. Smith, an educator and entrepreneur who founded her own food company. Some of her recipes are still on the menu. Chef Chris Williams has been a James Beard Award finalist, according to the restaurant.
What to order: the Famous Chili Biscuits, made with Great Grandma's biscuit recipe, then braised oxtails or shrimp and grits. Split the croissant bread pudding. Many of the vegetables come from the restaurant's own 1913 Farms, so the menu changes with the seasons.
Why it works for a date: free valet takes the parking stress out of the night, and it's a short walk from The Branch for a drink afterward.
Monarch at Hotel ZaZa
Hotel ZaZa Museum District · restaurant, lounge and terrace · open late
Monarch is the Museum District's late-night option. The restaurant and lounge at Hotel ZaZa typically stay open until midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 2am Friday and Saturday, with a live DJ on Saturdays from 10pm to 1am. Ask for the terrace, which looks out over MFAH and the Mecom Fountain.
What to order: a Social Hour cocktail such as The Love Drop (vodka, hibiscus and limoncello) with the burrata, or go big with caviar service from the dinner menu.
Did you know? Menu items marked (Z) come with a $1 donation from Hotel ZaZa to cancer research for each one sold.
The Branch
The Forme, 5501 La Branch Street, 12th floor · rooftop cocktails and raw bar · Thursday to Sunday evenings
The Branch is a rooftop cocktail and raw bar on the 12th floor of The Forme residential and hotel tower, with skyline views. It comes from the same group behind Lucille's, which is right across La Branch Street. The raw bar typically opens from noon Thursday to Sunday, with happy hour Thursday to Sunday from 4pm to 6pm.
What to order: a cocktail, or one of the zero-proof mocktails if one of you isn't drinking, with something from the raw bar.
Heads-up: the website notes that full hours are "coming soon," so check before you go, especially early in the week.
Barnaby's Cafe (Museum District)
1801 Binz Street · American comfort food · lunch and dinner daily
Not every date needs a tasting menu. Barnaby's is the relaxed choice: comfort food, a wine list and a neighborhood feel. It typically serves lunch and dinner Monday to Friday from 11am to 9pm and weekends from 11:30am to 9pm. Note the early close, and plan on Barnaby's before a show at Miller or a Thursday museum visit, not after.
What to do before or after dinner
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston on a Thursday
Free general admission on Thursdays · open until 9pm Thursday and Friday
On Thursdays, general admission to MFAH's permanent collections is free, and the museum stays open until 9pm. Special exhibitions need a separate ticket. The museum is also open until 9pm on Fridays, so a Friday works too if you buy tickets.
Don't miss: James Turrell's The Light Inside, the tunnel linking the Caroline Wiess Law Building and the Audrey Jones Beck Building. It's a dark passage lit by colored light that shifts slowly as you walk. Our MFAH guide has the full plan.
Cullen Sculpture Garden
MFAH, along Montrose Boulevard · free
The Cullen Sculpture Garden at MFAH is a quiet, open-air room of 20th- and 21st-century sculpture, with works by Louise Bourgeois, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró and Auguste Rodin. It's the easiest pre-dinner stroll in the district, since Le Jardinier is a short walk away on the same campus. Check MFAH's site for the garden's hours.
Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH)
5216 Montrose Boulevard · always free · open until 9pm Thursday
CAMH shows rotating contemporary art, and admission is always free. It's typically open Wednesday to Sunday from 11am, until 9pm on Thursdays and 6pm on other days, and closed Monday and Tuesday. Street parking is free, and the METRORail Museum District stop is nearby. CAMH also hosts evening events like film screenings, so check its calendar. More in our CAMH guide.
Houston Museum of Natural Science (HMNS) on a Tuesday
Free general admission Tuesday 5pm to 8pm, first come, first served
HMNS stays open until 8pm on Tuesdays, and general admission is free from 5pm to 8pm. The Burke Baker Planetarium also runs late on Tuesdays, with the last show at 7pm (planetarium tickets are separate). Look at the stars, then go to dinner. HMNS also runs adults-only evening events. Plan with our HMNS guide.
Hermann Park at golden hour
Free · McGovern Centennial Gardens close at 5pm in fall and winter, 7pm in spring and summer
Hermann Park is the district's walk. Start at the Mecom Fountain, a gift to the city from John W. and Mary Mecom in 1964, and head into McGovern Centennial Gardens. Climb the Tudor Family Pine Hill Walk to the Friendship Pavilion, a gift from Houston's sister city Taipei, made for the 1976 Bicentennial.
Timing tip: the gardens and the Japanese Garden (designed by Ken Nakajima) close at 5pm in fall and winter, so on a winter date, walk before dinner, not after. Pedal boats on McGovern Lake typically run from 10am to 5pm. Our Hermann Park guide maps it all.
Miller Outdoor Theatre
6000 Hermann Park Drive · every show free
Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park puts on free shows during its season, from symphony and dance to film. Pack a picnic for the hill, or reserve free covered seats online from 10am the day before the show. Outside food and alcohol are allowed, but glass containers aren't, so bring your wine in cans or plastic. Coolers under the canopy have to fit under your seat. The closest free parking lots are A, C, F, G and H. See our Miller Outdoor Theatre guide.
