Date Night in the East End: 11 Dinners, Drinks and Walks

Date Published

Date night East End Houston illustration: papel picado arch, sizzling skillet and two glasses under the skyline

The best date night in Houston's East End is dinner on Navigation Boulevard, at the Original Ninfa's or Merida, followed by a lager at Equal Parts Brewing on Harrisburg Boulevard or a slow walk under the iron arch of the Navigation Esplanade. For something more casual, split an 18-inch pie at Neighbors or wild-game hot dogs at Moon Tower Inn.

Here's the part most Houstonians don't know: the Original Ninfa's on Navigation says Mama Ninfa Laurenzo created her tacos al carbon here in 1973, the dish “the whole world would eventually come to know as fajitas.” You can still order Mama Ninfa's Original Tacos al Carbon at the restaurant's original historic location.

The one-line version: in the East End you can eat the dish Ninfa's says became the fajita, drink a lager in a 1911 machinery warehouse, and walk off dinner under an iron arch shaped like papel picado.

Where is the East End?

The East End is the 16-square-mile stretch of Houston east of downtown and EaDo, covering Second Ward, Eastwood, Harrisburg and Magnolia Park. For this guide we use the East End District's official boundary: Clinton Drive on the north, Loop 610 on the east, Telephone Road to I-45 on the south, and the Houston Belt and Terminal Railroad to US 59 on the west. The warehouse grid around the stadiums is covered in our separate date night in EaDo guide.

The Texas Commission on the Arts named the East End a Texas cultural district in 2014, and the district counts more than 30 arts and culture institutions, which is why a gallery and a mural walk belong on a date-night list here.

The quick list

  • For the date with a story: the Original Ninfa's on Navigation, open since 1973.
  • For Yucatecan cooking: Merida, on the same stretch of Navigation since 1972.
  • For pizza and cocktails: Neighbors on Harrisburg Boulevard.
  • For a fun, low-key night: Moon Tower Inn and its wild-game hot dogs.
  • For a picnic date: takeout pasta from Eastwood Station, a kitchen in a train caboose.
  • For a drink you can actually talk over: Equal Parts Brewing, which has no TVs on purpose.
  • For a walk: the Navigation Esplanade, Guadalupe Plaza Park, or the wetland ponds at Buffalo Bend Nature Park.

How we chose

We picked places where two people can talk, plus a drink or a walk that stretches the night. Each pick had to sit inside the East End District boundary above and show a current address and hours on its own official website, or on an official city or nonprofit page for parks, when we checked in November 2026. We left out places whose sites had lapsed, were blocked or showed no current hours.

Hours change, so treat every time below as “typically” and check the venue's site before you go.

Dinner: where to eat on a date in the East End

1. The Original Ninfa's on Navigation

Second Ward, 2704 Navigation Blvd · Tex-Mex · lunch and dinner daily

The Original Ninfa's on Navigation is where Mama Ninfa Laurenzo started cooking in her family's tortilla factory in Houston's East End in 1973, according to the restaurant. It's typically open every day for lunch and dinner, with brunch on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and it takes reservations.

What to order: Mama Ninfa's Original Tacos al Carbon, which the menu says introduced the fajita to North America, or a fajita plate to share. Add the nachos, which Ninfa's bills as its original recipe.

Why it's a date: you're eating a piece of Houston food history, and the Navigation Esplanade is right out front for a walk after. More regional Mexican cooking is in our best Mexican restaurants in Houston guide.

2. Merida Mexican Restaurant

Second Ward, 2509 Navigation Blvd · Yucatecan and Tex-Mex · closes early Mondays

Merida has been part of Houston's East End since 1972, according to the restaurant, and is now run by its third generation. It serves Yucatecan and Tex-Mex cooking, typically from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday, and only until 3 p.m. on Mondays.

What to order: the cochinita pibil and panuchos, the two dishes Merida calls its signature favorites.

Insider tip: Merida and the Original Ninfa's opened a year apart on the same stretch of Navigation Boulevard, so you can eat at one and walk past the other on the esplanade.

3. Neighbors

Second Ward, 3401 Harrisburg Blvd · New York-style pizza and full bar · open daily

Neighbors on Harrisburg Boulevard is a pizza restaurant and bar serving 18-inch New York-style pies, slices, baked dishes, sandwiches, a Caesar salad and cocktails from a full bar. It typically opens at 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and 11 a.m. on weekends, and stays open until 1 a.m. Thursday to Saturday.

What to order: split a margherita or pepperoni pie and a Caesar salad, then stay for a cocktail.

Insider tip: weekday happy hour runs from 4 to 6 p.m., and its events calendar has listed live jazz nights, so check it before you pick a date.

4. Moon Tower Inn

Second Ward, 3004 Canal St · wild-game hot dogs and burgers · open late daily

Moon Tower Inn on Canal Street calls itself the keeper of “Hotdog Truth,” and its menu proves it: wild-game dogs on pretzel buns, from venison, elk and wild boar to duck foie gras, plus smash burgers and draft beer. It's typically open from 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and the kitchen closes 30 minutes before the posted closing time.

Best for: a laid-back date where nobody has to dress up.

5. Eastwood Station (for a picnic date)

Eastwood, 4109 McKinney St, Bldg B · Italian-inspired takeout · Wednesday to Sunday

Eastwood Station is a takeout-only kitchen serving Italian-inspired cooking out of a train caboose in Houston's East End, with fresh pasta, Roman-style pizza and panini. It's typically open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday, and the menu changes weekly.

How to make it a date: order online, pick up a pizza and a pasta, and take them to Guadalupe Plaza Park (below).

After dinner: drinks, art and music

6. Equal Parts Brewing

Second Ward, 3118 Harrisburg Blvd · brewery taproom · open daily

Equal Parts Brewing pours its beer in a taproom that was built in 1911 and rebuilt after a fire in 1948, with its original brickwork, window frames and flooring. Until the early 2000s, the brewery says, the building housed a heavy construction equipment supplier. It's typically open from 1 to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday, noon to midnight Friday and Saturday, and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday.

Why it's a date: the taproom has no TVs, and the brewery says that's intentional. There's no kitchen, but food is usually on site, or bring your own.

Insider tip: Equal Parts is a block or two from the Coffee Plant / Second Ward stop on METRORail's Green Line. More local beer is in our best breweries in Houston guide.

7. Bohemeo's

East End, 708 Telephone Rd · coffee, food, beer and live music · open daily

Bohemeo's on Telephone Road has been on Houston's east side since 2006, serving coffee, food, craft beer, live music and local art. It's typically open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.

Best for: an early-evening date with a show. Check its site for music nights and order the Bo's Baja fish or shrimp taco. More cafes are in our East End coffee shops guide.

8. Box 13 ArtSpace (for a Saturday date)

Harrisburg, 6700 Harrisburg Blvd · artist-run gallery · Saturdays 1 to 5 p.m. during exhibitions

Box 13 ArtSpace is an artist-run nonprofit gallery and studio building in a two-story brick former sewing machine factory and showroom. It was founded in January 2008, and that September, Hurricane Ike blew out every window in the downstairs gallery. The windows were boarded up, an artist painted a mural on the plywood, and the shows went on.

What to do: walk the three interior galleries and the window gallery, then look for the 100-foot outdoor wall the space dedicates to murals. Box 13 also runs figure-drawing nights and workshops, which make a good hands-on date. More galleries are in our Houston art galleries guide.

Where to walk after dinner in the East End

9. The Navigation Esplanade

Second Ward, 2600 block of Navigation Blvd · free · public space

The Navigation Esplanade is the wide, shaded median in front of the Original Ninfa's, rebuilt by the East End District and opened in fall 2013. Look up at the iron archway over the boulevard, made to look like papel picado and showing ships, railroads and oil, then look down: the faux bois benches have tiled backs and Texas sayings on the seats, and the lamps are solar powered.

Insider tip: weekend markets set up on the esplanade, but each is independently hosted, so dates and hours vary by organizer.

10. Guadalupe Plaza Park

Second Ward, 2311 Runnels St · city park on Buffalo Bayou · free

Guadalupe Plaza Park is a City of Houston park a few blocks from Navigation Boulevard, with green space, trails and a boat dock on Buffalo Bayou. Buffalo Bayou Partnership notes its Azios family fountain and historic columns, which recall the colonial architecture of Mexico City's Zócalo, and signs about East End history.

Good to know: sections of the bayou trail east of downtown close for improvements while Buffalo Bayou Partnership builds its Kinder Trail, so check its trails page before planning a longer walk. For the bayou west of downtown, see our Buffalo Bayou Park guide.

11. Buffalo Bend Nature Park and Hidalgo Park

Magnolia Park, 2300 S Sgt Macario Garcia Dr and 7000 Avenue Q · free

Yolanda Black Navarro Buffalo Bend Nature Park is a 10-acre former industrial site in Magnolia Park with three wetland ponds, an overlook, native plantings and footpaths, open daily from dawn to dusk. Hidalgo Park, built in 1932, lies just to the east. It has a statue of Father Miguel Hidalgo that Buffalo Bayou Partnership says was a gift from the government of Jalisco, Mexico.
