- Best Coffee Shops on Washington Avenue: 9 Indie Cafes and a Route
The best coffee shops on Washington Avenue in Houston are independents, and they run from Catalina Coffee, pouring at 2201 Washington Ave since 2007, to the cafe inside The Riot comedy club, 787 Coffee's farm-to-cup shop and The Coffee House at West End in a 1930 church building on Shepherd Drive. Our nine picks cover early openers, laptop rooms and two Sawyer Yards cafes. Every one was confirmed open on its own website or official Instagram in November 2026.
Here's the line we think sums up the avenue: on Washington Avenue you can drink coffee in a 1930 Sunday school building, a comedy club and an artists' studio building, all before lunch.

- For beans grown by the shop itself: 787 Coffee, 1811 Washington Ave.
- For the earliest start: Blue Tile Coffee, 3663 Washington Ave, typically open at 6 a.m. Monday through Saturday.

Where is Washington Avenue?
Washington Avenue is a roughly 4.5-mile street that starts at I-45 near downtown Houston and runs west to Hempstead Road. For this guide, we define the Washington Avenue corridor as the stretch from I-45 and Houston Avenue on the east to Westcott Street near Memorial Park on the west, between I-10 to the north and Memorial Drive and Buffalo Bayou to the south. That takes in the Old Sixth Ward, the First Ward and Sawyer Yards, Rice Military and the blocks around Shepherd Drive.
The road has a long past. Before the Katy Freeway opened, U.S. Highway 90 ran along Washington Avenue, which is why the street still feels like a highway that turned into a neighborhood.
Great coffee just outside these lines, on 19th Street or at MKT, belongs to our Heights coffee guide. For the towers east of I-45, see our downtown coffee guide.
How we chose
We looked for independent coffee shops with a clear reason to pick them: the coffee itself, a room you can work in, long hours, or a building worth seeing. Chains didn't make the cut. Each pick had to be confirmed open on its own website or official Instagram in November 2026, with an address inside our boundary.
We left out shops we couldn't confirm, including a few names that still show up in old directories but no longer have a working official site. Hours below come from each shop's own pages. They change often, so treat them as typical and check before you go.
Old Sixth Ward and the east end of the avenue
Catalina Coffee
Old Sixth Ward, 2201 Washington Ave · typically 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekends
Catalina Coffee is the Washington Avenue coffee shop other Houston coffee people point to first. It says it has been serving Houston since 2007, the longest run of any shop on this list. Come for espresso and pour-overs made with care, plus a pastry from the case.
Good to know: Catalina is a coffee-first room. Come for the cup and the conversation, and save the long laptop session for Sawyer Yards.
Best for: a proper cup and a real conversation.
The Riot cafe
Old Sixth Ward, 1925 Washington Ave · check The Riot's official site or Instagram for cafe hours
The Riot is a Houston stand-up comedy club, established in 2020, whose home at 1925 Washington Ave in the Old Sixth Ward pairs a daytime coffee shop and cafe with a full evening bar and a 150-seat showroom. Few coffee shops anywhere share a wall with a comedy stage.
Insider tip: on weekends The Riot runs Yolks & Jokes, its weekly comedy brunch show, on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Grab a coffee and stay for the set.
Best for: a morning coffee that can roll straight into a show.
787 Coffee
Old Sixth Ward, 1811 Washington Ave · typically 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday
787 Coffee is a farm-to-cup coffee company that grows, processes and roasts its own beans on its farm in Maricao, Puerto Rico. Its Washington Avenue shop is one of two in Houston, with the other on Fairview Street in Montrose.
What to order: the Coquito Latte, which 787 Coffee describes as a traditional Puerto Rican drink turned into a double-shot latte. It's dairy free.
Best for: single-origin fans who like knowing exactly where their coffee grew.
Paper Co. Coffee Bar
First Ward, 1100 Elder St · typically 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily
Paper Co. Coffee Bar is a neighborhood cafe run by Ecclesia Houston, a church. It began as the Taft Street Cafe in Montrose, moved to Elder Street in 2013 and became Paper Co. Cafe. During 2020 the space closed to the public and served as a food kitchen for unhoused neighbors. Today it's open daily, and its motto is a cafe for all.
Best for: a calm weekday coffee a few blocks north of the avenue's busiest stretch.
Sawyer Yards coffee shops
Slowpokes Sawyer Yards
First Ward, Silver Street Studios, 1501 Silver St, Bldg B · typically 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday
Slowpokes is a Houston coffeehouse brand with several locations, and its Sawyer Yards cafe sits inside Silver Street Studios, one of the artist-studio buildings in the Washington Avenue Arts District. A cafe in a converted industrial building full of working artists is about as Washington Avenue as coffee gets.
Insider tip: Slowpokes runs a weekday happy hour from 4 p.m. to close, Monday through Friday, so a late-afternoon studio crawl can end with a drink instead of a third coffee.
Best for: coffee before a studio crawl, or a beer after one.
Toros HTX
First Ward, Summer Street Studios, 2202 Summer St · typically opens 7 a.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. weekends, open until midnight
Toros HTX calls itself a soccer culture facility, and its tagline sums it up as coffee plus beer plus futbol. By day it serves a full coffee menu with pastries and breakfast sandwiches, and Sawyer Yards bills it as a great spot to get work done. In the evening the rooftop terrace becomes a beer garden, with TVs throughout for matches.
Best for: working through a morning match, then staying for the evening one.
Rice Military, Shepherd Drive and the west end
The Coffee House at West End
Near Rice Military, 802 Shepherd Dr · typically 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday
The Coffee House at West End has the best backstory on Washington Avenue. West End Baptist Church built the three-story building in 1930 and held Sunday school there for about 40 years. It later served as a food pantry, then sat largely empty with boarded windows for around 20 years while demolition was discussed. West End Church restored it, turned part of the old second floor into a mezzanine, and opened the coffeehouse in October 2021.
Insider tip: the rooftop deck, with views of the Houston skyline, is used for special events, so ask about it if you're planning a party. Note that the cafe is closed on Sundays.
Best for: a slow coffee in a room with history.
Blue Tile Coffee
Washington Avenue at Yale, 3663 Washington Ave, Suite 150 · typically 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday
Blue Tile Coffee is the early bird of Washington Avenue, typically opening at 6 a.m. six days a week. It runs a rewards program, Club Blue, and takes online orders, which makes it the easy pick for a coffee on the way to the office.
Best for: commuters and early workouts at Memorial Park.
La Vita Coffee
Washington Avenue at Yale, 3730 Washington Ave · typically 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday
La Vita Coffee calls itself an authentic Italian coffee shop, and it's a small, family-owned business. It serves Italian coffee, tea, smoothies and juices, Italian pastries and paninis, plus New York-style bagels baked fresh daily. Gluten-free and vegan pastries are available. It shares its space with Burger Vibe, a burger counter, so you can turn a coffee into dinner.
Insider tip: park on the side of the building near the blue container. You can reach the lot from Washington Avenue, Yale Street or Center Street.
Best for: a late coffee on a weekend night. It's one of the few spots on the corridor pouring espresso at 11 p.m. For more, see our late-night coffee guide.
