Best Breakfast in the Texas Medical Center: 9 Early Spots

Illustrated breakfast tray of eggs, coffee and a kolache before Texas Medical Center towers

The best sit-down breakfast in the Texas Medical Center is Terrace 54 Bar + Table, the rooftop restaurant at The Westin Houston Medical Center on Dryden Road, which typically serves breakfast every day from 6:30 to 11 a.m. For a fast weekday breakfast near your appointment, the hospital cafés are the answer: Café Hermann at Memorial Hermann, Waterfall Café at MD Anderson and Beansprout at Texas Children's all serve breakfast on weekday mornings. On weekends, your best bets are Terrace 54 and Main & Green at the Houston Marriott Medical Center, plus grab-and-go breakfast at Abercrombie Alcove in Texas Children's Hospital.

Here's what nobody tells you before your first early appointment: breakfast in the Texas Medical Center runs on shift-change time, and it ends early. Most kitchens are serving by 6 or 6:30 a.m., but the hospital breakfast lines typically stop at 10 or 10:30 a.m. Miss that window and you're eating a sandwich. We call it the 10 a.m. cliff, and this guide is built around it.

The quick list

  • Best sit-down breakfast, any day: Terrace 54 Bar + Table at The Westin Houston Medical Center, typically daily from 6:30 a.m.
  • Best weekend breakfast with a buffet: Main & Green at the Houston Marriott Medical Center, typically Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m.
  • Earliest breakfast you can carry: Einstein Bros. Bagels at Houston Methodist Hospital, typically from 6 a.m. on weekdays.
  • Best hot breakfast before a Memorial Hermann appointment: Café Hermann, Robertson Pavilion.
  • Best hot breakfast before an MD Anderson appointment: Waterfall Café in the Mays Clinic.
  • Best breakfast near the toy trains: Abercrombie Alcove at Texas Children's Hospital.
  • Nearest kolaches: Kolache Factory at Main and Kirby, just past the southern edge of the campus.

How do we define the Texas Medical Center?

For this guide, the Texas Medical Center means the campus itself: Hermann Park on the north, Main Street and Rice University on the west (Main Street addresses count), Almeda Road on the east and Old Spanish Trail on the south. It's the same line our Texas Medical Center coffee guide uses.

That rules out the breakfast spots in Rice Village and the Museum District, even the ones that call themselves Medical Center locations. We mention one just-over-the-line kolache shop below, but we don't count it as a pick. For the neighborhood around the campus, start with our Medical Center area page.

How we chose

We started with every food outlet on the official dining pages of the hospitals inside that boundary, plus the hotels and restaurants on the Texas Medical Center's own dining list. We kept places that serve real breakfast food (eggs, egg sandwiches, griddle plates, pastries or a breakfast line), not just coffee. Every pick had to show current hours on its own official website or its hospital's official dining page in November 2026.

We were honest with ourselves about the angle. Inside the campus, there is no classic greasy-spoon diner and no breakfast taqueria we could verify, so the sit-down role is played by two hotel restaurants and the taco role by a breakfast burrito and a breakfast quesadilla. If tacos are non-negotiable, see the section near the end.

Hours change, and hospital cafés are often weekday-only. Treat every time below as typical and check the official page before you go.

Where can you get a sit-down breakfast in the Texas Medical Center?

For a sit-down breakfast in the Texas Medical Center, go to one of two hotel restaurants; both are open on weekends.

Terrace 54 Bar + Table

The Westin Houston Medical Center/Museum District, 1709 Dryden Rd · breakfast typically daily 6:30–11 a.m. · $$

Terrace 54 Bar + Table bills itself as rooftop dining in the Texas Medical Center, and it is the most relaxed breakfast on campus. The breakfast menu covers the griddle (pancakes, Belgian waffles, brioche French toast), the classics (a traditional two-egg breakfast, eggs Benedict, steak and eggs, a build-your-own omelet) and an Eat Well box with steel-cut oats, avocado toast and an açaí bowl. On the menu we checked, most plates ran about $15 to $22.

What to order: the Breakfast Burrito, with scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, salsa, cheese and your choice of bacon or chicken sausage. It's the closest thing to a breakfast taco inside the campus. Or go for the Chicken & Waffle.

Insider tip: if you don't have time to sit, the same hotel's Sip Cafe, on the fifth-level pavilion, serves barista coffee and grab-and-go meals from 6 a.m. daily, and Marriott says breakfast is available there for a fee.

Best for: a family breakfast before or after a procedure, and the one breakfast on this list that feels like a treat. For more places to stay nearby, see our hotels near the Texas Medical Center guide.

Main & Green

Houston Marriott Medical Center/Museum District, 6580 Fannin St · typically Mon–Fri 6:30 a.m.–2 p.m., Sat–Sun 7–11 a.m. · $$

Main & Green at the Houston Marriott Medical Center calls itself the go-to spot for breakfast, with a daily breakfast buffet and a full menu. The menu runs from a build-your-own omelet and buttermilk pancakes to eggs Benedict, a breakfast panini and grits.

What to order: the Breakfast Quesadilla, with scrambled eggs, hash browns, cheddar and mozzarella and pico de gallo in a large flour tortilla, served with roasted salsa. I didn't know that: the menu marks guest favorites with a little heart, and the Banana & Glazed Pecans French Toast, made with brioche Texas toast, is one of them.

Best for: a weekend breakfast, and a group that wants the buffet. The hotel's driveway entrance is on Dryden Road.

Where to eat breakfast inside the hospitals

The hospital cafés are the fastest breakfasts in the Texas Medical Center, and the best one is usually in the building where your appointment is. Most are weekday-only and stop serving breakfast by mid-morning.

Einstein Bros. Bagels (Houston Methodist Hospital)

Walter Tower, Floor 1, 6565 Fannin St · typically Mon–Fri 6 a.m.–1 p.m. · $

Einstein Bros. Bagels at Houston Methodist Hospital typically opens at 6 a.m. on weekdays and serves its egg sandwiches until it closes at 1 p.m. Einstein's own store page lists weekend hours too, but Houston Methodist's dining page lists weekdays only, so call ahead before counting on it on a Saturday or Sunday.

What to order: the Texas Brisket Egg Sandwich, the Farmhouse Egg Sandwich or the Everything Egg Sandwich.

Best for: an egg sandwich in hand before a 7 a.m. appointment at Houston Methodist.

Café Hermann (Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center)

Robertson Pavilion, Floor 1 · breakfast typically Mon–Fri 6–10 a.m. · $

Café Hermann is Memorial Hermann's full-service cafeteria, with a grill, and its breakfast service typically runs from 6 to 10 a.m. on weekdays. I didn't know that: Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center was founded in 1925 and, by its own account, was the first hospital to open in the Texas Medical Center, so you're eating breakfast at the campus's oldest address.

Best for: a hot plate before a morning appointment at Memorial Hermann.

Bistro Sixty411 (Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center)

Cullen Pavilion, Floor 2, near the escalators · typically Mon–Fri 6 a.m.–2 p.m. · $

Bistro Sixty411, which shares its number with the hospital's 6411 Fannin Street address, serves pastries and gourmet coffee from 6 a.m. on weekdays, with sandwiches and salads later.

Best for: a pastry and a proper coffee when Café Hermann's line is long.

Waterfall Café (MD Anderson Cancer Center)

Mays Clinic, Floor 2, near The Tree Sculpture · breakfast typically Mon–Fri 6:30–10:30 a.m. · $

Waterfall Café in MD Anderson's Mays Clinic serves breakfast from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m. on weekdays, with grill items and Starbucks coffee. MD Anderson says this location accepts Badge Bucks and credit cards only, so don't count on paying cash.

Best for: breakfast between morning appointments at the Mays Clinic.

Cool Beans Coffee Bar (MD Anderson Cancer Center)

Duncan Building, Floor 2 · typically Mon–Fri 7 a.m.–6 p.m. · $

Cool Beans Coffee Bar in MD Anderson's Duncan Building is a coffee bar that also serves hot breakfast and pastries, and it keeps later weekday hours than most campus counters.

Best for: a late breakfast after the 10:30 cliff has passed elsewhere.

Beansprout Coffee Bean Cafe (Texas Children's Hospital)

Feigin Tower, Floor 1 · typically Mon–Fri 7 a.m.–2 p.m. · $

With the best name on campus, Beansprout Coffee Bean Cafe in Texas Children's Feigin Tower is open for breakfast, lunch and coffee on weekdays.

Best for: a weekday breakfast during a clinic visit at Texas Children's.

Abercrombie Alcove (Texas Children's Hospital)

Abercrombie Building, Floor 1, next to the toy train display · breakfast items typically daily 6–10 a.m. · $

Abercrombie Alcove sits next to the toy train display in Texas Children's Abercrombie building, and it sells grab-and-go breakfast items every day of the week from 6 to 10 a.m. It's a small thing, but on a hard morning with a young patient, breakfast next to a moving train helps.

Best for: parents with kids, any day of the week. Texas Children's also says visitors can order food delivery and meet the driver at the first-floor desk or valet area.

Where are the nearest kolaches and breakfast tacos?

The nearest kolaches are at Kolache Factory, 7811 Main Street, Suite 300, at Main and Kirby, just south of our boundary, so we don't count it as a pick. It typically opens at 6 a.m. Monday to Saturday and 7 a.m. on Sunday, closing at 2 p.m. Order the Ranchero, with scrambled eggs, ground ham, picante sauce, cheese and jalapeños in soft dough, or a Bacon, Egg & Cheese. Kolache Factory is a Houston original: John and Jerri Banks opened the first store in Houston in 1982, according to the company. More shops in our kolaches and donuts guide.

For a true breakfast taco, head west to Rice Village, a short drive away. Our Rice Village breakfast guide has the picks, and our best breakfast tacos in Houston guide has the citywide list.
